Blood sugar diet and fast800 thread 19

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/05/2020 22:25

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Time restricted eating/TRE :
In addition to the fast800/ BSD plan you can incorporate a strategy of time restricted eating. Put simply, this means only eating between certain times each day to maximise your fasting time. TRE has shown to have positive results for weightloss, even if there is no calorie restriction, and increases insulin sensitivity/reduces insulin resistance. At first, try for a clear 12 hours without food each 24 hours, increasing to 16:8 as you get more adept at fasting.

Back on track after a more relaxed weekend. (Didn’t go mad - just didn’t count and had a few extra bits here and there). Closed the kitchen at 770 today.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/06/2020 06:59

@Kimlek I know, 17 is low. Especially for me. I love water and do drink gallons of it, but I do like a fizzy drink and have sugar free tonic water or dry ginger but obviously they do have sweetener in.

OP posts:
bluepixie · 02/06/2020 07:03

Yes 17 is super low! I usually manage about 30-35 partly coz I can’t cope with milk in my coffee and usually have Greek yog for brekkie.
Another pound off overnight.

Kimlek - have u tried herbal teas instead I have a million flavours I keep trying. I know it’s been warm but here anyway rain starts tmrw so a tea might be appealing? I don’t think Mosley intends on it being super low carb so don’t worry 47 is still considered low! I think anything under 100 is tbh but I see scales move faster when I do lower then 30

My LO woke up up a lot last night which is unusual. So I’m gonna be tired which will make today challenging. Wish me luck!

Bestbees · 02/06/2020 07:15

Good luck @Cream123 it is always harder when you are tired. Make sure you drink lots of water. If I am tired I try to focus on eating lots of colourful veg and remind myself that good food will make me feel better!
First day today, wish me luck! Imagine it will be ok as I have been easting so much recently I have plenty of stores!!

Bestbees · 02/06/2020 07:17

Oops also meant to ask. I am focusing on principles of the diet and calorie not carbs, is that ok? Just don't want to get too stressy about it and think better to get settled in first. Is that ok?

bluepixie · 02/06/2020 07:55

Thanks bestbees and best of luck! My first week of this I literally couldn’t manage 800 so don’t worry if u get too hungry. Lots of water. Babybel almond butter are my go to snacks.
Don’t worry too much re carbs u will find when u calorie restrict u actually can’t have that many carbs and you will quickly find that eating carby food will make u hungrier while filling with good fats and protein Will keep u more full. Take this week to experiment what works for you :)

Kimlek · 02/06/2020 08:11

Yes, good luck bestbees exactly what cream123 says. Drink tons of water too! You can do this.
Ah sorry to hear your tired cream123 maybe you LO waking due to heat. It is blooming warm. But another 1lb down is great. Herbal teas are a great idea!!! I actually like them cold too. Funny how you forget about these things. Yes, I guess 47 carbs isn’t too bad and very low I think there could be a fibre issue.

Kimlek · 02/06/2020 08:18

Down a pound this am - 149 (10st 9 or 67.5kg)
Loving ‘fat secret’ bear btw.

RedLipsAndRosyCheeks · 02/06/2020 09:04

Ahem, let's not talk about the last week and what I've eaten/drunk!

Back on it today. Bovril for breakfast, salmon salad with lime dressing for lunch, Spanish aubergine stew with what ever green veg is lurking in the fridge.

I'm avoiding the scales until Monday though!

Bestbees · 02/06/2020 09:27

Aubergine stew sounds great, what's the recipe?
Do you count Cals in green veg like broccoli and salad? Seeing different info out there. Kind of thinking I won't this week, and then see where I am next week as I feel like it will help with hunger and they are good for you!
Scales this morning were actually better than I anticipated: 10.6 and 1/2. First target is 10.3.
My final goal is 9.7/8 with 9.10 being the point at which I should get back on the strict regime.
Good luck everyone today.

Lostmyunicorn · 02/06/2020 10:30

I don’t count leafy green veg like kale spinach etc unless I use oil in which case I just add for the oil. I do count for peas, broad beans etc, sweet corn, carrots and peppers. I use my Fitbit and don’t stress too much about getting the quantities absolutely exact. But it is useful to know that eg carrot is actually quite calorific compared to say a stick of celery.

agteacht · 02/06/2020 14:04

Hi all

Glad everyone's doing so well!

I am due to weigh in tomorrow, have been trying for two weeks to lose 2.2lb to get me to 10stone but I keep bouncing around, lose 1, put it back on etc. frustrating!! Not doing anything different to what I've been doing all along and was losing fine until now, but these last 2 are making me suffer.

Wanted to lose up to another 5 after that but we shall see.

Going to focus on my water for a few days in the hope that helps!!

RedLipsAndRosyCheeks · 02/06/2020 14:52

@Bestbees this is the recipe, it's delicious!

bluepixie · 02/06/2020 15:45

@agteacht u have lost so much and at a good pace your prob at close to your optimal now? These pounds till prob be though! Hope u break through

Despite exhaustion today am being strong . Had some extra cals of almond butter with some low carb bread as was craving carbs hugely! But should be in at 950 and 35g carbs tonight and 10000 steps

Bestbees · 02/06/2020 17:15

Thank you!

Another delicious aubergine thing is to half it, score flesh deeply and rub pesto into and roast. Delicious, low calorie option and feels luxurious.

bluepixie · 02/06/2020 17:50

Oh no I’ve ended on 1135 and 38 carbs
Not awful but not great
Just so hard when ur so tired
That low carb bread almond butter and my sneaky lattee this lunch ruined it

Anyways aiming for better tmrw . I usually get no steps done on work day but will be on 10000 today as going in a walk now

Bestbees · 02/06/2020 18:03

@cream123 that could have been a lot worse. Draw a line under it and tomorrow is another day.

Today has been easy so far, but the evening is the hardest for me. Off on a quick bike ride with the kids and then have work to do which should help. Finishing on 700 but will prob use that last 100 of a chunk of cheese or some olives tonight. But only if needed. I am not counting green veg so I am sure I have in reality had 800, but just keeping it fairly easy.

Meal plan for tomorrow:
No breakfast but if starving a boiled egg
Lunch Roquefort stuffed portabello mushroom and salad with olives and avo.
Dinner turkey mince stir fry.

Trying to keep fat up, drizzled a tsp of oil on veg at dinner. Feels like a treat and helps me feel full (hopefully!!)

bluepixie · 02/06/2020 18:23

Well done on ur first day bestbees!

Postmanbear · 02/06/2020 18:58

659 and 15g carbs for me today. I was in work today and it got to lunchtime and I found it easy not to eat it. Was starving at dinner time though!
Normally on a diet I would eat up to my calorie allowance with chocolate in the evenings but now I can’t there seems no point in eating if I’m not hungry. I hope this continues!

ilovemydogandmrobama2 · 02/06/2020 19:37

Not sure what is going on...

Weighed in this morning at 10st 4, which is 1lb gain.

Disappointed but not overly.

Weighed again in afternoon and despite only having water all day, gained another 2lbs Confused

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/06/2020 21:13

Today's gone a bit wrong as my parents came round for the first time in 3 months and I had an ice cream. I didn't even want it, just ate it without thinking. Then logged in at work for 2 hours, finished making ds's cake for tomorrow, wrapped all his presents and when I came down at 8.30 dh had 'forgotten' We hadn't eaten, and said he was just going to have a sandwich. I was so bloody cross, and starving. Dinner was supposed to be pork steak, all counted and even with the ice cream I would have ended ok. But no bloody way was I cooking for him after he 'forgot', and I couldn't just cook my own, so I ended up having salad with mayo and avocado and cheese which was far more cals than my planned meal and a lot more carbs.

Grrrr

Anyway, ending the day on 1400 cals, 80 odd grams of carbs, 15k steps (5.5k run and c25K with ds) - so could have been worse, but I'm still annoyed that I've fallen at the first hurdle.,

Tomorrow is ds's birthday so I'm going to try and fast most of the day. Dinner will be burgers (mine without bun and with salad) but inevitable birthday cake as I have practically sweat blood trying to make this badboy in 25* heat today....

@ilovemydogandMrObama that’s got to be hormonal surely? Don’t despair, it will come right.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/06/2020 21:19

@ilovemydogandmrobama2 a litre of water weighs a kilo so I'd ignore this afternoons weigh in as it's clearly just the weight of the water you have drunk. A little gain this morning could be down to lots of things, water retention for example. It sounds like you have had a good day today despite that so hopefully tomorrow it will be off again and have taken another one with it!

Postmanbear · 02/06/2020 21:46

@thenewaveragebear1983 that cake is amazing! Well done!

mumoflittlemice · 02/06/2020 22:35

@ilovemydogandmrobama2 I really feel for you. It's such a kick in the teeth when that happens isn't it?! I weighed in at a pound heavier this morning in spite of my best efforts yesterday and was a bit down hearted after that.

Undeterred I fasted till 1.30 today (a large mug of miso keeping me going this morning) taking me to about 19:5 and stuck to the plan: which today was large king prawns with homemade 'cocktail' sauce, (full fat mayo & a smidge of ketchup with smoked paprika), romaine lettuce strips, half avocado, tomato, cucumber & grated carrot with a sliver of brie and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice over the lot. Delish. Dinner was essentially the same again to use up the other half of the prawns and avocado with a dollop of full fat natural cottage cheese, skipped the lettuce and added a few slices of pickled beetroot and a good size gherkin. Loved it.

All in by 6 ish at 786 kcal and 38g carbs if MFP if to be believed!
