BSD and Fast800 support thread #17

thenewaveragebear1983 · 06/01/2020 10:51

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Time restricted eating/TRE :
In addition to the fast800/ BSD plan you can incorporate a strategy of time restricted eating. Put simply, this means only eating between certain times each day to maximise your fasting time. TRE has shown to have positive results for weightloss, even if there is no calorie restriction, and increases insulin sensitivity/reduces insulin resistance. At first, try for a clear 12 hours without food each 24 hours, increasing to 16:8 as you get more adept at fasting.

Haha fluffy that’s hillarious! I don’t know why we think it’s a good idea to drink and then next day regret it
Then do it again! I’m feeling like I need some carbs too. I suspect bday lunch planning won’t go to plan.

CaptainBrickbeard · 08/03/2020 06:47

I’ve been away again and had lots to drink, higher carb than normal food wise, definitely less water but plenty of walking and being active and miraculously have lost another pound.

This means I’ve lost....

TWO STONE IN TOTAL!

And I have a BMI which is UNDER 35.

I want to lose a further two stone and get my BMI under 30. This feels so achievable now. It’s only been just over two months!

FluffyEarMuffs · 08/03/2020 11:28

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 WELL DONE @CaptainBrickbeard 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

That's amazing!

Teaismynewfriend · 08/03/2020 15:23

Hello
Well done on all of the losses and hi to the newbies! I've been on a skiing holiday, counting the damage this morning at +3lb. I'm also feeling unwell and can't shake off a head cold, so struggling to get back on plan. I've given myself today to eat healthy but no counting, then will get back to counting tomorrow. It's so hard when you don't feel well!!!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 08/03/2020 15:42

10.1.6 today, although that is now and I've just run 14km so maybe a little lower than I actually am. However, that's a positive result still especially considering I've felt like I'd lost my mojo a bit towards the end of the week. That's my lowest weight in a very long time. Hopefully a 3rd week of strict BSD-Ing and a few 800 days and I'll be in the 9's!!

I am so hungry today - all day today it’s been non stop and my willpower has been non existent. Wonder if it is because I had carbs yesterday - toasted muffin and cake - and it’s set off cravings again. Really finding it tough this evening.

CheekyMango · 08/03/2020 20:39

Hi @thenewaveragebear1983 ☺️ When there's a new thread please tag me, I'm considering the challenge Xx

CiorstanMI · 08/03/2020 21:11

Well I'm all ready to start tomorrow. Starting position: I'm 49 (probably perimenopausal) and currently weigh 74kg. Let's see what happens ... Good luck to us all for the coming week!

Thanks to @thenewaveragebear1983 and to @Kimlek for your advice. I've planned my menu for the next few weeks and now have 3 weeks' worth of low cal/low carb meals cooked and cooling, ready to go into the freezer. I'm not going to worry too much about calories or exercise for the first couple of days and just concentrate on low carb (which will be quite a shock to my pasta and bread loving system!).

Kimlek · 08/03/2020 22:02

That sounds like a great plan @ciorstanMI and batching coking is definitely the way to go! If you normally eat a lot if pasta and bread you’ll probably feel quite different quite quickly!! Huge good luck!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/03/2020 06:57

@CheekyMango what I tend to do is post the new thread link into here at around 990 posts (so will probably be later this week!) if you keep it in your watched/threads I'm on list

@CiorstanMI sounds like a great start, and as kimlek says if you usually eat a lot of carbs then you will get good results.

I struggled a bit over the weekend with sugar cravings and I think because I did eventually succumb to them I ended up really wanting more. It's back to basics again for me this week, it really worked a few weeks back so I want another good 'on it' week like that.

I haven't planned meals for the week yet as I am a bit worried about the supermarkets supplies due to CV19 so I will hopefully go and get a normal shop in today. My plan is to fast/bone broth today and tomorrow until early dinner , then attempt another week of 800 calorie days by having a light lunch and a main meal each day.

It's not the meals, it's the snacks for me though: if I snack, I eat far, far too much- so again this week I am determined to return to my sugar free, snack free state.

I've pre-prepped some antipasti style veg though in olive oil as I've been buying it from the tapas range and it's very expensive, so thought I could have that with salad over the week for lunches.

I’ve put on 4 lbs in not following plan for 2 days. Is this possible! I’m feeling very disheartened ! I was back on it yest I did 850 cals and 28g carbs and it’s still saying 4 on from Friday (so 11.6!!!!!) ? I’ve not been to the loo for a few days (sorry guys). Right stepping up today 800 cals max allowed.
:(

Kimlek · 09/03/2020 07:22

Happy Monday everyone!
Agh cream123 that’s what happens to me. It’s weird though as I’ve been bang on 11.0.6 for the last 4/5 days not an ounce more nor less!!
bear I have bones from duck legs & rib bones dyou think they’ll work for a bony broth?
Come on cheekymango you can do this!!!

bluepixie · 09/03/2020 07:35

Oh kimlek :( ok..ugh it’s making me ramp it up today. Meeting a friend and I know I won’t have anything but herbal tea! Reassuring u can put that on too so quickly. I hope it’s off tmrw?!
Can u add some steps or drop ur carbs to get ur scales moving again

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/03/2020 07:44

@Cream123 it's definitely possible because it's not really to do with how many calories you eat it's to do with how your body then stores the glycogen you've worked so hard to deplete, and also with every molecule of glycogen you store about 2-3 molecules of water. If you're quite muscular you can store a lot of glycogen in those muscles (for me it can be as much as 5/6lbs) so I always say on here that if it's pounds and pounds overnight (on or off) it's usually water. That's why even when you're at target and maintaining, your weight will fluctuate, sometimes quite dramatically.

OP posts:
Kimlek · 09/03/2020 10:08

cream123 it sounds daft but this is what seems to happen with me... I’m static for days despite whether Im 800 or not then I’ll drop a 1lb or so. I’m not super strict (remember Freddo) but I’m mostly on BSD most of the time. I couldn’t keep this up if it was 100% 800 cals total BSD all if the time - I’ve been doing this since 27th Dec so almost 3 months. I’ve dropped a whole stone and feel much slimmer and definitely healthier albeit no one has noticed! My BMI is just and only just at the top of okay. So although I want to lose more and will, I’m happy to go steady. What I need to be very careful of is it not creeping back up!!

FaFoutis · 09/03/2020 10:38

Thanks to all of you on here. I have been lurking and using your advice. I just finished the 14 days on fast 800 and lost 13 pounds. That gets me back in the healthy BMI.
A PP said it was like witchcraft, and it is!

bluepixie · 09/03/2020 15:03

Yes I totally agree u can’t do BSD long term. There is more to life than being hungry and watching what we eat! You have lost a great amount and it will be more sustainable if it’s a little at a time.
I was hoping to shift my first 9 pounds to get me to 11 very quickly as I know it slows down then for me...but it’s my own fault for drinking and eating at weekend
Anyways today is another day
Yoghurt for brekkie
Greek salad lunch
Bolengase dinner no rice or pasta
Comes in at 800 and 30g carb
Will report back tmrw. Hope it’s lower than this am!!!! Luckily not much on this weekend apart from one dinner and me and DH are not drinking and I’m driving so hopefully I can stick to it better . All goes wrong when I drink!!!

CaptainBrickbeard · 09/03/2020 18:35

I’m still really hungry! Couldn’t go very long this morning so ended up having an early breakfast and then eating more throughout the day. Kept it at bay as long as possible with herbal tea and sparkling water. I don’t know what’s come over me the past couple of days but I’m fecking ravenous. Have lots of social events throughout March which all involve eating and drinking so I could do to be super strict right now... I’m just keeping carbs as low as I can to try to keep a handle on it.

Plus side - I am sleeping amazingly well at the moment! I don’t know if it’s diet-related or not but it’s certainly very welcome.

Welcome to all the newcomers! I’ve lost two stone since 2nd January and that’s with some slip ups along the way so I can verify that this is a highly effective diet. It’s honestly been life-changing!

bluepixie · 09/03/2020 19:28

By long term I meant the 800 version of bsd is not possible to do long term!

@captain is ur period due? I’m always hungry then? Or sometimes I just have a hungry day! It’s so hard those days. Hope u didn’t eat all the carbs in the world like I would!

Closed shop at 780 and 30 carbs. Am feeling ok. Aiming same tmrw. Finally first day I’ve managed the 800...

CiorstanMI · 09/03/2020 19:59

Well first day completed (1,025 cals and 52g carbs) - not suffering too many carb-withdrawal symptoms as yet but rather nervous it's going to hit tomorrow. It's amazing what has carbs in it - the balsamic vinegar I put in the dressing for my lunchtime salad was what pushed me over the 50g limit. It never even occurred to me that vinegar might have carbs in it - clearly I have much to learn!

@Cream123 - congratulations on the cals/carbs count for today - that's pretty impressive.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/03/2020 19:59

@Cream123 no I think the 800 does have its limits, although the Mediterranean diet is definitely possible to do long term; in fact, if you want to maintain your weightloss, you'll need to largely follow the med diet (maybe a few additional carbs or treat days) because if you revert back to a high carb lifestyle you will regain (same as with any diet really)

I am closing up today on 880 cals, 25g carbs, and a rather meagre 8.8k Steps (very low for me!) my food's been good considering my lunch was totally unplanned!
Tomorrow, I'm going to go for a short run in the morning if it's dry. I'm working in the afternoon so will probably have a bowl of soup before that and then have dinner after my evening session (chicken thighs and salad) - so should hopefully be another 800 cals day.

OP posts:
thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/03/2020 20:03

@CiorstanMI balsamic does yes, because it's like an enriched vinegar. I still like a spoonful on salad though. Other weirdly high carb things are: prawns, and especially crab sticks/seafood sticks; vegan cheeses and dairy free products. I have found to my peril after freely eating away and then only checking afterwards!

OP posts:
CiorstanMI · 09/03/2020 20:18

@thenewaveragebear Prawns? That does seem bizarre. Fortunately for me I really don't like them but I can imagine that someone who did like sea insects shellfish would feel quite cheated by that.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/03/2020 20:57

Yep as meat/fish goes, prawns are quite high carb!

OP posts:
Kimlek · 09/03/2020 21:55

I’ve had a rubbish day... a brisk dog walk & pilates all good but started cooking the sausage casserole too early so by the time it was ready to serve there were hardly any sausages left in it! Heaven knows how many sausages I need to put on MFP! Half a pack of pumpkin seeds and then for some bizarre reason a couple of glasses of wine! The bone broth is still simmering away and despite it smelling delicious initially its less inviting now & Im but not sure I’d want to drink it. I do think a fast would be good as feeling enormous but what else to have if the bone broth isn’t tasty?
