Grade 5 theory

Floottoot · 31/10/2018 10:19

Just thought I'd start a thread for all those taking grade 5 theory next week.
I've taught DS for it, as I've taken my own pupils through it previously, but it's been surprisingly hard work - maybe because we've tried to do a crash course (I usually spend a couple of terms of more when teaching pupils), or maybe just because teaching your own child is just harder!
He's capable of doing ok, but massively under-practised so I'm worried he'll make silly mistakes, and his actual note writing is scruffy. We haven't looked at terms, other than those he already knows, and certainly no German ones!

Anyone else looking forward to it being over???

Well done Trumpet!
So relieved that ours passed too, scoring 98 and 87 (particularly relieved with 87 as DD is 9 and it felt a risky entry!)
Hope everyone else is pleased with results.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 04/12/2018 18:29

Those are seriously good results, fourkangaroos! Bravo to your DCs!! Both grade 5?

ILovePandas · 04/12/2018 18:48

just got the news DD got 83 a merit! Super happy for DD and she is both shocked and thrilled. Phew Grin
Well done to everyone’s DC - good news for all

MeltingWax · 04/12/2018 18:48

Well done to everyone for a fab set of results!

Thank you for alerting us to the availability of results piccolo - I was rushing in between meetings but I could go online quickly to check my phone in the loo!

DD had 90 in her Grade 5 & DS had 87 in Grade 4. I am chuffed to bits, DD is happy but DS is a bit disappointed. Ridiculous. Hmm

Alsoplayspiccolo · 04/12/2018 18:59

Well done, Panda and Melting! More fabulous results!
Melting, DS is also disappointed - he says he wanted a distinction, and clearly hasn't done as well as he thought he had.
Such a shame that they can only focus on the bit they didn't quite manage, instead of the 80+% they did!

MeltingWax · 04/12/2018 19:07

Yes, I am reminding DS that he got 40 something percent in one of the practice past papers he did in the weeks leading up to the exam. And if someone had told him then that he would have ended up with a score of 87 in the actual exam, he would have been delighted!

ILovePandas · 04/12/2018 19:26

Melting DC can be so hard on themselves sometimes, they are both great results

Trumpetboysmum · 04/12/2018 19:30

They are great results everyone Smile

Hi, how do you prepare your children?
My daughter passed grade 5 cello in June but now she had to take grade 5theory to be able to enter grade 6.
She is 10 and her cello teacher does not have time to teach her theory during the lesson and my daughter is not able to do it herself. I was thinking to hire a tutor. How long before she can take grade 5 theory?

Trumpetboysmum · 07/12/2018 16:52

Some people hire tutors . Ds ( though older) largely self taught . You can work your way through the abrsm books - bit boring but useful , also mymusictheory website is good

ThreeAndUs · 07/12/2018 18:17

DS age 10 received results for grade 5 theory this week, we had fingers crossed he would just pass it as he's on for grade 6 piano and trumpet in the spring, he only went and got a distinction! Very pleased it is all done and dusted. We had a separate tutor for theory, working through all the ABRSM theory workbooks, I think he completed 16 practise test papers, and in the last couple of weeks used the ABRSM's new theory app to revise called 'TheoryWorks', I would say it was an invaluable revision resource!

MeltingWax · 07/12/2018 20:59

Hi luckyfab - we prepped by working through the ABRSM workbooks for each grade and a shed load of pass papers. We didn't have a tutor, I just did it myself with the DCs but, in the interests of full disclosure, I do have an undergrad degree in music.

We started doing theory a bit each week last September (2017) and DD did the Grade 5 this November. Lots of people do it much faster than that but I wanted to be thorough as we are preparing without a teacher.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 08/12/2018 10:09

DS has never done any theory previously. We started looking at grade 3 stuff at the end of August and then just worked up from there to the exam. Unfortunately, school stuff got in the way, so he was still learning things like transposition at the last minute and only managed 3 last papers before the exam.

Trumpetboysmum · 08/12/2018 15:56

Ds was very on and off with his prep - basically he covered it all from the summer to the exam !! But the transposition was easy because he plays a transposing instrument so knew what you had to do for this one

Malbecfan · 09/12/2018 14:39

@Luckyfab I teach it from scratch in one term intensively and get pretty good results. Having made my own child grind through the books 10 years ago, I now get hold of the last 2 years' papers and teach using them as the kids I teach prefer it and it takes a lot less time.

Luckyfab · 09/12/2018 15:04

Thank you all!!!!

ja9r · 10/12/2018 18:21

Anyone still waiting?? Ds is...!

MeltingWax · 10/12/2018 18:36

You're still waiting on theory results?!? Is that because you are waiting for a teacher to let you know the results? They should all be online.

ja9r · 10/12/2018 20:04

He had lesson today and she said she didn't have results. She's v old school. Can I lol up myself? What info do I need?

ja9r · 10/12/2018 20:22

Dd got her practical exam result today ( certificate) so I guess we will just need to sit out the two week wait til the theory certificate arrives ! Angry

MeltingWax · 10/12/2018 20:37

It sounds as though the teacher may have made the exam entry by post - in that case I think the results would also come by post (as opposed to online results for an online entry).

MeltingWax · 10/12/2018 20:41

For online entries you need to register and then enter the candidate(s). The same person making the entry receives the notification when the results are ready & can log in and check. So if the teacher hasn't done that, it probably means she made the entries by post.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 13/12/2018 06:51

ja9r, DS's theory certificate arrived yesterday ( I also entered him myself), so hopefully your DS 's teacher now has his result.

Trumpetboysmum · 13/12/2018 07:02

Yes we got ours yesterday too - good set of marks - though how he managed to drop a mark in transposition when they were transposing for trumpet I’ll never know ( well provably something to do with being near / careful and not missing out accidental Wink !!)
