Bear, the Type 2 community online are totally into it. And Type 1's, for whom MM does state it's not written for, are certainly interested.

Mind you, my team at Kings College Hospital, are to be fair, top of their game, and driving a lot of the diabetic research that goes on, so a bit more open minded than maybe some teams from the middle-of-nowhere!!

Oblomov18 · 23/05/2018 12:37

I too wonder if it's faddy. Only because a lot of things are, even if based on good principals.

But the research on this is good.

Plus people are waking up to the idea of sugar being a culprit. Jamie Oliver and his sugar tax. I doubt that will go backwards now.

Like going green, more recycling, less printing, rainforests. I think that will go forward, never back, not faddy. Primary school children will take it forward. Not back.

thefishwhocouldwish · 23/05/2018 12:48

After a bit of a stall, I'm down 600g over the last two days so 500g away from my goal for next Tuesday. I'd love to get lower if possible as since the first week I seem to average just over one kg a week. Then I can put some of it back on while in Dubai. We've just booked a dinner on the QE2 for our anniversary, where I was gratified to see that the veggie menu was £20 cheaper than the carnivores' menu!

Turnip and Primal, good luck for your interviews. Well done on loss too turnip.

snowglobes there was a piece on Trust Me I'm a Doctor earlier this year where a study showed that fizzy water increased ghrelin levels even though it's calorie free.

Snowglobes · 23/05/2018 15:06

How bizarre fish because I’ve read the opposite! Carbonated drinks like coke etc raise ghrelin levels but carbonated water doesn’t - I thought. I’ll now have to try and find where I read this! Albeit, it doesn’t seem to increase my hungry hormones!

Snowglobes · 23/05/2018 15:18

‪I think the research you’re talking about is quite recent - 2017 but they didn’t look at carbonated water. They tested soda, tap water, flat soda and diet soda. The research I’m referring to is older but specifically includes carbonated water. Not sure if this link from the BBC will work,
Is sparkling water really bad for you? www.bbc.com/future/story/20150911-is-sparkling-water-really-bad-for-you?ocid=ww.social.link.twitter via @BBC_Future‬

Snowglobes · 23/05/2018 15:27

Agh that’s the wrong one!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 23/05/2018 15:40

Oblomov I think it can be perceived as faddy, especially when people hear the long list of things I don’t/won’t eat. I think particularly my parents’ generation struggle to associate sugar with disease- they see it as a delightful treat for my children but fail to see/comprehend/understand that my kids have much more of it than they did, and it’s in a more devious way now it’s included in everything. Case in point: my Ds age 2.5 has been sugar free Monday to Saturday and has one treat on a Sunday, since January. Yesterday, Dm and df looked after him for the day, and he had 3 cakes. Why?? Why 3?? And yet Dm has always struggled with her weight and has been told she is prediabetic. But she can’t equate giving a two year old a treat with giving a 60 year old diabetes. I think the Jamie Oliver campaign is good, but it’s going to backfire because of all the sweetness being added chemically. I suppose the real crux is T1 is unavoidable but T2 is completely avoidable. And, I’m the nicest possible way, the majority of people who develop T2, myself included, will do so as a result of eating too much, too much sugar, being overweight etc. I suppose then that group are split into those who attempt to do something completely different to change if, or carry on as they are. I think the nhs has a real challenge on its hands!

Amazingly delicious supper. Still going well here!

ChocEggNoThanks · 23/05/2018 18:32

Not a bad day today. Two decent meals and some raspberries and cream. I had the pudding because I was getting that picky feeling like I wanted to graze. Going to have a big glass of water and a cuppa now to round things off.

Bowels were back to daily for a while there but not this week. Day two of no poo but I'm not really feeling uncomfortable. Maybe my body is adapting.

Does anyone else worry about eating lots of fat? It's so entrenched the whole saturated fat thing. My Fitness Pal sometimes gives me the red warning writing about fat Confused

Snowglobes · 23/05/2018 18:40

Totally agree bear and the problem is exacerbated because we all develop a propensity for sweet foods. It begins before toddler’s 3 cakes too. Consider baby weaning (mine included) - it’s sweet tasting fruits & veg. Purée apple, carrot & pear etc. The veg my youngest prefers are all relatively sweet. Sugar is indeed in everything - my kids are amazed at the amounts in ‘savoury’ foods. Another good reason to be avoiding processed foods. But it’s not easy!

Snowglobes · 23/05/2018 18:48

chocEgg the fat content can’t be that much if we are only consuming 800 cals - that’s what I’m saying anyway, Although I’m not loosing much, I’m definitely loosing it around my middle.
I skipped b’fast but had a few coffees. A cod & fennel dish from the recipe book for lunch, 2 bits of 80% chocolate (77cals each piece) and now a glass of red. Bad, bad, bad. I’ll calculate it later. I’m terrible for retrospective calculating on MFP. I’m out tonight too but will only have one drink!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 23/05/2018 18:51

Choc nope, eat as much good fat as you want. It should be the majority of your calories.

Oblomov the clever guts book has lots of information about diabetes and foods you can eat to support your body. I can’t remember if you said you’d read it or not. Apple cider vinegar is mentioned as it slows absorption of glucose, among other things.

Lots of calories today because in addition to my food I found a bag of pork scratchings which I gleefully ate then realised it contained three servings!! Yummy though.

The clever guts book is good but I’m starting to be a bit freaked out by the idea that my gut is actually a living breathing animal alien inside me! I’m going to take a few ideas from it to start after my holiday- I cannot eat fermented anything (sorry Michael, it’s just grim) and some of the suggestions for some disorders either don’t apply to me, or contradict BSD. But I’m going to try to: cut out processed pork (for me and for the kids) - I was already trying this anyway; cut out sweetener in my coffee (should have done this anyway) and take apple cider vinegar each day. This being a few things I could do and incorporate into a long term maintenance plan, alongside keeping the carbs low and running.

Oblomov18 · 23/05/2018 19:02

Bloody hell Amazing, what IS that? It looks scrummy.

ChocEggNoThanks · 23/05/2018 19:59

Hmmm. I've just 'remembered' a few things I've eaten over the past few days and 'forgot' to put into MFP. When I see it there in black and white I am pretty much doing 5:2 on 800 cal fast days. No wonder I have stalled. Even my good days are 900-1000 cals. Sunday was 2000 and Saturday was 1700. Even Monday was about 1300. So I think I need to either get my head back into place and really do it properly OR move to the 5:2 or 4:3 BSD but be really strict on fast days. I hadn't realised how the short cuts were already slipping in at week 5.

This weekend will be difficult too but I think from Monday I need to have at least 4 8-900 calorie days next week. Even if that means eating the same thing 4 nights straight! I am 2lbs from dropping down a big number on the scales and if I can crack it I know it will motivate me to keep going.

Heismyopendoor · 23/05/2018 20:02

Amazing, that looks so nice!

Today has been another good day for me. I still have some calories left so will have a little supper when I get home from the kids activities. Like 10pm pretty much. Oh well lol.

Scales say I am down 5lbs this week already. Not sure if I believe them but will weigh again toward some the end of the week. Saturday morning probably.

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 23/05/2018 20:17

Oblomov- it was 200g cauliflower rice (made fresh because it goes horrible so quickly) with 100g fresh salmon, 70g mushrooms and 6 asparagus spears. Added a little salt, pepper and turmeric. Huge bowlful - I took the photo halfway through eating it because I was seriously HANGRY by that point Grin
I had strawberries and raspberries for pudding. Unbelievably it all came in at 274 calories!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 23/05/2018 20:19

Choc oh I’ve done that so many times! The ‘over eating’ is probably a sign that your visceral fat is going, maybe even gone. Apparently according to Michael our bodies naturally fight to refill our fat reserves when we burn them off, by increasing our appetites. It takes a few weeks to accept our ‘new’ body fat levels. I’ve had weeks where my appetite is do voracious I just cannot keep out of the kitchen.

We had hunters chicken for dinner, just chicken breast wrapped in bacon with cheese and a tsp bbq sauce. I had mind with salad. Very, very nice. Currently sitting on the bathroom floor while I colour my hair, planning my food for tomorrow as I could really do with another 800-900 day as well!

Bear that's reassuring and makes a lot of sense - I am really craving high fat dairy so yoghurt and cheese especially. And my trousers are all falling down so I keep having to hoik my non-judgey pants Wink So I must persevere! Back to the Quorn steaks and broccoli and cauliflower cheese of the first weeks!

On a side note thanks to whoever recommended the Tesco bags of frozen cauli rice. They are brilliant for firing in the microwave with a ready made curry.

Snowglobes · 24/05/2018 06:15

Morning all,
Frozen cauliflower rice from Tesco was me choc albeit I find it goes a bit mushy in the microwave. How are you cooking it?
Good look with interviews primal & turnip!
Had a few proseccos last night. So waaaay over my 800 cals. Weight down again though and like choc & turnip just 2lbs away from a stone! So now 11.05. Which is also my halfway point! Really really need to plan BEFORE I eat! And drink!! Eating actually ok but I need to stay away from booze!
Hope the hair colour looks lovely bear. Hope we all have a good day.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 24/05/2018 06:31

Weighed in at 10.8, which is my lowest yet. That’s despite having rather a lot of calories yesterday. My body must be in shock from working! I miss my boy now though, it’s not the same only seeing him at night- it makes me realise I should be more appreciative of being at home with him usually.

Today: working again, with a 2 hour break in the middle. I’ve made a chicken tikka salad to take. I must remember to drink during the day, I’ve had headaches every evening which I think must be dehydration as I usually drink gallons. It’s cooler here today and I finish at 2.30 so I am going to go for a run this afternoon rather than try to cram it in. It’s a big day for me, running wise, because my current total is 496km this year- today’s run will be my 500th km!! My target was 1000 in the year so I’m well on track to smash that!

Anyone else on holiday next week? I try to have a bit of a social media holiday too so I might not be around much, but I’ll be with you all in spirit!

Have decided to start on Tuesday , working all weekend and have a couple of birthdays over the weekend too. Going to go shopping on Tuesday to buy food for the week and also some scales. Am going to ask a colleague to take a photo of me in my hideously unflattering uniform and will get them to do the same in 8 weeks., at the moment I am bursting the seams, so hopefully every single llb loss will be noticeable Smile

Will also measure my waist , hips and bust. I am sort of round with normal arms and legs and not too many chins Wink

DandelionAndBedrock · 24/05/2018 07:26

Yup, I’m off work next week. Have planned something every day to keep me busy and stop me from snacking. Not sure a comedy night in the pub was the best plan though!

Weighed in today at dead on 13 stone, which makes it a slow week so far but 2st 1lb down in the 6 weeks I’ve been on BSD. Quinoa and chicken salad for lunch, and mustard garlic prawns for dinner.

Meeting a friend tonight for a drink - haven’t seen him since Christmas so hoping he sees a difference.

frumpety · 24/05/2018 07:48

Thursday/Friday will be my tricky days as going away for a night , hotel breakfast on the Friday morning , but will go large on the mushrooms, tomatoes and eggs and avoid the toast and maybe skip lunch. Will make sure I take loads of water with us too.

frumpety · 24/05/2018 07:51

I am also going to record everything I eat and drink over the next 4 days and work out the calorie intake , I am prepared to be shocked, but hoping it will also make me mindful of what I am eating and drinking, I already know it is too much Blush

veryveryquietly · 24/05/2018 09:00

Still hovering, still, in the same 2 lb range that I have been for last 2+ weeks, maybe longer (can't bear to check MFP to find out). About to fling stuff in suitcase and head off for long city weekend. Hopefully all the walking planned will make up for any indulgences. Then it's back to the gym and serious sticking to plan. I still have a long way to go, and while I'm glad to have not gained any back, I want to dump more of this lard.

Have a lovely bank holiday weekend, all! And above all be nice to yourselves!
