am on the hunt for 'lovely films' after watching Steve Martin's Shopgirl at the weekend

they must be
a) lovely to look at
b) intelligent
c) not miserable

am trying to cheer self up with nice films after too much CSI so any suggestions much appreciated

but anyone who mentions The English Patient will have their Maltesers confiscated as it is a huge pile of wank

Just tried to find Enchanted April on Amazon and its says its only available on video!

My neighbour totorro is fab. DD watches it every day. Have just added "The Cat Returns" another of his to the top of my list for a bit of variety!

slayerette · 24/01/2007 13:29

Any of the Jane Austen ones - Ang Lee's Sense and Sensibility, Gwyneth Paltrow in Emma or Keira Knightley in P & P - or The Importance of Being Earnest - does have Reece Witherspoon but Rupert Everett and Colin Firth are so so funny.

Molesworth · 24/01/2007 13:30

The old Importance of Being Earnest with Margaret Rutherford and Edith Evans can't be beaten!

fizzbuzz · 24/01/2007 13:59

Brief Encounter, and that one with Russell Crowe as code breaker. Was it "The Brilliant Mind?".

Aslo personally am desperate to see Pirates of Carribean 2. Johnny Depp as Jack (swoon..so dashing...)

sauce · 24/01/2007 21:17

Speaking of Rupert Everett. I'm reading his bio atm.

abouttoloseit · 24/01/2007 21:24

Poor Reese is getting a hard time!! If you can suspend the no sobbing rule, 'Life is Beautiful' is just fantastic.

mamijacacalys · 24/01/2007 21:37

Fizzbuzz - you mean A Beautiful Mind. Agree - top film.

Also suggest The Bridges of Maddison County = top film with Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep but may fail the test as you may cry at the end.

Also second all votes for Doris Day films.

abouttoloseit · 24/01/2007 21:40

No,'Life is Beautiful' or 'Vita è bella' It's in Italian with subtitles. set in WW2 concentration camp but very uplifting.

granarybeck · 24/01/2007 21:45

Cinema Paradiso for loveliness.

What about Bob really makes me laugh.
