What are your nominees for this category?

Just finished watching 'The Wind that Shakes the Barley'.

Good film, but it was somewhat depressing, especially the end, which you could sort of see coming as it's a Ken Loach film.

The book Sophie's Choice is far more devastating than the film. I loved it but it depressed me & now that I have dc, I wouldn't dare re-read it. William Styron is a chronic depressive & it certainly shows in his writing.

BandofMothers · 15/04/2007 11:19

Ooh Sauce. Better watch the film first or it will disappoint after the book.

Blandmum · 15/04/2007 11:26

schindlers list

I don't think I could watch it now that I have kids

lots of the ones already posted.

And 'magnolias' I think with Tom Cruise. I had to keep going out the room for brief spells of sanity. It was so depressing.
Quite good though, but not sure I could watch it again.

I thought it ended with a rain of frogs (my absoulute worse nightmare)? Couldn't tell you whether that was good or bad thing.

I thought donnie darko ended not too depressingly. I mean it wasn;t all songs and roses, but not rain of frogs either.

(I'm not picking on you, honest )

RAIN OF FROGS!!!!!!

No redemption can ever get over that.

TheSingingLady · 15/04/2007 12:02

A real oldie, but 'Room at the Top' made me cry and cry.

Also 'Welcome to the Dolls House' - I had been told that it was a comedy, which it sort of is - but so dark - it really upset me. However, it is also brilliant!

TheArmadillo · 15/04/2007 12:06

Requiem for a Dream.
That didn't end well.

Anyone seen a beautiful film set in Ireland called Into The West (about 2 little lads who run off on a whie horse?)

I actually can't remember whether it's a depressing film at the very end or not, all I can remember is sobbing and sobbing at it...

oh god, watched something called Children Of Men the other week, about the results of mass infertility set in 2021 or something. What follows is depressing, disturbing, depressing and depressing. And at the very end, you're not sure if there's a glimmer of light - or whether it's depressing...

filthymindedvixen · 15/04/2007 12:25

kerrymum - at last, someone's who's heard of it. Yes, bitter sweet is better. ''Let's go roiding way out west..''

Wish I could find it on dvd.

that's kind of you to look, but it's not compatible with my bog standard dvd player... i used to have it taped from the telly...they regularly used to show it on Ch4 but it's not been on for years.

Mind you, just as well, because if it made me cry Before Children, imagine what a stae I'd be now I have 2 rapscallion boys of my own..

hatwoman · 15/04/2007 15:08

Crash - not the one about people with certain fetishes - the recent one and race in America - an absolutely brilliant film
