Also East is East, Billy Elliot and Bridget Jones all have gay characters.

If you like musicals, Rent, Moulin Rouge, The Birdcage...

This is only in case you're interested, and because someone mentioned the play Edward II (isn't it Marlowe not Shakespeare?!), but there are medieval stories about characters who, if they're not 'gay' in the modern sense, certainly don't conform to heterosexual expectations. There's a medieval romance about two men who love each other more than they love any women, and another one about a woman whose parents raise her as a man, and another man falls in love with him/her. And I think Twelfth Night is ambiguous - technically everyone ends up with someone of the opposite sex, but it's not clear whether that's quite what they were hoping for.

JeanneDeMontbaston · 31/12/2014 15:41

Oh, and Sappho's poems. Smile

I'll shut up about the history now - I just like how far back it goes.

Oh, the recently aired The Fall, about the female detective. OK so it's a TB Show, but a fairly well known recent one, with a big-star cast (Gillian Anderson plus the bloke from Merlin).

Her being bisexual is an aside from the storyline, it's not the focus of the plotline/etc.

1981 · 31/12/2014 15:48

TB = TV Show!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/12/2014 15:49

The City and the Pillar by Gore Vidal. I was an innocent teenager when I read it, and it made a huge impression on me.

It was written in 1946 and was one of the few books of its period dealing directly with male homosexuality.

There are tonnes on Netflix - not sure how well known they are as I've never really been that into big hit films. That's why i like Netflix - it has so many random things.
