BSD and Fast800 support thread #17

thenewaveragebear1983 · 06/01/2020 10:51

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Time restricted eating/TRE :
In addition to the fast800/ BSD plan you can incorporate a strategy of time restricted eating. Put simply, this means only eating between certain times each day to maximise your fasting time. TRE has shown to have positive results for weightloss, even if there is no calorie restriction, and increases insulin sensitivity/reduces insulin resistance. At first, try for a clear 12 hours without food each 24 hours, increasing to 16:8 as you get more adept at fasting.

Ooh fluffyears I’m not sure keto flu usually involves vomiting! Poor you!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 07/01/2020 16:54

@FluffyEarMuffs I've never heard of keto flu causing vomiting either, maybe you have a bug as well? Hope you feel better soon Thanks

I've had a good day today, did 10 mins with my kettlebell and a 6km run (tough going after a very inactive few weeks) and had a nice shake for breakfast. Just had a chicken thigh for 'lunch' because I'm now off to work so will eat properly at 8pm when I get home.

Tomorrow I'm at work across the middle of the day so that usually works well for me. I will prep my chia seeds in the morning and make a shake to drink in the car on my way in, then will have dinner at 5pm with the dc, which will be a tikka roast chicken and salad.

Feeling good today. Not hungry at all, and although my run was hard that was more to do with lack of fitness than lack of energy.

Should end the day on 1050 cals, 44g carbs which I'm happy with

Omg - just had my ass handed to me by Adriene in 30 days of yoga, bloody ab day! But... I did it all this year, no stopping & no breaks. And I could do all the poses this year because my belly wasn't in the way. Really noticed the difference between this year & being 45lbs heavier last year!

Had the sweats again power walking up the hill to pick up DD. I'm going to bring a snack with me (for both of us!) To help with this & do the walk back home (40mins total up & down a big hill).

@FluffyEarMuffs Agree on Keto flu not usually involving being sick - be gentle with yourself!

CaptainBrickbeard · 07/01/2020 17:35

I have seen nausea and diarrhoea listed as possible effects of keto flu but not vomiting. That sounds dreadful!

I just had the chicken and mushroom ‘pie’ from the Fast 800 recipe book. It was really nice and also absolutely nothing like a pie! I had the lentil and feta salad for lunch and the spiced apple porridge for breakfast so I’m definitely embracing the cookbook now!

It’s day 6 and I haven’t felt very hungry today. I had the energy to go for a swim that I hadn’t planned to do. And best of all, I have been super productive and focused on work these past two days. It feels like such a positive start to January!

onanothertrain · 07/01/2020 18:52

Good day today, under 800 calories and no hunger. Weather too wild for a run so did 30DS instead.

TheForgetfulCat · 07/01/2020 19:03

Can I join in? Perimenopause has hit and I've got about 1.5 stone that needs to go, mostly from round the middle. I have absolutely no self control where refined carbs and sugar are involved and the BSD seems to help since I just can't eat the damn things.

Currently 12 st 6, getting to 11 stone would be amazing, 11 and a half Id be happy with. At 5'9 that would give me a BMI of 23ish, plus allow me to fit comfortably back into my size 12 clothes.

Aiming for 800 calories plus more exercise. Teenage DSs sticky toffee pudding was a difficult moment 😂

Kimlek · 07/01/2020 19:04

What’s 30DS OnAnotherTrain?
Does anyone have the BSD recipe book AND the fast800 recipe book please? I have the former and just wondered if fast800 is brand new recipes or a bit of duplication & whether it’s worth me getting or not?

onanothertrain · 07/01/2020 19:13

kimlek it's Jillian Michael's 30 day shred exercise programme, its great.

Kimlek · 07/01/2020 19:51

OOoh is that on YouTube or where can I find that please! ‘Shred’ sounds perfect!

CaptainBrickbeard · 07/01/2020 20:01

The 30DS involves a LOT of jumping jacks - I prefer Jillian’s Ripped in 30 if you find the Shred doesn’t suit you! She is brilliant and so motivational. She once did a MN web chat and answered one of my questions so kindly. I love her.

I can’t remember if I have the BSD cookbook or the Fast800 cookbook actually - I tend to use the terms quite interchangeably so am not sure.

CaptainBrickbeard · 07/01/2020 20:02

Oh sorry, meant to say that I think you can find the Shred and Ripped on YouTube. I got the DVDs for not much on Amazon as well.

Maccalenny · 07/01/2020 20:11

Phoenix well done on keeping going through day 6 of yoga! I managed about half....

Lovely to read about how well everyone is doing, even while fighting the carb flu etc.

FluffyEarMuffs · 07/01/2020 20:21

Thank you everyone 😘

I feel absolutely fine now but I felt awful before. I have found nausea listed a lot as a symptom, and I throw up quite easily when in pain as well, which I was from my headache - which was vile.

I am feeling back in top of this now though, so I hope it lasts.

I had an Able and Cole delivery this morning, so I made this for DH and I this evening:

www.abelandcole.co.uk/recipes/butter-roast-wild-alaskan-salmon-with-lemon-caper--parsley

It was just lovely 🙌🏻

PhoenixMama · 07/01/2020 21:26

That salmon sounds amazing @FluffyEarMuffs

@Maccalenny When she went back into boat the second time I nearly died!

@KIMLek I have both, I'm not a huge fan of the Fast800 one, I make way more from the BSD one. Also a lot of the recipes in Fast800 are around 500 cals which is too much for 1 meal for me.

Closing the kitchen at 889 which I'm happy with, 30 mins of yoga and 60 mins of walking (up a big hill twice!)

Tomorrow will be harder because I'm out of the house all day so will be buying lunch. I am however getting a haircut and I want to do something really different. Not exactly sure what but hoping I'm wowed by the stylist... maybe a 'Lob'? I feel like I need a new look!

onanothertrain · 07/01/2020 21:39

kimlek I have a few of her dvds, mostly from amazon and like them all. Be warned though, they are not easy! 30DS I think gives the best / fastest results and it's only 25 minutes or so.

Kimlek · 07/01/2020 21:41

Thanks pheonix I think I’ll stick to the one I have in that case and adapt other recipe books. I had a blunt cut ‘lob’ just before Xmas... very easy!

Kimlek · 07/01/2020 21:48

We don’t have a DVD player 😱 I need to finally work out how the smart tv works and if I can download fitness stuff rather than dramas!!

FluffyEarMuffs · 07/01/2020 22:30

@Kimlek I don't have the BSD cook book, but I have the 800 recipe one on kindle app, and I am not impressed. The recipes are so simple, they are rather bland and simplistic!

I need more flavours.

I massively enjoyed the cauliflower and lentil dahl from the actual 800 information book by MM, as it has a few recipes in the back. It uses spices and everything so it feel more like real cooking. If you don't have the book, I can copy it down for you if you fancy it?

Is there anything particular in the blood sugar cook book that's worth trying?

Kimlek · 08/01/2020 07:03

fluffy I don’t think the BSD recipe book is too bad actually but I go off piste quite a lot with herbs and spices! I always put tons more garlic & often ginger in too. We had a chicken & lentil thing at the weekend from the book which was tasty. The skinny cottage pie is good but it’s basically a bolognese with sweet potato mash... I adore the fish pie and make extra sauce for courgetti etc. There’s a recipe thread linked at the start of this thread. I’ll go through the book today & pop in some of my faves on there. bears chicken passanda (not in the book) on the recipe thread was lovely and a hit for the whole family although I’ll use breast next time.
Weight today same as yesterday and Monday... a bit disappointed that it’s slow given I’ve been 800 for last 7 days. Need to up my water though and remember my wellmoman vitamins! I’ll be walking the dog again & doing a tennis lesson.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 08/01/2020 07:12

The simplest thing I make is literally tikka spices and yoghurt mixed together and smeared over chicken thigh fillets, baked in the oven. It's sooo tasty, the dc love it as well. I don't really use the recipes as I try to do things that everyone can eat and the recipe books aren't really to our tastes as a family. You can also look online for Keto recipes, paleo recipes etc as they follow a similar set of rules.

SegregateMumBev · 08/01/2020 07:16

I find the BSD cook book a bit hit and miss.

The topping on the cottage pie is cauliflower, not sweet potato, surely?

I don't eat meat, so a lot of the recipes aren't for me. But often I find the ingredients or instructions too vague - 1 red pepper for instance. What size? Chopped, sliced? In another recipe olive oil is listed as in ingredient, but doesn't then feature in the instructions.

My go-tos from it are the Japanese omelette, the Vietnamese pho, and the Thai fish cakes.

I'm quite good at posting on the recipes thread, so you'll find my comments on there Grin

Colourmylife1 · 08/01/2020 07:16

Day 6 for me and up 0.3kg. I normally don’t weigh every day so I’m trying not to worry about fluctuations! I’ve been closer to 900 than 800 calories most days but carbs under 50g and I’m trying to be quite active. I hope everyone has a good day.

CaptainBrickbeard · 08/01/2020 07:26

I have checked and it’s the BSD cookbook that I’ve got. I really like it! The food i have made from it so far has been really nice and there was tons of flavour in the chicken and mushroom ‘pie’. The main thing is though that it takes a lot of the thinking out of it, which helps me to stick to the plan. That said, I thought I would use the shakes a lot to keep things simple and I really haven’t. Maybe that’s testament to how helpful I’ve found the book?

I’m on Day 7. I’m a daily weigher and so far have lost weight every single day. Just over half a pound this morning takes my overall weight loss to 8lbs! It’s amazing.

Best of all though, I have zipped up a dress this morning that already feels noticeably looser. Yay!

Gjem · 08/01/2020 07:52

Hi all! Just joined. I started fast 800 on Jan 1st and have just had my first weigh in - 5.9kg lost. Really chuffed. Feeling good generally, I’ve woken up with a bit of a headache today but I think that’s down to having a late night more than anything. This week I’m going to try drinking more water and cross my fingers for another good loss a week from now!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 08/01/2020 08:12

@Gjem wow that's amazing, that's over 10lbs?! Well done!

I'm down to 10.9 today so 3.5lbs lost this week so far.
