Great North Run 2022

Anyone else signed up for this?

Got the email yesterday 3 months to go (gulp) it will be my longest ever run, I'm feeling a little nervous but following a training plan and hoping the crowds and atmosphere on the day will spur me on.

I'm aiming for 2hrs 10mins or below but not sure yet how realistic this is, I ran 8 miles in 80mins last week.

Off out for a half hour run soon pushing the running buggy

@GreatNorthRunner2022 I struggled to the end and didn't enjoy it much at all :( I really wanted it to be the best thing in the world for my first attempt, and I was doing great til about 7 miles and then suddenly felt as if I was going to black out. I pushed through what felt like a combination of heatstroke and mega hip pain, and finished in 2hr32. I'm used to doing it in 1hr45 when I run round my own streets, but this was a million times harder! But when I stopped my watch, it said I'd run 19 miles. Wth??? I thought it must be a mistake but when I checked my phone it also said 19 miles, and all that was recorded from 11.05 when I crossed the start line to 1.37 at the finish, so nothing extra for the walk to the start or anything. Really mystifying!!! Is it possible to have run so much further than I needed to? No bloody wonder I was so knackered!! Either that or both my watch and phone have been deceiving me all this time. Any answers???! Well done to everyone who did it, it was bloody hard work! 👏

No. Not unless you climbed over the barriers and went for an extra jaunt down to Sunderland and back!!
Also mystified as to how you run 13 miles in 1:45 in training but it took you 2:30 on the day. Have you run half marathon races before and if so, in what time? Something doesn't add up..

fellrunner85 · 13/09/2022 11:54

If you post a pic of your mile splits and the GPS trace it should be easy enough to figure out what happened.

@fellrunner85 So this is a screenshot of last weekend's run....

Normally I feel great when I'm running, but on Sunday it was like trawling through a swamp, I could barely move at some points, and I was so frustrated at how slow I felt 😭

xsquared · 13/09/2022 13:00

@19Bears Sorry you struggled towards the end. The second half definitely felt warmer!

Could you check your results break down for each mile? If you have a Garmin, you can check and compare there as well, if you started your watch as soon as you passed the Start line and stopped it at the finish. 6 miles is a long way for it to be off.

19Bears · 13/09/2022 13:11

@xsquared My garmin is only a Vivomove so I don't think it gives me split times after the event. It buzzes after each mile during the run, but it was so bright I couldn't see the blinkin screen most of the time. But when I could see it, it was 7.47 min per mile, 8 min per mile etc... I'm baffled!!!

fellrunner85 · 13/09/2022 13:22

The GPS isn't working on your watch, from the looks of it. That's why instead of a map of where you've been, there's just a blob.
I would think it's safe to assume you didn't run an extra 6 miles though!

xsquared · 13/09/2022 13:33

Having had a Google, it looks like Vivomove HR doesn't have GPS.
I would take the GNR results as the one you ran a.d earned.

The thing that would worry me if I were in your position is if last weekend's run was really 13.2 miles or in reality a lot less because of lack of GPS.

Either way, I think it might be time to treat yourself to a new watch!

GNR2022 · 13/09/2022 13:47

Does anyone mind if I ask a question about the finish line?

Does anyone mind if I ask a question about the finish line?

Not at all. Not sure whether I can give you the answer but ask away.

19Bears · 13/09/2022 13:52

Oops, I should have mentioned, that's my phone the screenshots are from. I use the Samsung Health app, and it's completely unconnected to my watch, which I assume calculates the distance from the steps I take, whereas the phone will use gps...

I just wanted to ask about your medals, I was on the team handing them out this year and I just wanted to check that everything was ok! We see so many people on the day but never really get any feedback!

19Bears · 13/09/2022 13:59

@GNR2022 Well I for one was extremely grateful, and relieved, to get mine, so thank you very much!!!!! I thought everyone working on the event did a really good job 😊

Thank you for volunteering at the finish line. I was so pleased to get my medal and really appreciated the hug even when I was covered in salt and sweat!

@19Bears Now that you've mentioned you use the Samsung app, I know that what they say on the stats does not match up with what the reality is. I've got a Samsung phone and used to run the app the same time as I run Strava and there was a huge discrepancy between the figures.

After I bought myself a Garmin and used Garmin Connect, the figures matched m9re closely.

19Bears · 13/09/2022 16:26

Thank you @xsquared I have now downloaded Strava! I'll test it out on Sunday and see what conclusions I come up with. I'm dreading the fact that I've been banging on about my surprisingly good running times to anyone who'll listen, it's all been wrong, and I've been LIVING A LIE FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS!!!!!! NOOOOOO!!!! 😣

xsquared · 13/09/2022 16:42

Aw @19Bears . I hope it is just a glitch but you can compare your stats when you run the same route and have Strava running.
If it is wrong on Strava, it would normally be very obvious.

19Bears · 13/09/2022 17:03

I only started running to get away from my bloody husband, and now I find myself in THIS turmoil!!! 😫😅

Hopefully it will spur you on!

Do you run with a friend or in a club? It might be a good idea to keep you accountable amd motivated.

Someone will be wearing a watch with gps so you can always compare the distance to see it matches.

GreenLadybug · 13/09/2022 19:46

@19Bears also an idea if you have a regular route you run out it on map my run or similar website and you can see how long it is.
