Where it finishes and you're more depressed than you were to start with.

Mine:
Stalingrado (Stalingrad) About Nazi's during (yup!) the battle of Stalingrad. In Russian. It is over 2 hours of depression.

All is lost.
Robert Redford at sea. Oh dear. For his face and the film.

The Grey.
Liam Neeson mumbles his way though misery.

I agree about Leaving Las Vegas. A man basically drinks himself to death. Bleak.

Johnogroats · 15/01/2015 20:13

The Road. I nearly slit my wrists. Had to drink a lot of Wine

baxterstockman · 15/01/2015 20:15

I found 'Calvary' pretty depressing. Other than the Priest and his daughter, all the characters were vile. Definitely went to bed afterwards feeling a little deflated.

SteppingonLego · 15/01/2015 20:23

Jude the Obscure with Kate Winslet. Depressing story and apparently shot somewhere the sun never shines and everywhere is grey.

Lottapianos · 15/01/2015 20:29

Oh dear god I was wailing by the end of Requiem for a Dream, and I am no stranger to depressing films. I felt like I'd taken a day trip to hell

I loved Tyrannosaur but agree, it is very tough viewing

I rewatched Slumdog Millionaire recently and god yes, it is very depressing apart from the last 10 minutes. Nothing 'feel good' about torture and slavery and grinding poverty

dylsmimi · 15/01/2015 20:30

Never let me go with keira Knightley at the end dh and i were just ohhh so that was that then! Sad
8mm

sure there is another but its been pushed to the back of my head by feel good Disney!!

dylsmimi · 15/01/2015 20:32

Oh remembered - east is east. Same as someone mentioned earlier with slumdog millionaire - billed as fun feel good comedy and it was domestic violence etc more the miselling that made it depressing

Cupcakes123 · 15/01/2015 20:33

Never Let Me Go was just awful, I just sobbed through it. One Day was pretty bad when they FINALLY get together and then she gets run over
:(

Lunaballoon · 15/01/2015 20:38

French film Vagabond (Sans toit ni loi). Bleak and unbelievably depressing.

ToothpickCharlie · 15/01/2015 20:43

Have to agree with SteppingonLego - the film Jude was relentless misery. Hated the book too.

HellKitty · 15/01/2015 21:03

Archfa!!!!
That is exactly the same Stalingrad film I meant! It might have been German or Russian, the subtitles were English Grin

dylsmimi re. Never Let Me Go, I sobbed all through the last few chapters of the book and thankfully knew never to watch the film!

Like a poster upthread, I mostly avoid hard to watch/emotionally bruising films. I can't spare the recovery time. Even kids' films make me well up these days ffs.

Noseyvalentine · 15/01/2015 21:17

The persuit of happyness. How much bloody misery could they pack into one film? Left me utterly depressed.

Parsley1234 · 15/01/2015 21:17

Schindlers list oh my god complete cinema silence at the end. I cried so much and cdnt speak after it I don't think I cd ever watch Sophie's choice.

BOFster · 15/01/2015 21:18

God yes- more like The Pursuit Of Misery.

Amethystus · 15/01/2015 21:18

Instantly thought Requiem For A Dream too and see someone has beaten me

cogitosum · 15/01/2015 21:18

Murial's wedding devastates me. I can never stop thinking about the mum afterwards!

GilbertBlytheWouldGetIt · 15/01/2015 21:20

Yy The Road. Just awfully emotionally draining. No possibility of redemption.

Melancholia by Lars Von Trier, the name should have tipped me off.

Amethystus · 15/01/2015 21:22

to it, bloody tablet. Thought I could handle those sort of druggie movies after watching Trainspotting many years ago but it bets it hands down for grimness

CatCushion · 15/01/2015 21:32

I'll third The Road. Anyone want the DVD (if we haven't binned it already)?

AllMimsyWereTheBorogoves · 15/01/2015 21:34

La Vita E Bella (Life is Beautiful). It's a brilliant film but I was so, so upset after I saw it. I couldn't get it out of my head for days. (Father and gorgeous little son are taken together to a concentration camp and father does his best to keep the little lad from realising what is really happening by making it into a great adventure.) God, welling up here just thinking about it. I don't think I will ever be able to watch it again. Sad

miaowmix · 15/01/2015 21:37

Requiem for a dream - best advert to not take drugs, ever.
Warhorse, yes, schmaltz, bu I sobbed for 2 hours straight.
Kes. I'm not very good with Northern misery-grit.
For unknown reasons I read the book The Road. No way am I watching the film.
I think most Brit films are pretty depressing on the whole, except Richard Curtis and his ilk.

MollyMaDurga · 15/01/2015 21:38

Another Thomas Hardy adaptation: Tess of the D'Urbervilles.
Dire. But that was a crap movie. Jude the Obscure was good.. god I cried buckets.

tricot39 · 15/01/2015 21:38

breaking the waves

BOFster · 15/01/2015 21:41

Yup, another Lars Von Dreary one, tricot39. Bleak as fuck.
