Grade 5 theory

Floottoot · 31/10/2018 10:19

Just thought I'd start a thread for all those taking grade 5 theory next week.
I've taught DS for it, as I've taken my own pupils through it previously, but it's been surprisingly hard work - maybe because we've tried to do a crash course (I usually spend a couple of terms of more when teaching pupils), or maybe just because teaching your own child is just harder!
He's capable of doing ok, but massively under-practised so I'm worried he'll make silly mistakes, and his actual note writing is scruffy. We haven't looked at terms, other than those he already knows, and certainly no German ones!

Anyone else looking forward to it being over???

Good luck to minis Melting, ILovePandas, Trumpet, and ja9r!

Good luck everyone!

I am not in the best of moods. DP took DD to the accompanist this evening for her final practice before her recorder exam on Thursday. He said she was 'yawning quite a lot' on the way there so they stopped in Costa on the way and he gave her coffee Hmm. Coffee for an 11-yr-old an hour before bedtime the night before an exam. DD is still awake now and to say that I am thoroughly fed-up would be the understatement of the year Angry.

Floottoot · 05/11/2018 23:01

Oh no!
Hopefully, she'll get through tomorrow on adrenaline, if nothing else.

Oh no melting
Good luck all for tomorrow Smile

Witchesbritches · 05/11/2018 23:50

Melting, patio is up, hole is dug...no jury would convict you.

I hope you chose a good selection of colourful words to share with him.

DC (13) is FAR more chilled about it than I am. It’s just as well she ‘gets it’ because I can’t help her At All.

I’m really looking forward to waiting in the car for 2 hours 🙄

ILovePandas · 06/11/2018 05:39

Good luck everyone. Will be glad when it’s over. Last minute nerves seem to have set for DD but this always happens before music practicals so will approach with the same positive mind, positive outcome mantra!
Melting hope your DD got some sleep

Trumpetboysmum · 06/11/2018 06:23

Ds isn’t stressed AT ALL Hmm not sure if he should be !! No I’m not looking forward to waiting in the car either . Unfortunately for me the exam is really quite close to where he rehearses for brass band ( we’ll its not but it’s only a bit of a detour home !?!) so after the exam he’s going to that - so more sitting in the car for me ( must remember my book!!) though I doubt he will be much more than an hour ( I’ve told him I don’t want to see him before the hour though Grin)

MeltingWax · 06/11/2018 19:33

Well, I eventually fell asleep myself last night at about half past midnight and DD was still awake at that point. DP and I are barely speaking. At one point during the night when it seemed as though she was going to be awake all night, I thought about re-entering her for the next session. But we have used up all our past papers and I couldn't see how we could keep the momentum going until March.

Anyway, it's done now, the place was a bit of a pain for us to travel to. I gave both the DCs strict instructions not to leave before 6pm. DS (who was sitting Grade 4) came out on the dot of 6 and DD a couple of minutes later. We know she definitely got one of the German words wrong. But she seemed cheerful enough and came out saying 'right, that's it now then, until Grade 6'...! Hope everyone found it ok...Star for all the DCs and Wine for the rest of us.

Trumpetboysmum · 06/11/2018 19:44

Glad it went ok melting - hope you all get some sleep tonight
Ds thought it went ok - so we’ll see - I’m now at brass band this is a very long day !!
Lovely to meet you today panda Smile

ILovePandas · 06/11/2018 20:05

Sounding positive all round so far. DD thought it went ok too and came out at 6:30pm and said she triple checked everything so fingers crossed
melting Wine
trumpet lovely to meet you too and definitely beat sitting in the car!

Trumpetboysmum · 06/11/2018 20:27

I thought it was very funny that they all came out together !! - they must have all looked up and decided it was ok to leave because the others were !! Ds promises me he checked his paper many times !!

Floottoot · 07/11/2018 15:18

Sorry for not returning to the thread sooner.
I dropped DS off at the exam centre and was working my way back through city rush hour traffic when I got a phone call with the worst family news.

Really glad to hear that all DCs seem to have found the paper ok. DS thinks he might have done quite well. He stayed in until 6.30pm, as instructed, and assures me he double and triple checked his answers. I'm confident he'll have passed, so fingers crossed, that's it, done.

ILovePandas · 07/11/2018 20:25

Oh no floot Flowers
Glad your DS felt it went well

Floottoot · 07/11/2018 21:49

Thank you for being so lovely.
I think I posted a few weeks back that my sister has been diagnosed with cancer. We were told yesterday that there's nothing more they can do for her, so she's going home to spend her last few weeks with her husband and children. It's only been three months since she was diagnosed, and the diagnosis came out of the blue.

Floot I’m so very sorry to hear about your sister 💐. Do they live near you?

...it puts stuff like kids music exams into perspective doesn’t it.

Much love to you all.

Trumpetboysmum · 08/11/2018 06:28

Oh floot I am so sorry . Much love to all of you Flowers

Floottoot · 08/11/2018 07:37

Thank you.
You're right, Witches - the relief I was looking forward to feeling after he'd sat the exam never came. He's got his first piano exam in a couple of weeks and I've lost the motivation to keep him going for that too.

My sister and her family live 150 miles away. I asked my BiL whether she wanted to see people, but she doesn't, so I'm here in a sort of limbo.

I am so sorry floot. That's very sad news. Take care of yourselves Flowers.

Trumpetboysmum · 08/11/2018 14:44

Oh gosh floot so difficult especially as you are so far away Flowers

Lotsofmilkonesugar · 08/11/2018 14:53

Very sorry to hear your sad news floot 💐 the distance must make it even more difficult. Look after yourself

horseymum · 09/11/2018 15:00

Any tips for home teaching this? Fairly musical myself but forgotten lots! We have done the grade 1 and 2 Abrsm books but they seem quite dull so got the blitz books 4 and 5, figured we could catch up on grade 3 stuff. Do you just plough through the books? Lessons are not long enough to include too much although oboe teacher makes her work out scales rather than using a book so that bit should be ok. He is happy to leave the theory to me! ( Bit risky!) Thought we would start after piano exam in a couple of weeks. No pressure as not doing grade 5 oboe till spring, so won't need to have passed theory for ages.any website s or games to help?

horseymum · 09/11/2018 15:02

Sorry for just barging into a discussion at a sensitive time. Hadn't taken the time to read previous messages. Take care floot.
