Can only think of Oranges.

I'm sure there must be others - any others??

OP posts:

Film - A beautiful thing (featuring both Kim and Shirley from Eastenders). Fab film about teenage boys accepting their sexuality

Purplevicki · 03/01/2015 13:28

Pride - a film about Welsh miners and socialism. Sounds crap. Very good film based on a true story.

Most (newer) high school dramas feature people either experimenting with sexuality or openly gay relationships. Pretty little liars has lots and lots of gay/bi characters. Mostly female which is unusual! Even back to films like Clueless and Mean Girls - although it is often a plot point or stereotype as part of "coming of age".

The full monty

OP
If your husband thinks all the male dancers are gay, he needs to read their biographies better

But please remember that homosexuality was illegal until 1967 in the UK
therefore books written before then will be more cautious in their wording

Ma Vie En Rose is a really lovely film. The character is very non-incidental as it's done from a trans-child's perspective. A bit off-piste from your request OP, but I had to put it in there! Don't think you'll find it on-demand but I found the DVD online very easily. I'd recommend it to anyone.

OP - maybe books by David Sedaris might fit the bill. He writes observational humorous non-fiction, mostly based around his family and his long-term partner Hugh who features quite heavily.

Also, maybe Alan Bennett's diaries, included in his two volumes of memoirs Writing Home and Untold Stories, in particular Untold Stories in which he wrote a piece about his growing realisation as a teenager that he was homosexual. It's all very gentle and positive and dealt with in his often self-deprecating humour. He also includes regular references to his relationship with his long-term partner.

I think part of the problem here is a lack of LGBT main characters as well. There's a lot of things being listed here where there's a gay side character, and it's not an issue. But very few where the main character is gay, but the storyline is about him fighting dragons or whatever.

I recently read the unabridged version of Anne Frank's diary, in which she talks about wanting to kiss a girl. But also no good for a 7 year old.

Lardylassnomore · 11/01/2015 15:37

New boy by William sutcliffe

bobthebuddha · 11/01/2015 18:20

MrsFionaCharming, have you seen Ma Vie En Rose? The character couldn't be more central, although (s)he doesn't fight dragons..just society's lack of tolerance. Not totally dissimilar to dragon fighting then, possibly!

Saved is a great film

In Tabby McTat (Julia Donaldson) the cat gets taken in by 2 women living together - obviously no details given on their relationship status, but it's a nice 'in the background' introduction to different households.

Haven't read back but my thoughts are:
'Victim'
'The Killing of Sister George'
'Long Time Companion'
'My Beautiful Launderette'
'Weekend'
'Maurice'

ohmymimi · 23/03/2015 20:30

Plus:
'Notes on a Scandal'
'The Kids are Alright'

Anything by Mary Renault. She wrote wonderful historical novels (and other things) set in Ancient Greece. I read them avidly in my early teens, lots of characters are gay but it isn't made a big deal of. It introduced me to the idea of gay men and I never had any problems with it. Ironically, Renault was gay herself but rarely wrote about gay women.

Now I feel like going off and re-reading. Any bookish teen would get a lot from them.
