Couch to 5k accountability

FunIsland · 07/07/2024 08:58

I searched for another thread and couldn’t find one, so apologies if it’s a repeat.

I used to run 5k daily, then covid left me with the lungs of a 90 year old chain smoker. I’ve tried so many times to get back to it and doing too much means that I end up out of action with pretty much everything for weeks. I’m stuck in a cycle of either doing nothing or doing too much because I miss running so much that when I get started I just want to do a Forest Gump and keep going.

Does anyone want to join me for couch to 5k? I’m thinking that if I make myself accountable I’ll stick with it (both in terms of actually getting up and doing it but also not trying to leap ahead).

W8R1 done 🙂.

Where's everyone gone!

beguilingeyes · 13/09/2024 07:28

I've graduated. Doing a few consolidation runs of 30 mins before I do the next bit. We have a charity 5k for the Terry Fox foundation in Battersea on Sunday.

FunIsland · 14/09/2024 09:40

Brilliant! Good luck with the charity 5k

@VictoryOrDeath I’m about to do week 8 run 2. Still enjoying it but work is busy so often I’m getting up and starting work early rather than running (which is rubbish) or avoiding both by going on mumsnet (which is worse)

@beguilingeyes, that's brilliant - well done and congratulations!

@FunIsland, IKWYM, and I'm wondering how we'll keep this up over winter.

W8R2 done. I struggled with everything - my running belt, my decision to also bring a long sleeved top, and my watch too 😄. And then there loads of people and dogs and hills.

Claire903 · 14/09/2024 11:48

It's great hearing of people's progress...keep it going. I'm still recovering from last Sunday's great north run

Mysterian · 14/09/2024 17:27

Well done @beguilingeyes.

My aim is to do a whole Parkrun without some kind of mishap. So far my lace snapped with a minute to go, my shorts slipped down, and the last time I thought I had run trouble free but took my shoes off and found quite a bit of blood due to a stone rubbing.

NDerbys32 · 15/09/2024 20:32

Penultimate C25K run today. On a gym treadmill as it was boshing down with rain. Much better weather is predicted for this week so i'll, hopefully, finish it by the canal with coffee & cake.
Enjoy the week folks and hope you're all doing ok

VictoryOrDeath · 16/09/2024 19:02

W8R3 done 🙂.

I keep making the mistake of also taking a long sleeved top.

FunIsland · 18/09/2024 08:05

Just done week 8 run 3 too. I’ve had a week or so of stepping back because of a bad chest but it’s really encouraging to see all your updates popping up.

I loved this mornings run, it wasn’t the quickest but it just felt so comfortable and I’m buzzing now!

Thank you all for the updates, keep them coming!

And that's just what it's about. Enjoying it. I couldn't care less about times. In fact I ditched wearing a watch when running years ago and won't have the fancy tech to track everything. I want away from that when I'm out there and enjoy it all the more for it. No criticism of anyone who does.
Just do your thing

VictoryOrDeath · 19/09/2024 19:35

W9R1 done 🙂. I didn't quite realise it's our last week!

FunIsland · 20/09/2024 08:06

Week 9run 1. I love running so much. I’m a hot and sweaty mess but I love it!

W9R2 done. DH came too, and because of that, DS and I ran a bit faster 🙂.

NDerbys32 · 22/09/2024 17:53

And finished C25K on Friday, followed by a large coffee and bacon sandwich. Got to say it was harder at 60 than it was in my 40's. I'll keep it ticking over now and maybe parkrun soon.
Keep going folks!

VictoryOrDeath · 22/09/2024 19:35

Congratulations @NDerbys32 🏃🏽‍♀️!

ThisIsMyExerciseName · 23/09/2024 11:03

Well done! 🏃🏻‍♀️

VictoryOrDeath · 23/09/2024 19:24

W9R3 done, so DS and I have finished 🥳! I'm really proud of him for sticking with it.

Now we just need to keep it going as a thing that we do.

FunIsland · 23/09/2024 21:21

Brilliant achievement to all of you who’ve graduated! I’ve got 2 left to do. Had a university reunion this weekend so no run since Friday, going to try and get up early tomorrow

Hi, congratulations to all of you finishers 🙂. Is anyone early on in the programme or are you are all finishing, because you all started together?

I restarted the c25k today (W1R1). I last ran about 10yrs ago but picked up an injury that needed intensive physio, so have done other things since then. I've only ever done the c25k via the app but this time I'm doing it with a local club (1 group run a week with 2x homework runs). I think it'll be better for my stickability, plus it's nice to meet new people.

Oh that’s an interesting change. I’m interested to know how you get on with that. I like running by myself but I know other people love running groups so I’m interested to know how you get on. I think we are all finishing but that doesn’t mean the thread has to go I think! Future cohorts can take over, we just need to bump it to the top of the list

We did our first post-Couch To 5k run!

We just randomly ran for a a bit longer than usual, but I've just been looking at Beyond Couch To 5k, so we'll try that next 🙂.

FunIsland · 28/09/2024 10:05

Just did the last run, so have graduated. Definitely planning to keep going 🥰

Just done Barking Parkrun. Beautifully flat and 42 minutes.

VictoryOrDeath · 28/09/2024 10:26

Congratulations @FunIsland! It's great to get to the end - I love the little video that points out that you've gone from running for 1min to 30mins 🥳.

Well done to all of the ParkRunners too 🙂, I might give one a go.

FunIsland · 09/11/2024 15:55

I am resurrecting this thread to say ‘I can’t believe I ran 7k!’ How is everyone else getting on?
