Blood sugar diet and fast800 support thread #18

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Time restricted eating/TRE :
In addition to the fast800/ BSD plan you can incorporate a strategy of time restricted eating. Put simply, this means only eating between certain times each day to maximise your fasting time. TRE has shown to have positive results for weightloss, even if there is no calorie restriction, and increases insulin sensitivity/reduces insulin resistance. At first, try for a clear 12 hours without food each 24 hours, increasing to 16:8 as you get more adept at fasting.

@thenewaveragebear1983

Tomorrow is fresh start... need to get a good few days under my belt and then the will power should increase

bluepixie · 01/04/2020 19:40

Well done @agteacht amazing start!!!
Welcome @pinkeid - plan plan plan and lots of water!

I’m in at 964 and 40 carbs due to an error with weighing the chicken! And a bit of my sons pancake! Will weigh in and report my weight tmrw to shame myself !!!

agteacht · 01/04/2020 19:51

Thank you all!!

But today didn't go to plan and I blame Michael Mosley! I made beef rendang from the recipe book and it was YUM. Totally recommend. BUT I misread the calories - it was 484!! I thought 200 and something until went back to check it later for MFP. Damn coconut milk.

So have ended the day on 1038 and 42g carbs. Oh well. Will have to be much more vigilant tomorrow.

Hi @Pinkied - I am only a week in so can empathize with the willpower but just keep ploughing through.

Pinkied · 01/04/2020 21:26

Thanks for welcome... day 1 planned so let's see how it goes!

bluepixie · 02/04/2020 08:04

So I’m 11.1.8 so one pound more to get to where I was before my carb binge !
Hopefully in the tens finaly for end of next week (I think I may manage 3 off in a week to get me there?)
I used to do 5 days on this diet then weekend off. I did loose doing that but there was a lot of up and down. Not doing that this weekend so hopefully will go down down down down and I’ll be nicely 10 something at some point next week. Fingers crossed

@Pinkied good luck for first day. Took me a few days to get used to the different way off eating.

Good day everyone x

Pinkied · 02/04/2020 09:09

So day one. Weighed in 77.7kg.. shocking.

Motivation high today, feel mentally ready to take this challenge

Decided I'm doing 2 meals a day as not a great fan of breakfast

Have great days everyone... I'll report in on day 1 later

X

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/04/2020 09:15

@Pinkied but think of it this way- that's the biggest number you're going to see. If you stick to the plan, I promise you, you will lose weight. Have you done your measurements? It can be very motivating if you see those inches dropping too!

I'm 1lb up this morning but I totally deserve it so I'm just going to dust myself off and start again. Off out for a run!

Pinkied · 02/04/2020 14:02

@thenewaveragebear1983 it's a very good point! So far so good today... hungry but went for a walk to distract

bluepixie · 02/04/2020 19:07

Am feeling very snotty and unwell (it’s not cornoa) and very very hungry really struggled
Ended up on 1300 and 66g carb .
Will try harder tmrw

CaptainBrickbeard · 02/04/2020 19:13

I’ve gained weight every day this week and today I cracked and had four Thornton’s chocolates, gin and noodles. I get to 3.30pm and the snacking urge comes on so strongly (that was the chocolates today. Gin and noodles came later). I can’t seem to counter it, whatever I do.

CaptainBrickbeard · 02/04/2020 19:14

The Thornton’s chocolates were a box from Christmas that haven’t troubled me up til now - honestly didn’t care about them but being locked up 24 hours a day with them clearly tested me beyond my limits. And now the box is open Shock.

CiorstanMI · 02/04/2020 19:20

My daily report is 882 calories and 50g carbs for day 25. Not too bad but I need to watch those carbs don't creep up again.

Welcome @Pinkied and food luck. I know what you mean about the struggle with willpower but, although this diet is very strict, I've found it's the easiest one to stick to that I've ever tried. It seems that as long as you keep your protein above 50g and your carbs below 50g you just don't really feel that hungry (or at least not that sort of desperate hungry where you'd trample over kittens and small children if they got between you and a slice toast!). It's almost spooky. And the fast weight loss helps keep you motivated as well.

Pinkied · 02/04/2020 21:59

Hi all. So day 1 834 calls, 35g carbs, just under 5000 steps. Tried to drink lots of water (weak squash) and haven't been to toilet so much for ages!
Hoping for good scales visit in morning!

Catch up with you all tomorrow

agteacht · 02/04/2020 22:02

We can do this guys!

Finished up today on 935 cals and 33g carbs. Always end up around 930 for some reason!!

I had coconut microwave mug bread earlier - anyone ever heard of it?! It's basically coconut flour, a bit of butter and an egg white. Microwaved in a mug for 90 seconds 😂
Was randomly nice and helped with a bread craving.

Been trying to find recipes to add into my day because am getting a bit sick of eggs!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 03/04/2020 07:47

Morning. Yesterday was a bit of a write off for me. To be fair my food was very good, no snacks etc but then after the kids went to bed I just crashed and ate 2 slices of toast and a cookie! I don't know what that was about, I didn't want them even and I had just been congratulating myself on a good day! Oh well.

Today I'm going to do my yoga this morning, and maybe go for a run this afternoon. I'm planning to fast a bit longer today to make up for last night! Not sure what our dinner will be tonight, but it will be something from the freezer as we have nothing fresh in.

So weigh in after day 1 and 4lb down Smile
Giving me the willpower for day 2. Have good days guys

thenewaveragebear1983 · 03/04/2020 08:35

Well done @Pinkied , told you it's magic! Star

I've started as I mean to go on and have done yoga. I've started a new 30 days programme, this one's called Home, which seemed appropriate in the circumstances

Hi everyone. Dropping back into this really great thread. So I started in January at 12st 3. After much upping and downing now 11st 2 and trying to get to the elusive 10s. Slow progress but I keep losing and gaining the same couple of pounds. Can't seem to get the big losses (like 3 or 4 pounds a week) others get but trying to get my mojo back with this genuinely good diet! Starting again as would like to maintain the gains and feel healthy and fab for when we're all finally allowed back to real life 😁. Really well done to everyone who's managing to lose or maintain given the circumstances.

agteacht · 03/04/2020 09:56

Well done @Pinkied !! Amazing
Hi @MMC20 !

So sorry for the TMI but this morning I got my period for the first time since having my daughter in December. Maybe it's somehow linked to this diet as my hormones reset!??

Very unexpected.
And what typically do people see with their weight, as normally I would see a gain when I have a period (but it's well over a year since I've had one!)

bluepixie · 03/04/2020 10:15

I’m feeling shocking this am! Sore throat and in bed!!! Hoping that means I don’t feel hungry!!!
Well done on your lose @Pinkied
And @agteacht that coconut bread thing sounds nice!

Today I had planned cod and chick pea stew and salad at lunch but really don’t feel like it as not well. So will see wot happens but determined to stay low!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 03/04/2020 10:23

@agteacht it is quite common actually for it to unsettle your cycle a bit because oestrogen is stored in body fat, so when you lose weight you also lose the hormones which can bring on your period. Or the opposite. Also, all hormones have a homeostatic balance so they sort of respond to each other, as you settle your insulin, you'll settle other hormones as well (which is why it helps PCOS for example)
