DD has suddenly got into this and its been years since I've seen it. Great characters, great music, beautiful animation and fantastic storyline (I know its based on Hamlet). There's lots of good Disney films but Lion King has everything - what Disney films are better than this?

And Nathan Lane as Timon is hilarious. Smile

Oh, and Monsters Inc.

EuphemiaCoxton · 18/05/2015 15:36

Yabu. The sword in the stone.

I would pay good money to see Shere khan and Mufasa have a fight though. I imagine SK would win though as he plays dirty.

I always hated the end of The Jungle Book when they tie fire to SK's tale. Used to make me very Sad. Although being torn apart by hyenas or thrown into a wildebeest stampede I'm totally okay with.

Now I actually have a problem with the Jungle Book, sad to relate. I read the Kipling books long before seeing the film and what they did to the plot/characters - ugh! If you don't know the original I agree it is a great film, the songs are brilliant etc. I mean, in the books the elephant was called Hathi the Silent, ffs. Not Mad Colonel Stomper Hathi. They swapped the characters of Baloo and Bagheera (possibly to suit the voice actors). Kaa was on Mowgli's side, even saved him from the monkeys (which, apart from the addition of a king which the book made a point of them not having, were pretty much spot on, to be fair - oh, and apart from being a whole collection of different species, many of them not Indian, but Must Remember Is Cartoon).

That said, King Louis, who should not by rights have been in the story at all for more reasons than one, was ace and I Wanna Be Like You is the rockin'est. Shere Khan was also perfect. (In a later story he came back and Mowgli did him in Lion King fashion, with buffaloes.)

The Aristocats
Robin Hood
Sword in the Stone

Never seen the Lion King

happy2bhomely · 18/05/2015 20:04

I do like Robin Hood and Sword In The Stone. I love the Oo de lally song.

Baby of Mine in Dumbo is almost too much to bear.

I hate Pinocchio.

camacae · 18/05/2015 20:32

Never seen it, but the music annoys me...:)

DandyDan · 18/05/2015 20:49

Probably Beauty & the Beast
With The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Pocahontas close seconds. {Agree that Hunchback is the most under-rated Disney by a country mile...}

Andrewofgg · 18/05/2015 20:53

Fantasia will never, ever, be equalled, especially the first (Bach) sequence.

pissovski · 18/05/2015 20:56

I do love the songs from LK, but Aladdin is my absolute favourite Disney film (I adore Robin Williams' Genie), closely followed by Hercules. Also up there for me are Beauty and the Beast, Basil the Great Mouse Detective (saw it in the cinema) and Sword in the Stone. I do like the Pixars too

littlehouseinthebigwoods · 18/05/2015 20:57

Yanbu, I could have written your op. Saw it in the cinema when it first came out years ago. Then bought dvd for my dd recently and was overwhelmed by the beauty and....epicness of it! Would love to see the stage show.

Hulababy · 18/05/2015 21:27

I hadn't really seen the whole film til recently. I had seen parts of it, and seen the Disney park shows (DLP and Florida) but yes, good film.

Good job too.

Our end of Y2 (infant school, so end of school) show is based on the musical. Currently fine tuning the script and had auditions to allocate parts.

Maybe by July i will hate it!

WoonerismSpit · 18/05/2015 21:54

I'm so pleased that other people have said Robin Hood! Best one IMO.

The 'baby of mine' scene in Dumbo makes me cry. I used to hum it to DD when she was newborn to get her to sleep, and cry whilst I was doing so Blush

The bit in Pinocchio were the boys are turning into donkeys and crying for their mums has me in floods too!

Has anyone seen this, by the way? It's a YouTube video on the Huffington Post showing the recycled animation in Disney films. I was Shock!

Hi all,
The OP has kindly given us permission to sweep this over to Films, so we will be doing that shortly.
Thanks.

King louis is an orangutan unless he swung all the way from borneo Hmm

MuddhaOfSuburbia · 19/05/2015 09:22

I think doing baddies in in a stampede is a bit Hmm

the Briddish accents in RAHbin Hood (NarddingHAM) also: Hmm

also Hmm is OH tenuous grasp of early English history. Every time Magna Carta King John turns up, he asks 'is that the one who sucks his thumb?'

SqueezyCheeseWeasel · 19/05/2015 09:23

Jungle Book for me.

I can't stand the rest of the Disney films. Unless you are counting the Pixar ones.

Mrsjayy · 19/05/2015 09:24

I hate pinocchio it scared me even now the thought of it

MuddhaOfSuburbia · 19/05/2015 09:27

are ALL the animals in Jungle Book wrong?

wolves, what about wolves?

I saw JB as a kid- it was the first thing I saw at the pictures it blew my MIND

I never tired of watching it with the kids, either. It's the movement- specially Mowgli. He moves like a kid

Mrsjayy · 19/05/2015 09:40

Yeah you get indian wolves

ElleyBear13 · 19/05/2015 09:59

I prefer Bambi over lion king, im just a huge fan of the art and music. I hate bambi 2 though awful awful film. But i love lion king broadway, we went to see it after losing my first baby and the 'he lives in you' scene made me howl. Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Cinderella. Lady and the Tramp (love peggy!)101 Dalmatians all follow closely behind as does Tangled.

holmessweetholmes · 19/05/2015 10:04

I like Aladdin best - great songs and very funny. Love the genie.

MuddhaOfSuburbia · 19/05/2015 10:09

Can we count Mary Poppins?

It's a bit animated

I love Mary Poppins. It's practically perfect in every way

OnlyLovers · 19/05/2015 10:40

Mary Poppins is a masterpiece.

DianeBlack · 20/05/2015 12:21

I agree with this!
