Grade 5 theory

Just thought I'd start a thread for all those taking grade 5 theory next week.
I've taught DS for it, as I've taken my own pupils through it previously, but it's been surprisingly hard work - maybe because we've tried to do a crash course (I usually spend a couple of terms of more when teaching pupils), or maybe just because teaching your own child is just harder!
He's capable of doing ok, but massively under-practised so I'm worried he'll make silly mistakes, and his actual note writing is scruffy. We haven't looked at terms, other than those he already knows, and certainly no German ones!

Anyone else looking forward to it being over???

Hi Horseymum.

Not sure if this will help.

So sorry to hear your news, take care of yourself. Thanks

horseymum · 09/11/2018 17:11

Thanks, will investigate that later, looks like it might be useful.

MrsPatmore · 09/11/2018 17:21

Sorry to hear your news Floot. Ds took his Grade 5 earlier in the year and I was so glad to get it out of the way. He worked quite intensively on it for an academic year - practically half an hour every night but found it a bit boring. One piece of advice is to stay until the end, checking and re-checking. Only ds and another child stayed the full time - both got high distinctions! The

Trumpetboysmum · 09/11/2018 17:25

I also vote for my music theory - really useful website and revision materials

ILovePandas · 09/11/2018 19:08

Another recommendation for my music theory website and also working through the Abrsm music theory practice papers - you can find 2 free ones plus the answers on the website and then we bought a book with 4 more practice papers

Floottoot · 10/11/2018 17:43

Thanks, horseymum, Romany and MrsPatmore.

Another vote for my music theory website. Really good ( a shame I didn't find it sooner). We also used the All in One book ( I think that's what it's called), the Blitz grade 5 book and Take Grade 5 book ( although it was a bit scant, I thought, but maybe there's a newer versus n for the new style exam?)

Does anyone know when the results are out? The exam entry confirmation letter said 4 weeks in one part of the letter, but 6 weeks further down.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 28/11/2018 12:21

(I've NC'd since the OP)

ThreeAndUs · 28/11/2018 13:36

ABRSM just brought out an app Music Theory Works and it is brilliant, my son usedbit to revise for the exam this time. Can't recommend it highly enough.

MeltingWax · 28/11/2018 15:45

I think it will be next Tuesday - the last three sessions, results have come out 4 weeks to the day after the exam (except for when the exam was on a Saturday).

Trumpetboysmum · 28/11/2018 16:07

I thought that too

Alsoplayspiccolo · 28/11/2018 21:45

I hope you're right - not sure I could cope with theory results, NCO results and piano exam results all in the same week. 😮

Trumpetboysmum · 28/11/2018 22:51

No that would be too much . Ds told me he was more worried about this than the NCO result - I think it’s because he never wants to look at a grade 5 theory book again !!

Alsoplayspiccolo · 03/12/2018 11:41

Anyone getting nervous about the possibility of getting results tomorrow?
DS has asked periodically when he's going to hear, but then seems to forget all about it for a few days. I'm a bit worried, because he thinks the theory went the best of the 3 exams/audition he's done this term, so if he's right, it's a bit of a shame that that's the result he'll get first....it'll be downhill all the way from there!!

MeltingWax · 03/12/2018 13:16

Yes - me!

DS has asked from time to time about the results, I have just been vague and have said we should hear some time before Christmas. DD hasn't really asked about it.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 03/12/2018 19:11

Someone's commented on an ABRSM Facebook post, regarding still waiting for theory results, and the ABRSM response was that they usually take about 4 weeks, and to watch this (FB) space.

MeltingWax · 03/12/2018 19:52

Tomorrow, innit!

Alsoplayspiccolo · 03/12/2018 20:36

I really hope so!

4strings · 03/12/2018 23:06

Not Grade 5, but we’re waiting for Grade 3 theory (hope no-one minds an interloper!). Dd asks me on the hour. Pleeease let it be soon!

Alsoplayspiccolo · 04/12/2018 08:47

Interlopers absolutely welcomed, 4strings! We're all in the same state of suspense!
Fingers crossed all minis get fantastic marks for all their hard work.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 04/12/2018 11:56

Just checked online ( no email) and RESULTS ARE IN!!!

DS just missed a distinction - 88 marks.
Phew!!!!

4strings · 04/12/2018 12:10

Yeah a high merit for dd!!!

Alsoplayspiccolo · 04/12/2018 12:11

Congratulations to mini4strings!

Trumpetboysmum · 04/12/2018 12:21

Well done everyone Smile
Ds got 90 so a distinction ( just!!)
Not quite sure how he managed that - must have been my excellent ( and endlessly patient) teaching Wink

Alsoplayspiccolo · 04/12/2018 12:37

Fantastic result, Trumpet! And b-r-e-a-t-h-e..... 😀
