Emetophobia - terrified of this sickness bug

1000 replies

nellyraggbagg · 03/01/2008 22:21

This sounds so stupid, but I'm completely terrified of the children (not to mention DH and me) catching this Norovirus that's doing the rounds. I've been emetophobic for as long as I can remember, and it has become even worse since having children. Every time they open their mouths, I'm terrified they're going to say they feel sick. When I go to bed at night, my last waking thought is: "Oh my God, what if they're sick in the night?" My DH is working away a lot at the moment, which makes matters even worse (he is good at dealing with sick, thank goodness!!) I have dealt with both children being sick (I have found that manic cleaning helps very slightly to take my mind off the blind panic), but am rigid with fear following newspaper reports of this current bug. How will I pick DS up from school if DD and/or I get it? My Mum is miles away, unfortunately. And what if DH gets it? I don't know how I'd cope if he were sick. Please, please help, someone - even if just by saying that I'm not the only person who feels like this!

Oh, eek... bad day indeed. How are things now??? I have every possible thing crossed for you that your DH has woken up feeling better. Let us know!
(McD's is obviously not a good place for emets. My DH also got food poisoning from McD's - long before I knew him, thankfully for me...)
Stay strong (easier said than done, I know...)

Thanks for your messages, nelly and bb. DH announced he was fine when he got up, went off to work and I just phoned him to find out when he would be home:

Am therefore very sorry to announce that he says "my guts are in turmoil, its all come back, I think I'll feel better if I could just be sick". He will be home by 8.30pm .

nellyraggbagg · 18/04/2008 21:06

indeed, eekamoose. I am so sorry to hear it. He'll have been at home now for half an hour, so I hope he has taken a turn for the better. If I could send anti-v vibes your way, I would be doing it now!!!

Quick update with weak smile in direction of nelly and wiggle:

DH got home toting two large bottles of lucozade in jacket pockets. Says he feels a bit better than when I spoke to him on phone earlier (he was lying down in the back of camerman's mahoosive car because his stomach hurt so much). He spent half an hour dealing with emails and has taken himself off to bed again with the dreaded bucket. In spare bedroom, I hasten to add, but the spare room is directly above where I'm sitting now, so every little noise from up there has me jumping a bit.

Thanks for your concern. It helps to know someone is "out there" listening.

nellyraggbagg · 18/04/2008 23:21

Yes, we are listening!!
Good luck and cyber hugs from up north...

schmoopoo · 18/04/2008 23:38

oh eek sorry to gatecrash how are you doing

eekamoose · 18/04/2008 23:43

Am OK thanks schmooo. DH just got out of bed and went into bathroom (door closed, thank God, not his usual style). When he came out I went to bottom of stairs and whispered up "you ok?" he said "yes I just had to pee" and laughed at me. In a nice way, not vindictive.

Sorry to hear about softplay incident. In all likelihood you will all be fine, but you know that don't you?

schmoopoo · 19/04/2008 00:02

I know but you know what we are like, Is DH asleep now.

eekamoose · 19/04/2008 00:09

Yes, I think he is. And am going to turn in myself now. Try not to worry schmoo.

schmoopoo · 19/04/2008 00:10

Sorry to hear your plight Eek, if it's any consolation DP has had this a fair few times since having our dcs and has only v'd once. Usually, he just gets stomach cramps and 'D'. Hopefully, he'll have woken up this morning feeling better xxx

annoyingdevil · 19/04/2008 10:36

Sorry to schmoo as well - but these softplay centres do tend to use a lot of disinfectent for any 'accidents'. A child threw up last time I was at one - arrrrrgh

nellyraggbagg · 19/04/2008 12:28

Eek - how are things? Still have everything crossed for you...
Schmoo - I feel for you. I am so afraid of soft play centres that we rarely go to them (thankfully DS won't go to parties, and particularly hates soft play centres - unlike DD...)
Hope everyone else is okay!

Thanks guys DS and DD are ok today winding each other up so must be OK !! EEEK how are you all

nellyraggbagg · 19/04/2008 14:33

Schmoo - winding one another up is very, very good!

eekamoose · 19/04/2008 19:16

Awww thanks for asking you guys!!!

DH still not feeling good. He's been at work today and is out working on another job tonight. Says the stomach ache is coming and going. He hasn't v'd but he hasn't had d either. He has barely eaten for 3 days which is VERY VERY unlike him - he is 6'4" and a cuddly 17 stone.

He is very stressed about work atm - taking on lots of jobs, the phone hasn't stopped ringing. I am beginning to wonder - stomach ulcer? or IBS? Will get him off to GP if it doesn't clear up soon.

nellyraggbagg · 19/04/2008 21:57

Eek - thank you for the update. I have been hoping for the best for you! It does seem strange that he's had such bad pain without any other symptoms. I had a bug last winter which kept me in bed for a day with terrible stomach pains (no d or v), but it didn't last that long. I hope he's feeling better tomorrow, and that you're managing to stay reasonably calm...
Hello to everyone else. We're going to a party tomorrow, so I am anxious in advance! xx

Hi to everyone, just popping on before i go to bed to check how everyone is.

Eek - how's DH? Really hoping everything ok at yours, been thinking about you all day! We've been out and about so haven't had chance to check on here, but my thoughts were with you hun!

schmoo - sorry to hear about your dilemma too, mare or what ? I would've been out of there like a shot!! How are you now hun?

Nelly - try and enjoy the party. xx

Hi to everyone else, hope everyone is well. xxx

annoyingdevil · 19/04/2008 23:11

Hi everyone, just checking in before bed too. Eek, fingers crossed your DH will be better tomorrow!

Anyway, something weird happened last night. DD(3) had a nightmare and was screaming for me at around 11pm. I went and sat with her and she was wittering on about big bad wolves & dogs etc. when suddenly she came out with "sick coming up into my mouth" OMFG, I nearly had a heart attack. She then said she didn't feel sick, but did say she was too full up to finish her milk. She was also quite hot, so maybe she was feeling sick. I just don't know. It terrified the life out of me anyway! (she wasn't sick btw)

wiggleit · 20/04/2008 19:52

Evening everyone! How are we all tonight?

Eek, how's things? Not heard from you so am hoping that no news is good news??? Let us know how your DH is.

Schmoo - how are you after your terrifying incident the other day?

Annoying - scary moment there for you but at least she was ok! Phew!!!! Kids have me on edge all the time.

Hi to Notalone (missing you mate) ,funny, bb (my own little therapist.. )..wanted to ask you bb, if someone has a bug and they cough or sneeze, can the bug be passed on that way? Just wondered, be great if you could enlighten me, ta babes! x, hi to everyone else coz i'm boound to have forgotten to mention someone! (sorry if it's you!) xx
