NYMT/BYMT 2024!

Seeing as NYMT have announced their shows, it feels like a good time to start a thread for anyone with DC planning on auditioning for 2024 for either NYMT or BYMT - as performers or musicians, or as assistant creatives. Please come and say hi and tell us a bit about your DC. There are lots of experienced parents of DC who have been part of both organisations, and these threads are always genuinely supportive and helpful.
I'll invite some previous thread participants below - please come and say hi!

Mine is in rehearsals in Canterbury and loving life - I think it’s just their absolute favourite place to be. Like coming home, even when the location changes.

It took over two days to even get any contact - where as the first year (2021) it was a video call every night. Just too busy having fun! I had tracked them there though so I knew all was well - and has seen happy faces in the insta stories.

On their night off they put on lots of different workshops for them to choose between - mine had chosen fight choreography! Such great opportunities for them all. Others did puppetry, acting through song, industry panel etc

Come and see Catastrophe Bay people!!

Break a leg to the Into the Woods NYMT company, opening today. Hearing great things about it!

Good luck Into The Woods cast!!!

As you know ds didn't apply for NYMT this year but he's had a couple of professional opportunities this summer and in the process keeps meeting ex NYMTers. He's also planning on using some for one of his own projects next year.

nearlyhomealone · 09/08/2024 11:55

Wishing the Into the Woods cast a great run!
DS is performing at Edinburgh fringe with school this year so are missing all the NYMT fun. 😣

LibbyRuncie · 10/08/2024 10:40

Into the woods folk/parents etc! … planning for DD for Monday at youth hostel! Does anyone know is there a kettle and microwave they can use? Mindful they have to feed themselves and won’t have much time and probably won’t be allowed to stray too far!

want tips for show week please!?

Biscuitsneeded · 10/08/2024 14:22

WOW Wow wow - Into the Woods was just incredible last night. So much talent in cast and band. Huge congrats to any DC from this thread. I loved Act 2 in particular - genuinely very moving.
@LibbyRuncie I can't answer about the youth hostel facilities, but whenever DS has done a London residential they have had a hearty breakfast at the accommodation and then gone to the theatre for pretty much the whole day. There's a Pret and a Sainsburys very near the theatre, and pastoral will make sure they get adequate breaks, and take the younger ones to get food, don't worry. The kids absolutely love it. You probably just need to send a packed lunch with the DC on the first day if they are arriving around lunchtime.
Hearing good things about Catastrophe Bay - looking forward to seeing it!

ITW... still processing!! Insanely talented cast, very inventive use of a limited space. Looking forward to seeing it again tomorrow! And have booked tickets for CB next week too. NYMT addiction in full force...

Operasingerkath · 10/08/2024 16:10

So pleased ITW is going well! Sad we couldn’t see it, and unfortunately can’t make Cat Bay either, but we are going to Our House. My DS in the meantime has been workshopping Lightning Boy in Canterbury. After being a little disappointed he didn’t get one of the full shows this year, he has had the best time-amazing experience from start to finish! He’s made loads of new friends and thoroughly enjoyed the process of the workshop, especially working with the writers and creatives so closely. Keeping fingers crossed it makes it for a full show next year! We loved the sections we got to see at the showcase. All the best to the all the casts for their shows in the next few weeks.

@Operasingerkath This is lovely to hear. Our young friend who who also did the Lightning Boy workshop said exactly the same - she loved it all. Hope your DS will be back at auditions next year!

He absolutely will be if we can possibly manage it!

DMEAmum · 10/08/2024 17:58

Wow…. How incredible was Into The Woods?! We managed to get tickets for Friday, then stayed over in London before dropping DS off in Canterbury for Our House rehearsals today. ITW has definitely set the standard for NYMT 2024 productions. CB and OH have a lot to live up to!!!

Kittykat57 · 10/08/2024 18:21

I simply loved Into the Woods last night and am back again today. My DS is going to be on a big come down next week. So much talent on that stage!

With regard to accommodation, there is zero time in between shows and rehearsals. They have time to pop to Sainsbury's or Pret but no time for anything hot. There is a good breakfast in the morning and I would suggest bringing some high energy snacks for their room. I am hoping to get tickets for Cat bay.

LibbyRuncie · 10/08/2024 18:56

Okey dokey! Won’t waste space on pot noodles and such then?! Flapjacks etc it is then! I imagine deliveroo will be summoned a few times!

LibbyRuncie · 10/08/2024 19:08

Can I ask a practical question for cat B please? They finish after the sat night performance… we have literally got to drive back to Derbyshire straight after so looking for parking but does anyone know what the likely finish time will be please?

ITW finished at around 10:30, but I'd allow yourself plenty of time after the final show for collecting their stuff and tearful goodbyes!

There are quite a few parking spaces nearby through the JustPark app

LibbyRuncie · 10/08/2024 20:00

Change of plan! Now looking for a hotel! It’s just going to be tooooo late to drive back! 🤦‍♀️

Mumster40 · 10/08/2024 20:25

Congratulations to everyone in ITTW! Was blown away by how brilliant everyone was! LOVED it x

Mcmumager · 10/08/2024 22:06

We are Derbyshire too @LibbyRuncie but have dc in ‘our house’. Not sure how it works in London but in Leicester last year there was also a bit of a get together afterwards on the last night then the older ones went clubbing! No idea what happens in London!

Biscuitsneeded · 11/08/2024 08:00

There's not usually any sort of 'do' because people have to get home or to hotels and it would also be a bit of a safeguarding nightmare for NYMT! However the over 18s often do go on to a pub or club, but as far as the little ones are concerned, it's a case of sign out, grab suitcase and say goodbyes. Usually lots of tears so you'll need to remind them they can hopefully see their cast mates at the Christmas concert (no news about that yet as far as I know).

Comefromaway · 11/08/2024 08:57

I think Leicester might have been a bit different because they’d all been staying at the Premier Inn all week so several parents booked an extra night.

my son went clubbing and pretty much pulled an all nighter. He just about made breakfast.

Mcmumager · 12/08/2024 16:40

Does anyone have any recommendations for nice pre show dinner next to Southwark elephant please?

Biscuitsneeded · 12/08/2024 20:15

Right by the theatre there's not much except for a Pret and a Sainsburys. But near the Thames link station (not the tube) there seemed to be a new development with restaurants etc. Maybe see what Google maps brings up?. Afraid I haven't investigated myself.

There's a really good pizza place across the road, it's called Theo's.

LibbyRuncie · 12/08/2024 20:33

We’re going to go to mercato matropolitano which is street food hall and bars! 13 mins from theatre

Kittykat57 · 12/08/2024 20:37

Mercato metropolitan is just past the other Southwark playhouse theatre. It's a great venue with so much choice of
Food and drink. Perfect in this weather.
It reminded me of a box park .
