NYMT/BYMT 2024!

Seeing as NYMT have announced their shows, it feels like a good time to start a thread for anyone with DC planning on auditioning for 2024 for either NYMT or BYMT - as performers or musicians, or as assistant creatives. Please come and say hi and tell us a bit about your DC. There are lots of experienced parents of DC who have been part of both organisations, and these threads are always genuinely supportive and helpful.
I'll invite some previous thread participants below - please come and say hi!

@Needanadultgapyear thanks so much for that information. It's good to know.. I would imagine she would prefer the day out with the gang as opposed to hanging out with me 😂 she will have a phone with her to contact us either way.. although it will be a waste for me to spend the 2 weeks in London on the off chance she needs me.. so hard to know what to do 🙈

yodaforpresident · 22/05/2024 12:11

@MxPickles yes, my DD did, though the sore throat struck again as usual!

yodaforpresident · 22/05/2024 12:11

@Mumster40 I'm so sorry to hear that, it really is such a long wait so I can understand your DC's decision. I'm sure we will all be back in the waiting room in January. Hope that you all have a wonderful time on your breaks away.

wonderfullife123 · 22/05/2024 15:30

Oh no @Mumster40 that's so so frustrating! 5 rounds seems too much to me how very stressful.

allhailthebrain · 22/05/2024 15:41

Sorry to hear that @Mumster40 - it sounds a never ending emotional roller coaster! NYMT may be tough but at least it’s over quickly…

glad she has other things to enjoy this summer though, that’s what matters.

Excuse me while I disappear back into the world of SATs and GCSEs. Ugh. Didn’t see that clash coming!!

Biscuitsneeded · 22/05/2024 18:46

@Mumster40 I feel for you and your very very talented DC. Keep them ticking over with school shows or local am dram - I bet they will be back at NYMT next year and will knock their socks off. I for one will be waiting for your news.

It's a no for us too.

Grumblema · 22/05/2024 21:48

My granddaughter is in

yodaforpresident · 22/05/2024 23:35

It’s a yes for DD for the gala.

ChocolateNowPlease86 · 26/07/2024 17:59

I hope everyone’s having a lovely summer!

Just reposting this from a different thread…

Does anyone have a DC on the Royal Academy of Music’s Junior Academy Musical Theatre course?

DD’s classically trained singing teacher has suggested DD should apply, but I can’t see that it would be any better than the weekend courses at ArtsEd or West End Musical Theatre, and those courses would provide dance training as well as singing and drama.

It would be different if the RAM course provided an academic angle, eg joining with the other Junior Academy pupils for composition, conducting, improvisation and general musicianship training, which would help with her Music GCSE and A level and potentially open the door to a traditional Music degree, with all the wider career options that could lead to, including composing for musical theatre or being a musical director, rather than just the small chance of perhaps a maximum of 10 years on stage (for a female musical theatre actor) following a vocational performing arts degree.

Any advice from other families with DCs already on the course?

Biscuitsneeded · 26/07/2024 21:59

@Chocolatenowplease I'm sorry, I can't really help with your question, although I can't imagine the RAM course wouldn't be excellent. Maybe it depends on what your DD wants it for - I think everyone on this thread would acknowledge that being a female MT performer (or even a male one!) is a pretty precarious career choice, but she might just love doing the course for its own sake? And if she's a singer first and foremost, yes she might benefit from doing more dance with WEMT or WEK or Stagebox etc, but then again she might not get the technical voice training she'd get at RAM. Actor-singers might have more longevity than dancers, too...
Sorry not to be able to help more, but thank you for reanimating this thread on the eve of the NYMT summer season! You've reminded me that I wanted to wish all show participants, workshoppers and course students the very best time!

Thanks, Biscuits!

My concern is that only a fraction of the teenagers on the MT pathway will make it to drama school/post grad MT diploma, even then only a tiny fraction of the talented performers on those courses will subsequently make it to the West End stage and, particularly for the young women, their performing careers will be very short.

In view of this, shouldn’t a responsible provider, like the Royal Academy of Music, offer an “all round” musical education for the Junior Academy MT kids, just like they do for the classical music stream? This could help the MT kids ace their Music GCSE and A level, opening the door to an academic Music degree, which could be followed by a post grad MT diploma for those still aiming for the bright lights of the West End.

Whilst every teenager is encouraged to “follow their dream”, and most are convinced they’ll be in the tiny group who eventually “make it”, an academic Music degree would offer a broader range of future career options (MT composer or musical director, schoolteacher, lawyer, accountant) when they finally jump off the MT carousel, whether in their 20s or later.

Break a leg to all those performing with NYMT/BYMT over the next few weeks! DD is on one of the BYMT courses, but I can’t say which or I’ll risk outing myself!

yodaforpresident · 02/08/2024 13:56

Break a leg to all the DC in their BYMT and NYMT shows over the next few weeks. I believe that All Growed Up starts today which I would very much liked to have seen.

sunflowerdaisyrose · 04/08/2024 20:06

I've just been looking up info on these for my daughter (though not sure we can afford it even if she got in!). Can see NYMT is from age 10 but BYMT is from 11. My daughter is 11 in March - so would be 10 for auditions, is she too young still for 2025? Thanks!

Biscuitsneeded · 05/08/2024 07:57

@sunflowerdaisyrose Not at all too young. My son was 10 when he auditioned for NYMT for the first time, and they need a range of ages. I would book an audition when they open in the Autumn and see what happens.. There are bursaries available for those in genuine need.

Also feels like a good time to wish all NYMT and BYMT participants the very best for an amazing time and successful shows and residentials. How are all the DC getting on? Hope everyone is happy - Break a leg to all.

My granddaughter is having a whale of a time rehearsing with the BYMT as I write. She was lucky enough to be in the Gala too, and that kicked off a summer full of rehearsals for her, school shows then BYMT now and NYMT to follow at the end of the month. It is a wonderful time of opportunities for her, and she comes back buzzing every time, new friends and learning so much, so quickly. We are the frazzled ones with all the organising and transporting pressures, but it's so worth it.
I hope everyone else's DC are having an equally amazing time. I'm sure they are.

Biscuitsneeded · 05/08/2024 13:51

Wow @Grumblema , that sounds like a very busy summer for your granddaughter. Which BYMT and NYMT shows is she doing? Lucky kid!

My DS has had a wonderful time on the NYMT residentials . The pastoral care has been superb. Into the woods kicks off on Friday! 😊

She's just finished rehearsals for Crescendo (NYMT) and started Wonderland in Alice rehearsals (BYMT) on Sunday. It was an awful mad rush from Canterbury to Wakefield on Saturday evening. We will NOT let her do two shows so close together again. She might love it, but it wears her mum (she has ME/CFS) out completely. The Crescendo showcase isn't until the very end of August, but even so.....

I'm very excited to see Into the Woods. And all 5 performances are sold out so I'm glad I got my ticket! Really glad to hear your DS had a wonderful time, especially as I think it's his first time, isn't it? Pastoral at NYMT are a wonderful team. Experienced, fun, kind, professional. It's so important and they get it just right.

I think mum and grandma definitely earned their brownie points there. Lucky that all the timings worked (just) - what a summer for your GDD! I hope she enjoyed her Crescendo residential.

My DD is at Catastrophe Bay rehearsals in Canterbury now and looooving it!!! She is one of the youngest at 13 but the cast are wonderful and so lovely and pastoral team are great!!! Movie night last night and went out for Taco Bell this evening! She is loving her experience! This is her first time in NYMT! Def got the bug haven’t even booked a holiday for next year on rare chance that she gets in again next year (managing her expectations on this!!! Lottery chances I think!)

Grumblema · 05/08/2024 21:00

She loved it. She always does! And Canterbury is such a beautiful place. She, and both her mum and myself wanted very much to go to 'Into the Woods', but unfortunately we won't be able to this time round. Have a lovely time yourself though. I hear it's going to be very good indeed.
