@BigButtons - that looks incredible and also like very hard work! Are the kids keen to uphold the traditions? Bet they love that.

Good article @Melassa . Interested in her recommendation that in our 50s it should be 50% cardio and 50% strength. I am trying to figure out how to incorporate cardio in a more organised way as all the science I've been reading is telling me I'm not doing enough. This seems to be the standard message: "Middle-aged can reverse heart risk with exercise, study suggests"
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-42565137.amp 4-5 sessions a week, mostly cardio. There was a yoga and weights group and they did not show these heart benefits.
.
Pretty much all the online fitfluencer stuff focuses heavily on the benefits of lifting, and cardio is not emphasised at all at the moment. Clearly, it is going to be harmful if you "just" lift- and you won't have much endurance or efficiency with that, either. Ordinary walking doesn't cut it. Something like @samthebordercollie 's exercise bike several times a week is probably something to look at.

As you say, time is the kicker. And energy. I'm in my 40s, pretty much permanently iron deficient and not feeling overburdened with either vim or vigour, gotta admit!

Group of people cycling

Middle-aged can reverse heart risk with exercise, study suggests

But there is a catch - it takes two years of aerobic exercise, four to five days a week, a study says.

That looked great @BigButtons
We dont really get into bonfire night that much where I am, would love something like what you did.
@goback ive always had a bit of a crush on jillian.
But i really dislike cardio...I do one session a week(have to force myself) dont think I could add in more.
I can do it when it's incorporated into a strength workout, so this is where the app might let me down

BigButtons · 07/11/2025 07:13

I am bonfire broken- heaven knows when I will have the stamina to pick up a weight!

Get wrecked by life events or by training for them... it's such a lose lose, isn't it. :D

How is IronPro going for those still doing it?

This morning I did cgx Full Body Split Day 2 of 3 (60mins) for at least the dozenth time. I have a Pavlovian response, a rush of happiness, when the finisher music starts because the torture is almost over. I love this series!

Last year she released a decent kettlebell week between the end of PE and the start of CGXmas. Hoping for a sequel to that (loved the upper body days particularly) or ultra-ideally a sequel to Full Body Split x 3 using the same music, which is just about bearable. Or else just a good set of cardio workouts of varying intensity to pick and choose from.

Fibrous · 07/11/2025 10:58

Iron pro still going fine here, I’ll be doing day 44 later. I think I’ve found the sweet spot with my training as the weight lifting is making me better at running. Usually with the gym it makes me so tired I can’t run as much. As I’m doing iron pro with fairly light weights (about half what she does) and doing 3-4/week it seems to be conditioning me without wearing me out. I quite enjoy the long rests in between even with lighter weights. I’m not sure what program I’ll do when it finishes but the 45 minutes is about the right length for my boredom levels.

Enrichetta · 07/11/2025 15:40

Same here - I don’t get on with full-on cardio sessions, but I find it helpful to do a short cardio workout before I tackle the weights. I particularly like Growingannanas - she has lots of short Tabata workouts with similarly high production values as Caroline’s….. and no talking.

SpaceRaccoon · 07/11/2025 15:50

I'm still plodding through Pro but quite a bit behind as I started late. Not enjoying it this week as I'm feeling really fatigued.

samthebordercollie · 07/11/2025 16:09

I love cardio! I enjoy cycling on my gravel bike and spin classes a lot more than lifting but it’s lifting that sculpts the body and builds muscle. I don’t even miss running too much now I’ve found spin classes, but I miss my running club and racing. @GobacktotheworldI’m finding previous gym bros who were anti cardio are now promoting it more end even doing it themselves. It’s equally if not more important than muscle for longevity. I’m another one with permanently low ferritin despite supplementing daily and I don’t have the excuse of periods as they finished 7 years ago. I just don’t absorb iron well from food.
I keep meaning to do a session of Iron Pro then I look at a workout from PE or Intent for the same body parts and do that instead because it’s more varied and without the long rests. I’m never going to go as heavy as Caroline in pro except for quads and the quad workouts in PE are more fun with the same weights.

SpaceRaccoon · 07/11/2025 17:11

I hate cardio, I love how I feel after cardio.

@samthebordercollie apparently if you're undiagnosed coeliac it causes low ferritin. I'm going for tests after developing a rash that points to dermatitis herpetiformis. Also really struggle with ferritin levels. Just a thought - many peplle are asymptomatic as well.

samthebordercollie · 07/11/2025 19:50

@SpaceRaccoonthats really interesting, thankyou! I didn’t know that. I don’t have all the symptoms but do I fart a lot 😂(tmi) but eat a lot of protein and fibre so thought it was that.
went for x ray today for my knee, advanced osteoarthritis (and start of osteoarthritis in other knee) which is why running is so painful. Or was, it’s definitely over for me now 😢. On the bright side, weightlifting and low impact cardio are recommended so I can keep on squatting, lunging and cycling.

Gobacktotheworld · 07/11/2025 20:52

That sucks, @samthebordercollie Flowers

Minesril · 08/11/2025 09:29

Epic two day five today - hour long full body. It’s been a while since I did one that long! Time went quicker than I expected, though. I love no-repeat (although there was a staple). Only one exercise where I said ‘da fuck??’ One legged push up to kick through, where you had to sort of bring your body forward and flip over. Madness!

Gobacktotheworld · 08/11/2025 09:44

That's so much fun failing at :D. Those Epic II ones usually have one move I just can't even attempt haha.

Cardio for me- long day out with family ahead today, but did a Courtney Anderson kickboxing one recommended on here first thing. It says low impact but I don't think so, tik tok lunges always jar imo. Still a fun workout that by went quickly. I have done 4 or 5 of her 30hour cardio now and am impressed by the variety and her blonde energiser bunny vibes! I'm brunette and so follow along much more sedately.

Gobacktotheworld · 09/11/2025 12:43

Another youtube binge this morning for me- this excellent, challenging TRX full body one with the cheap Amazon dupe.

This woman, Stephanie, also has a 45 minute trx pilates one I cannot make it past halfway through yet.

Then did Caroline's step up dumbbell 20 min one yet again- perfect for if you only have 2 medium dumbbells. I used 2 x 10kg.

mor’ing everyone, it’s quiet here this week! Hope you are all OK. @Gobacktotheworldare you still in between houses at the moment?
I’m still ignoring Iron Pro and doing my own thing with workouts from other programmes.
interesting thread on Reddit this morning on Silly Boy and his Silly Wife if anyone’s interested (spoiler alert: they are not popular!)

The thing is, they are more than super fans aren't they?
He writes all his very serious and interesting articles for caroline
I also remember seeing a photo of caroline and the Kearneys too.(it wasnt a cardboard cut out-though im sure they have one somewhere)

Fibrous · 13/11/2025 13:45

Hi! Toxic positivity is right. Maybe they’re both secretly clinically depressed and it’s all a front.

I’ve had a few days in a row where I actually had to leave my house and engage with the wider populace and one of the fuckers has given me a nasty cold so I’ve been sensible and stopped exercising. I have zero energy and beaucoup phlegm so limiting myself to half arsed working from bed and some dog walks. Hoping this doesn’t turn into a three month coughathon like I seem to get every other year. I got my flu jab in early this year in the hope it helped me avoid it.

I’ve got a load of elderberries in the freezer, need to make myself a syrup.

BigButtons · 13/11/2025 16:49

Sorry you are poorly @fibrous . I caught a bug off the exhaustion from bonfire and working face to face with snot rags kids in badly ventilated classrooms. Also a horrible dry cough . So I have not picked up any weights for well over a week. I feel guilty, but I am so bloody tired. I am stuffing carbs in me and am perma hungry.
Good news is that my daily sinus rinses seem to be stopping the severity of the bugs I am getting. No sinus infection yet ( unheard of at this stage in the year).
I shall check out reddit!
if I feel well enough next week I might revisit tempo week- such a great series.

The Reddit thread is worth checking out. Did you realise that silly boy and his Temu Caroline wife have several different profile on the App? On one occasion they all congratulated him on whatever he’d done 😂😂😂

Honestly those two batshit characters are not brand-positive for Caroline.

I'm not feeling it this week, I have a niggly hip tendon.

BigButtons · 13/11/2025 18:11

@samthebordercollie how can I find the that Reddit thread?
