Where it finishes and you're more depressed than you were to start with.

Mine:
Stalingrado (Stalingrad) About Nazi's during (yup!) the battle of Stalingrad. In Russian. It is over 2 hours of depression.

All is lost.
Robert Redford at sea. Oh dear. For his face and the film.

The Grey.
Liam Neeson mumbles his way though misery.

Turtles Can Fly
Extremely sad and shocking

Bolshybookworm · 01/06/2015 21:43

Grave of the fireflies. The film starts with the main character (a young boy) dying of starvation Sad

Even before I had kids, I never made it to the end, it's relentlessly depressing.

SoleSource · 01/06/2015 21:52

Leaving Las Vegas.

phoenixrose314 · 01/06/2015 21:56

"The Last Kiss"

Only film I've ever thrown in the bin after buying and watching. Bloody depressing and horribly unsatisfying ending. Romantic comedy my arse.

SleeptightDaisy · 01/06/2015 22:37

Threads dh and I sat in silence after watching it and then we discussed what we would do if there ever was a nuclear attack both of us agreed to run towards it and die first rather than live like threads.
Muriel's Wedding not as depressing as most but not the romance as expected.

highviolet · 01/06/2015 22:53

I watched Foxcatcher a couple of months ago, not knowing the details of the true story. Bleak and got under my skin. I forced myself to watch it all and the ending horrified me. An uncomfortable watch.

Whathaveilost · 01/06/2015 23:00

Innocence. A French film from 2005. Seriously weird about an odd private school where the pupils arrived in coffins.

SoleSource · 01/06/2015 23:40

"Joe" 1970 Peter Boyle

The most miserable films you've ever seen?
zukiecat · 06/06/2015 02:06

Pierrepoint,

A very good film about the executioner Albert Pierrepoint, Timothy Spall is amazing in the role, but such a depressing film, not one for cheery viewing!

19lottie82 · 11/06/2015 19:15

Tyrannosaur (?) with Olivia Coleman and Peter Mullen...

getbusyliving · 13/06/2015 09:07

Antichrist - not one I'd recommend Confused

ApignamedJasper · 15/06/2015 16:11

There are probably more that I havent seen recently so cant remember but one I saw recently called Into the Wild was horribly depressing.

SPOILERS

He dies at the end.

DP watched it with me and was all smiles at the end 'Wasn't it great that he lived his dream?'

I just stared at him incredulous. What?! No!! He basically drops of the face of the earth by destroying all his ID and anything that makes him traceable and his poor family (parents and sister) then they have to go through over 2 years of hell and misery thinking he is dead and desperately trying to find out what happened to him while he is off having a jolly good time travelling round the country.

He just does what ever the hell he wants thinking the rules don't apply to him and then arrogantly goes off into the Alaskan wilderness thinking he can just shoot moose (illegally) and live off the land and because he failed to do any research or proper preparation, he ends up starving to death in an old bus 5 miles from a road where he could have been rescued.

The senseless waste of life just made me furious and incredably sad, and it was also based on a true story.

It just seemed so pointless, like I wasted 2 and a half hours of my life!

Hated Juno too. It got rave reviews but it just left a really bad taste in my mouth, and I found it really sad even though it seems to be billed as a 'feel good movie'. It didn't make me feel good!

There was one called Mystic River I watched years ago with Sean Penn and that was really miserable too although I don't remember the exact plot :/

BreakingDad77 · 18/06/2015 17:10

Definitely one flew over the cuckoos nest and what happens to jack nicholson's character.

MrsHenryCrawford · 20/06/2015 21:09

The hours -pure misery
Downfall is a great film, but very bleak
Mystic river is awful

Dowser · 25/06/2015 20:45

Cold Mountain...omg! It was just harrowing. I wanted to run for the hills....but I was with my mum and I think she was rather enjoying it :-0

Black Swan...wtf!

Les Miserables.....bit of a clue in the title . Hated! Hated ! Hated it! I will NEVER, EVER go and see the stage show.

Refuse to watch Schindlers list.

Dowser · 25/06/2015 21:17

Just watched The Water Diviner as I dowse.

Sadly not enough dowsing and too much dying...based around Gallipolli. At least it had a bit of a ( slight Uplift) happy ending!

I do like Russell Crowe though.

Another one I remember that was just awful was Boogie Nights ! I think I've blanked that one out.

Hotel el paradaiso with rik mayall....depressingly awful.

aoife24 · 27/06/2015 15:23

The Road was pretty bloody miserable.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 27/06/2015 15:29

The Magdalene sisters.
Irreversible

MistressMerryWeather · 27/06/2015 15:39

Yes to Melancholia.

I actually had to turn it off because it was making me feel sick.

CazY777 · 28/06/2015 20:27

Japanese story - Aussie woman has affair with Japanese man, they go off for a lovely trip in the out back and then he jumps head first into a billabong and kills himself. Most of the film is about how she gets his body back to civilization and how she tells his wife!

aoife24 · 01/07/2015 15:45

I just researched Melancholia on Netflix, thought it was wonderful.

MistressMerryWeather · 01/07/2015 16:57

Visually Melancholia was beautiful.

But the whole concept just messed with my noggin.

ASettlerOfCatan · 03/07/2015 00:03

I avoid depressing films but have been forced to watch some... schindlers list, in the name of the father. Also sleeping with the enemy and kramer vs kramer. All based on true stories as well which is even worse. The damn tins still haunt me and the red jacket...

Sweetsecret · 10/07/2015 13:53

NIL by mouth, left me shaken.
Passion of the Christ, had to leave the cinema I was traumatised!!!

VulcanWoman · 11/07/2015 18:59

A River runs through it.
There was nothing to it, dragged on.Confused
