Viviennemary · 31/12/2014 15:23

I saw a film a couple of years ago with Colin firth. The character he played was gay. Can't remember what it was called.

mickeyfartpants · 31/12/2014 15:24

Viviennemary, that's A Single Man, which fascicle suggested already. Great film I agree, but very sad.

mickeyfartpants · 31/12/2014 15:25

Ah yes, Ripley question has been answered. :)

haphazardbystarlight · 31/12/2014 15:25

Yeah I think Ripley is in the film - not the book so much.

Is johanna gay? I couldn't be bothered with the third HG!

partialderivative · 31/12/2014 15:27

Haven't read or heard of many of these.

Then you have lots of films to watch.

Did you do any research before you OP'ed?

Jackiebrambles · 31/12/2014 15:28

Just popping in to say Sarah Waters but was beaten to it!

The paying guests and finger smith both have gay characters.

MrSheen · 31/12/2014 15:28

Jeanette Winterson often uses a ambiguously gendered narrative voice but Gut Symmetries definitely has a same sex relationship and I'm pretty sure art and lies does too.

HeraldAngelSinging · 31/12/2014 15:29

That film with Dirk Bogarde. Was it The Servant?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/12/2014 15:29

Have been beaten to the ones I wanted to say - 'Maurice' and 'Brideshead' - both v good.

This by The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas writer but it's not v good, nor does it meet the 'well known' part of the OP!

mickeyfartpants · 31/12/2014 15:29

Given the wealth of leads you have been given here, I think YABU.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 31/12/2014 15:30

Every single american sitcom & youth drama of the past 10 years?

Pippidoeswhatshewants · 31/12/2014 15:30

John Irving, The Hotel New Hampshire
Ruby fruit Jungle, Rita Mar Brown
Alice Walker, The Colour Purple
Patricia Highsmith, The Talented Mr Ripley

...and so on. Even Albus Dumbledore in Harry Potter is supposed to be gay.

MrSheen · 31/12/2014 15:31

Are the killers in Alfred Hitchcock's 'Rope' gay? Or are they just from the '40's?

SunnyBaudelaire · 31/12/2014 15:31

The Importance of Being Earnest is the gayest play ever!

owlborn · 31/12/2014 15:33

Mamma Mia has one of the dads as gay.

MrSheen · 31/12/2014 15:34

Big Business - There are 2 men who work for Bette Midler who are a couple. One of them says that he bought his robe on Fire Island, with a meaningful stare.

Guiltypleasures001 · 31/12/2014 15:35

Torch song trilogy brilliant film, huge message
