Blood sugar diet and fast800 support thread #18

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/03/2020 17:03

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Time restricted eating/TRE :
In addition to the fast800/ BSD plan you can incorporate a strategy of time restricted eating. Put simply, this means only eating between certain times each day to maximise your fasting time. TRE has shown to have positive results for weightloss, even if there is no calorie restriction, and increases insulin sensitivity/reduces insulin resistance. At first, try for a clear 12 hours without food each 24 hours, increasing to 16:8 as you get more adept at fasting.

You are all doing so well!

I, on the other hand, am not. Weighed in this morning and oh my days, the proof is in the pudding. Literally. Smile

So, drawing a line today. I can't put it off any longer. I've cooked 2 chicken breasts and that is my food for today, with salad, x 2 meals. Tracking everything rather than just eating it and ignoring it. And NO SUGAR. I have been maintaining sugary rubbish since lockdown started and it has absolutely got to stop.

Annoyingly, I've been exercising a lot and I could have been looking very trim but instead I've gained a few seven pounds and feeling very bloated and uncomfortable.

But anyway, enough dwelling in the past! Today, glorious sunny morning, I have new trainers (had to order because my old ones were falling to pieces) and will test them out on my run, then I have gardening jobs to do, so hopefully not rattling around the kitchen!

@thenewaveragebear1983 me too. I went mad yest and drank and ate everything. It was my date night but I was meant to be sensible but I wasn’t.
Anyways my 2 weeks on 800 starts today.
Chia almond flour flaxseed and raspberry brekkie was just a delight!
Chicken Avacado and brocolli salad for lunch
Cod in a cheese sauce and cauliflower for dinner

I will do this! And so will u @@thenewaveragebear198

Hi. I’d like to join this thread please.
I’ve slipped into some bad habits recently so I’m trying to get back into exercise and healthy eating as well as get off my phone and do something else instead.
Fasting has worked well for me before so I’m going to do that again.
I’ve got the fast800 book and want to give that a go.
If I go too strict, I do end up going a bit mad so I’ll relax the rules a little and like to include lots of lentils, beans and some pita bread for lunches.
I’m going to do some exercise in a bit then have the first meal of the day at around 2 of lentil and veg soup with pita bread and dinner at 7 which will be chicken and veg.
I need to remember to drink lots of water too!

Whattheladybirdsaidnext · 19/04/2020 18:14

Day 3: finished on 803 cal and 29g carbs. And I feel generally better and more in control. Which is a nice bonus!

bluepixie · 19/04/2020 18:32

855 and 32g carbs

thenewaveragebear1983 · 19/04/2020 18:58

@ILiveInSalemsLot welcome to the group!

Ok so today was a reasonable start. 1049 cals,,68g carbs, 13k steps (8.5 was a run) and have been active most of the day doing jobs. A few moments of mindless eating and a few bits i didn't weigh, but generally ok and a lot better than recent days.

Tomorrow: I have a big turkey drumstick defrosting which I am going to use to make a bone broth, which will be my lunch/snacks. Evening meal will be mince/bolognese unless I decide to go shopping. Otherwise will shop Tuesday and start my week's planned menu from then.

This week I've used a diabetes friendly cookbook that I'd forgotten about and have planned a few nice things. Some fish cakes which I've made before and are really tasty, plus a curry traybake thing as well.

Well I'm afraid I finally caved today, although not too badly. Have had period pain most of the day and this evening I let myself have a bowl of cornflakes as a treat (oh the decadence 😄). So for day 42 I have to record 995 calories and 89g carbs. Not too disheartened under the circumstances - back on track tomorrow.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 20/04/2020 07:47

@CiorstanMI I think one little blip won't do too much damage!

I'm 10.8.6 today, so about 4lb up since lockdown began. Could be worse I suppose. However, I am still chasing my final target weight of 9.13 so I really am going to try to be 100% on plan this week.

I downloaded a kindle book about emotional eating that has an audio hypnosis link in it so I'm going to try that today if I get half an hour's peace!

Yesterday went well. I stuck to my plan mainly, but did eat some chocolate after dinner.
I’ve been doing 20 mins walking in the garden (just in a circle around the lawn with the dcs) and a 20 minute indoor workout using weights.
I’m going to carry on with that and eat lunch at 2pm and dinner at 6.30.
Today’s plan is Pitta bread with chickpeas and salad and dinner and chicken and veg for dinner.

Whattheladybirdsaidnext · 20/04/2020 10:49

I’m hungry and haven’t planned today’s meals... eek. Need to stay away from the fridge till I’ve organised myself.

IgglePiggleNotInBed · 20/04/2020 12:47

Do you mind if I join this thread? Had a baby last June and still haven't lost the weight.... And was overweight to start with Blush I'm 5ft 1 and 13st 13... So need to lose a good 4 stone to be a healthy BMI. I lost a lot of weight very successfully a few years ago on a ketogenic diet so think I am more than capable of doing this, I've read the book and am ready to go. Going to do IF 18:6 as I am a volume eater and would rather 1 or 2 big meals than 3 small!

bluepixie · 20/04/2020 12:56

Welcome @igglepiggle

Greek yoghurt and berries
Feta salad and coffee
Ready made soup with extra chicken thrown in as working till late today and will be tired and won’t want to cook

Will be 880 and 48 carbs - a bit more on my usual carb intake I aim for but should still be ok hopefully!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 20/04/2020 15:24

Welcome @IgglePiggleNotInBed !

Just been to the supermarket, got everything in for my menu so it's all
Systems go today!

Had a cheese omelette for lunch with salad, plus sugar free jelly. Managed to get a reduced piece of salmon at Asda so will have that for dinner. Currently roasting a big turkey drumstick to make my bone broth tonight as well, ready for tomorrow.

agteacht · 20/04/2020 15:54

Had to giggle when I read about your cornflakes @CiorstanMI
You are a saint on this diet!
I'm not going to discuss my weekend because it wasn't good. I keep getting 'led astray' on video calls with friends...

So far so good today and chicken curry with cauli rice planned for tea.

Whattheladybirdsaidnext · 20/04/2020 17:41

What options are there to put with Greek yoghurt? All I have tried is frozen berries.

Whattheladybirdsaidnext · 20/04/2020 18:44

Kitchen closed, 807cal, 32g carbs

bluepixie · 20/04/2020 19:33

I do any berries really. Sometimes I sprinkle flaxseed or chia over the top.

Closing kitchen with 880 cals and 43g carbs

CiorstanMI · 20/04/2020 20:19

Day 43, closing the kitchen at 844 calories and 46g carbs.

Looks like lots of us have had a good day today 🙂

thenewaveragebear1983 · 20/04/2020 21:22

@Whattheladybirdsaidnext I like frozen raspberries and peanut butter but I warn you now, it's almost too delicious. I daren't have it too often.

OP posts:
IgglePiggleNotInBed · 20/04/2020 21:28

I've only ended up having around 500 calories and 9g of carbs today but I'm just not hungry! Little concerned that's very low so planning a nice breakfast as I'm off to bed soon. Do you think it's an issue to be that low just for one day? Had something to eat at 2 and then had to feed baby, entertain baby, put baby to bed etc etc and

thenewaveragebear1983 · 20/04/2020 21:33

Good start for me today but the end of the day I've struggled. Not lots of carbs but a fair few calories. Ended on 1500 cals Blushnot really terrible considering but it's not fast800! I did run 6.5km and do 20k steps though.

Tomorrow: no run but I'm going to do yoga and a hiit workout. I've been boiling up my bone broth and will have that, with a chicken tikka traybake for dinner.

CiorstanMI · 20/04/2020 21:45

Just realised I forgot to record my weigh in for the end of week 6. And it's a good one! I lost a whole kilo this week (2.2lb), which means I've lost 8.1kg so far (just a little shy of 18lb). So weird how weight seems to drop off in lumps and bumps - it had actually gone up in the middle of the week. This diet really is quite amazing.

agteacht · 20/04/2020 22:50

18lb in 6 weeks is fantastic @CiorstanMI

I'm really hoping for 14lb but not that hopeful if I don't stop having bad Saturdays!

Finishing up today on 914 cals and 25g carbs

Planning some form of fishcakes tomorrow.

bluepixie · 21/04/2020 07:29

Wow 18 pounds well done u!!!

I’ve not moved my own fault. Hopefully will this week ....planning 800 and 20 carbs today to get things moving again!
