Couch to 5k accountability

I searched for another thread and couldn’t find one, so apologies if it’s a repeat.

I used to run 5k daily, then covid left me with the lungs of a 90 year old chain smoker. I’ve tried so many times to get back to it and doing too much means that I end up out of action with pretty much everything for weeks. I’m stuck in a cycle of either doing nothing or doing too much because I miss running so much that when I get started I just want to do a Forest Gump and keep going.

Does anyone want to join me for couch to 5k? I’m thinking that if I make myself accountable I’ll stick with it (both in terms of actually getting up and doing it but also not trying to leap ahead).

Hi. I did C25K during lockdown and got up to 45 minutes of running. Then got Covid 3 1/2 years ago and still have Long Covid. I tried a few times to restart but went all covidy again. Last august to October I got all the way to week 4 before a chest infection put me right back to the start again. It took months before I could re-restart. I just finished week 5 and feel possibly slightly dodgy so this might be my limit.

Rule 1 of Long Covid is don't go over your limit. Maybe go walking instead. Maybe just stick to week 1 for a few months. It's all about getting to know where your covid limit is and doing as much as possible up to that.

FunIsland · 07/07/2024 11:20

Absolutely agree and I’m sorry that you’re suffering. I got Covid in the March of lockdown and ended up with long Covid. I changed job and car and also stopped doing lots of leisure stuff as physically I couldn’t do it anymore. It’s been a huge change of lifestyle and a lot of my pre Covid identity has gone but usually I’m happy to just accept what is. It’s the running that just seems so tantalizingly out of reach.

I’m happy to take it steady, I just need reminding sometimes (hence the accountability thread 🤣).

Week one, run one done!

I'm in! I did week 1, run 3 yesterday. I'm v v v unfit!

helpfulperson · 08/07/2024 20:55

For a few years I did c to 5k every year although my 30 min run was always nearer 4k. But I never kept it up over the winter. So I'm now on W2 R1 tomorrow and hope to start parkrun's at the end of august.

FunIsland · 08/07/2024 21:19

Brilliant!

Even if we’re slow, we’re still out there moving because we’re fricking awesome!!

I'm in!
I'm doing 'none to run' as the couch to 5k was too difficult and it put me off.

I really like N2R, it seems to build fitness. Nice voice of the chap and it syncs well wot my Apple Watch.

I got to week 5 last year then got a foot injury and I gave up. So I'm starting again this year, aim to be getting to week 12 before Oct half term holiday.

FunIsland · 12/07/2024 22:33

I’ve never heard of that but I did see a Twitter post the other day warning people that there’s no couch in couch to 5k which made me laugh.

how’s everyone getting on?

Sorry to be a bit late to the party, but I'm in! Started my Couch to 5k today, week 1 run 1 done ✔️
Like you OP I also searched for a thread to take part in and hold myself accountable. So thank you for making this one!
I have recently been diagnosed with PCOS which, amongst other things, explains why my extra kgs are being so stubborn to shift. I eat healthily and get to the gym for weightlifting 2-3 times per week, but I'm hoping that incorporating a C25k run every other day or so each week will really help me both fitness-wise and weight-wise.

How's everyone getting on?

Stormyforcast · 14/07/2024 18:44

Yes pls.
I did 2 runs in week 1 and now life got mental.
I need accountability too to keep going

beguilingeyes · 14/07/2024 18:48

My journey has been sporadic because of work, but hopefully I'll get W3 R3 done tomorrow morning.

helpfulperson · 14/07/2024 19:01

Completed w2 r3 today.

LoudSnoringDog · 14/07/2024 21:16

Can I join? I'm starting week 4 d1 tomorrow

I have a London marathon place for next April so have started couch to 5k to get back into running ( I've done two half marathons previously but the last one was in 2019)

FunIsland · 14/07/2024 22:41

Fantastic to see so many people joining and being at different points of the programme. I’m going to do week 2 run 3 tomorrow. Really enjoying running on hills at the moment whereas usually I avoid them 🤣

London marathon is a brilliant goal, we will cheer you on!

Week 6 run 2 finished. Wasn't fully fit and felt really bad at the end.

In some ways it feels like the end because it's all solid runs from now on.

FunIsland · 14/07/2024 23:38

@Mysterian it’s hard to have a challenging run, will you repeat it when you’re feeling a bit better?

OP posts:
Mysterian · 15/07/2024 00:05

Thought I might go back one and repeat the last 2 runs. Otherwise it's a big step from 2 10 minute runs to a solid 25. Just feels too much at the moment.

Thighdentitycrisis · 15/07/2024 00:35

I did week7 run 2 last Saturday but it’s been more than a week now since I ran. Planning next run tomorrow and Wednesday then I’m away for the rest of the week.work and other commitments are making it harder at the moment but keep on trying

That sounds sensible, it’s hard when life gets in the way, I find that creating the habit is the hardest thing

Just did week 4 day 1. Those x2 5 mins almost killed me.
It's humid too out there 😬

NDerbys32 · 15/07/2024 12:39

I'm a long lapsed runner and decided to start C25K two weeks ago. I'm lucky in that I've done a lot of running before, but it surprised me that there's no lead up to that first run, taking in some build up walking, before starting out on the run/ walk programme..

I hadn't checked into it all before, but is it just me? I do wonder if some might be put off that's all.

Good luck to everyone doing it. I'm hoping to get back to running 5k, and in time 10k, but at 60 I'm going easy to get there.

ADHDHDHDHD · 15/07/2024 17:47

Yes the C25k is just ridiculous. Really off putting. None to run is for non runners who need to build up fitness.
