What are your nominees for this category?

Just finished watching 'The Wind that Shakes the Barley'.

Good film, but it was somewhat depressing, especially the end, which you could sort of see coming as it's a Ken Loach film.

The Fencing Master
Cyrano de Bergerac
The English Patient

expatinscotland · 15/04/2007 00:01

The Passion
Sophie's Choice

Hotel Rwanda
although depressiing/sad is an enormous understatement
Death of a Salesman - the ulimate in depressing about the human condition

NorksBride · 15/04/2007 00:04

Sorry, meant to say, those are all sad, not depressing.

I have to be mentally prepared to watch these films - I also have to gear-up for Branaghs' Henry V. I can't just watch them at a moment's notice. Anyone else do that?

expatinscotland · 15/04/2007 00:05

I should have geared up for this one.

I should have known better, having seen many of Ken Loach's films.

But man, that was friggin' SAD.

Oh god, Sophies Choice. I couldn't watch it again. My ex felt the same about the Deer Hunter but it didn't do much for me.

expatinscotland · 15/04/2007 00:05

I could not watch Sophie's Choice now, after having had children.

No way.

The Magdalene Sisters
never again
Don't Look Now

NorksBride · 15/04/2007 00:07

'That' scene in Sophies Choice haunts me sometimes. Or do I mean taunts me? It's like daring yourself to do it. But you can't. It's just not possible.

harpsichordcarrier · 15/04/2007 00:07

egad, not Sophie's Choice!
I can't even think about SC

expatinscotland · 15/04/2007 00:08

Oh, harpsi, The Magdalene Sisters came on TV and I started watching it.

Then of course saw it through.

That was sooooo depressing, although it was good.

God... sophie's choice is a no-no for all parents I would think. Horrible

harpsichordcarrier · 15/04/2007 00:09

oh god, I saw it about 6 weeks after dd1 was born
BAD IDEA.
Dogville, gosh that was depressing.

expatinscotland · 15/04/2007 00:12

I saw one way back in the 80s, with Trevor Nunn's wife, Imogen Stubbs, called 'A Summer Story'.

My sister and I cried so hard people were asking us if we were allright.

Great film, but fucking SAD.

OP posts:
NorksBride · 15/04/2007 00:13

I nearly watched Dogville last night but had just sat through Independence Day - a completely absurd film - and as a result I was so brain dead that I had to MN instead.

expatinscotland · 15/04/2007 00:15

I paid money to see Dogville in cinema.

I could have just looked in my bank account and cried just as much for free .

The Life of Dave Gale... me and DH were weeping when we hired this on DVD. Wonderful story, but scarily possible.

NorksBride · 15/04/2007 10:27

I have a late nomination... Harrison Bergeron.

Having had to check the name of film before posting, I was suprised to see that the lead actor was Sean Astin (pre LOTRs). It's quite thought-provoking in a 'are the politicians and media treating us like mushrooms' sense.

Haven't heard of The Life of Dave Gale...?

chirpygirl · 15/04/2007 10:33

The first thign I thought of when I saw this was TAPS. I still watch it now when I feel a bit depressed.

BandofMothers · 15/04/2007 10:36

I really want to see Sophie's Choice after seeing a clip of the actual bit where she has to choose. Just thinking about it is making the hairs on my neck stand up.

BandofMothers · 15/04/2007 10:37

Beaches is sad I think, but great tho, and not depressing.

Schindlers List obv.

Greenleeves · 15/04/2007 10:46

Cathy Come Home
Annie's Coming Out
Children of a Lesser God
Raun
Love Story
Kramer vs Kramer

Greenleeves · 15/04/2007 10:48

I think the Raun film had a different name - The Miracle of Love, maybe? It was about Raun Kaufman and the Son-Rise method anyway. Very harrowing film

southeastastra · 15/04/2007 10:52

Terms of Endearment comes to mind first and Carousel tons more
