Ok, I know we technically haven't finished 2022 yet as there is still the Christmas Concert for some (my ds is not taking part due to his conservatoire concert) but NYMT have released details of their 2023 season & auditions here

Delurking- my DD has been recalled for the showcase and the email says she also will be considered for the workshop. Gutting to realise that the performance for the showcase classes with a music tour she booked on to do at school. I thought I'd checked all the dates but clearly not thoroughly enough.Didn't expect her to get a recall tbh. Aaargh! Good luck all.

minimits · 27/01/2023 14:59

I’m sorry manicmumsday, really hope your DS is ok. We know how much the no’s hurt! DS recalled for Kiss Me Kate and Merrily.

manicmumsday · 27/01/2023 15:06

Thanks @minimits, that’s kind. He’s disappointed but he’ll be ok. He’s aware that the mid teens are tricky. He’s too big to be cast as a child but not ready to compete with the older teens. So it was a longshot.

Congratulations to your DS!

Biscuitsneeded · 27/01/2023 15:28

@manicmumsday I'm sorry to hear that. Mid teens are v tricky, especially for boys. Hope he's OK and will want to try again another time.

Biscuitsneeded · 27/01/2023 15:30

@wonderfullife123 well done to your DD. Sorry to hear about the dates clash, though. I hope you can resolve it all somehow.

Biscuitsneeded · 27/01/2023 15:32

DS is recalled for Armchair and Merrily. So yes, they are recalling for Merrily! He has a few friends also recalled for it too.

manicmumsday · 27/01/2023 15:34

Congratulations to your DS, @Biscuitsneeded . Lovely to hear of other kids’ successes.

minimits · 27/01/2023 15:36

@wonderfullife123 congratulations, hope you can work it out x

That’s brilliant news! X

Anyone know how big young ones are treated? DS has only just turned 12 (year 7) but could easily pass for 14/15. He's taller than me! His strength is his singing. Range (tenor to soprano), tone and vibrato. He's an all-rounder but hasn't decided what he wants to do. Just that since he was 2 all he's wanted to do was be some sort of singer. Does anyone know of any opera opportunities for young people he can explore? He has tremendous power in his voice. We're trying to stay away from pop etc due to the risk of any kind of fame (he's very good looking) but he can sing pretty much anything and sounds several years older than he is.

You say mid-teens can be tricky. Would someone that looks mid-teen be judged by the same criteria as those who actually are mid-teen?

Auditioning for both BYMT and NYMT in February.

Biscuitsneeded · 27/01/2023 19:27

@Savannah5 Interesting question. They will probably judge your son as he presents. When I say mid- teens are tricky for boys, I mean that in most cases that's when voices break. If your son's voice has settled already and he could pass as a 14 or 15 year old, I'm sure they would cast him accordingly. Good luck to him!

wonderfullife123 · 27/01/2023 19:30

Thank you @minimits @Biscuitsneeded think I have a plan -phew . Well.done to your DC and sorry to those who haven't had good news this time. Always blows me away the courage of kids putting themselves out there for these things. Hugely impressive.

Savannah5 · 27/01/2023 19:30

Lol his voice is nowhere near breaking. He's just a giant with a boy voice 😂(although he can do tenor he is more comfortable with soprano and can sing higher than many girls)

Savannah5 · 27/01/2023 20:09

I suppose what I'm trying to ascertain is whether his size will work against him. For his age he's got an amazing voice and is good at acting and dancing too, but not amazing. As he presents as older he's still good but so are many others at an older age.

I got one answer that kind of said "yes" but his voice hasn't broken so he's not quite the same.

It's so difficult to wait for the outcome. Pass the 🍷

MxPickles · 27/01/2023 20:12

Hi all been lurking on the thread and found it very helpful - it is DD's (12/yr 7) first audition in Manchester tomorrow.

Its so good to see that there have been lots of recalls already. I was wondering - I know the dates for recalls are 18/19th Feb, but is there any pattern as to what shows are being recalled on which date?

Thanks

minimits · 27/01/2023 20:19

@wonderfullife123 glad you have a plan!
@Savannah5 There will be a whole mix of kids who look older/younger and at the end of the day they will cast who they feel is right for the role, last year DS played a part which the year before had been played by someone 3 years older. All he can do is do his best and see what happens! The audition days for BYMT and NYMT are an amazing experience whatever the outcome and DS has always come away feeling he has learnt something whatever the outcome.
@MxPickles both days will have all the shows if that makes sense!

minimits · 27/01/2023 20:23

@MxPickles good luck for tomorrow!

MxPickles · 27/01/2023 20:23

@minimits Thank you :)

Alakazam8 · 27/01/2023 20:53

@MxPickles if it helps further you can indicate if you can’t do one of the recall days. I’m going to have to do that of dd gets through this year. There’s a few of us on here with younger dd’s going to Manchester tomorrow (waves)

Savannah5 · 27/01/2023 21:02

@minimits thank you :)

@MxPickles good luck 🤞

Mcmumager · 27/01/2023 22:45

Congratulations to all those with good news and hugs to those who didn’t get the news they’d hoped for. I’ve been in both camps and know it’s tough.

So now recalls for merrily- is there a pattern do we think of the types/ages recalled for each show? Merrily mainly older , KMK mainly older & dancers, armchair younger plus few older?

Good luck to those auditioning this weekend!

Biscuitsneeded · 27/01/2023 23:20

@Savannah5 , sorry I misunderstood you. No, the great thing about NYMT is they take all shapes and sizes and provide something in the gap where you're no longer a cute little moppet but also not yet an adult. I think it's harder for teen boys than for 10 year olds or 18 year olds, because of voice change, but it's harder for teen girls because there's so much competition from other teen girls. But with several shows and roles on offer there are lots of possibilities. I hope your DS enjoys the audition.

Biscuitsneeded · 27/01/2023 23:22

Merrily recalls have tended to be the older end of the age range, but I do know a 10 year old girl with a Merrily recall, so not exclusively so!

Biscuitsneeded · 27/01/2023 23:40

@Montimom and @Alakazam8 Good luck to your DDs tomorrow. Hope they have a great time!

Alakazam8 · 28/01/2023 02:26

I think there are young teens in Merrily at the end so might explain the young recalls for that. I’m a bit surprised at Armchair although think there are adult roles in that so again makes sense.
@Savannah5 i sort of think that the showcase is built around the kids themselves a bit and can suit (for example) mid teens and younger kids so there really is something for everyone.@biscuits thank you, as long as she enjoys the day I’m happy 😃
