am on the hunt for 'lovely films' after watching Steve Martin's Shopgirl at the weekend

they must be
a) lovely to look at
b) intelligent
c) not miserable

am trying to cheer self up with nice films after too much CSI so any suggestions much appreciated

but anyone who mentions The English Patient will have their Maltesers confiscated as it is a huge pile of wank

I guess by 'intelligent' I just meant 'not starring Reece Witherspoon'

And not strictly a film, but the recent Casanova, with David Tennant looked stunning, and was very witty.

aderyn · 23/01/2007 11:19

I second The Station Agent too

MrsJohnCusack · 23/01/2007 11:19

North by Northwest - love that film
and Bringing Up Baby

ooh I do love a lovely film, especially on a cold winter day

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 23/01/2007 11:19

Oh God, a classist film thread... Reece Withspoon... how dreadful! And I was going to suggest Just Like Heaven as well...

You're going to miss out with a spec like that...

Molesworth · 23/01/2007 11:19

The African Queen - all-time loveliest film

aDad · 23/01/2007 11:20

jean de florette and manon are beautifully shot and acted, but could qualify as a little moody and miserable IMO. If you are prone to crying they will set you off.

tokentotty · 23/01/2007 11:20

Singing in the Rain

tokentotty · 23/01/2007 11:20

Sorry - and agree totally with adad, Jean de Florettes and Manon des Sources

JackieNo · 23/01/2007 11:21

Agree - Tokentotty - fab film.

Molesworth · 23/01/2007 11:22

oh yes singing in the rain

on the town just as good!

franca70 · 23/01/2007 11:39

what about "beautiful girls"?
Ninotchka?
and that other movie with steve martin and sjp can't remember the title.....
the big chill

Molesworth · 23/01/2007 11:41

L'Homme du Train

Marina · 23/01/2007 11:42

LA Story, franca - that is such a cheerful film
I love Steve Martin generally so would also suggest The Man with Two Brains and All of Me, plus The Jerk. They are intelligent after a fashion
Oh, also, if you like folk music or dogs, Christopher Guest's silly ensemble comedies A Mighty Wind and Best in Show. Fabulous scripts and acting

Enid · 23/01/2007 11:42

Before Sunrise

aDad · 23/01/2007 11:44

i'd go with l'homme du train. Nice and lighthearted.

foxinsocks · 23/01/2007 11:45

Thought 'Ray' (life of Ray Charles) was a fabulous film too.

franca70 · 23/01/2007 11:46

LA story, thanks marina. the man with two brains is another favourite here. Actually I like steve martin so much that I even liked the remake of the father of the bride

Molesworth · 23/01/2007 11:47

speaking of steve martin Parenthood is a lovely film

franca70 · 23/01/2007 11:51

sophiewd · 23/01/2007 11:56
