Great North Run 2022

Anyone else signed up for this?

Got the email yesterday 3 months to go (gulp) it will be my longest ever run, I'm feeling a little nervous but following a training plan and hoping the crowds and atmosphere on the day will spur me on.

I'm aiming for 2hrs 10mins or below but not sure yet how realistic this is, I ran 8 miles in 80mins last week.

Off out for a half hour run soon pushing the running buggy

I'm doing it too, for the third time!
The atmosphere is amazing, the crowd really help get you round.
There are a couple of hilly bits, so I'm looking to include some inclines in my training.
See you there!

Welcome @Calphurnia .

It would be my first GNR and first half event. Thanks for the tip about the hills. I am due to do stride repeats next but I think I'll do hill sprints instead!

GreatNorthRunner2022 · 11/07/2022 20:51

Hi @Calphurnia my husband has done it a couple times maybe I need to find me a vague slope or a flyover to run up and down (I live fenland type area) so hills are few and far between here 😬🙄

There's no actual hills in the Great North Run (apart from the steep downhill to the river at the start!), but there are a couple of fairly long, gradual, steady inclines - the one up the John Reid Road to the coast is the one that hurts, as you're just getting to the part of the race where you need to dig deep.
If there's a way you can replicate that in training - ie incorporating a long gradual climb when you're already tired, I'd recommend it.

@trailrunner85 that's a really useful tip thanks I will definitely give that a go. I'm looking forward to it as I've got family in Newcastle but I'm also a bit nervous it seems a long old way and I need to get some more training in around work and this heatwave

Hope you guys are coping okay with the heat -ive been getting up early doing around 45min run then going to work, thankfully looks like it's cooling down on weds

Just got my race numbering the post.

Can't believe it's less than 3 weeks away!

GreatNorthRunner2022 · 23/08/2022 06:15

Mine came yesterday too! It's come around so quickly! Feeling so much fitter than I was when I started this thread :)

Just been for a 2hour / 12mile run after work. Only a little more to find on the day 🤞😬🙈

How is everyone feeling about this Sunday?

I'm excited but I have a feeling I won't get my target time, as my right leg seems to fatigue a lot sooner. Seeing a physio for a pre race massage tomorrow, so hoping to get some helpful advice there.

One more gentle run on Friday and that's me done for training. I'll be volunteering at Parkrun this week instead of running it. I guess it'll be quieter this week as people's are their legs for the next day.

xsquared · 08/09/2022 23:07

Great North 5k has been cancelled due to the Queen's death and we will find out tomorrow what happens to the weekend's events.

GreatNorthRunner2022 · 09/09/2022 03:56

I was feeling sort of ready @xsquared , we will now have to wait and see if it's cancelled, would be a shame if it is after all the organisation etc, perhaps the will be a silence instead of cancling

OP posts:
xsquared · 09/09/2022 10:57

I think that would be the most practical solution given so many people have already travelled up for the weekend for this.

If they decide to cancel, I would probably just run 13.1 miles up the A167 and back.

GreatNorthRunner2022 · 09/09/2022 15:39

@xsquared we can't travel up till I finish work tomorrow 😭 but I'm looking forward to it sort of 🤣🙈

Great, hope the journey ey goes well. Do you have far to travel?

GreatNorthRunner2022 · 09/09/2022 16:46

I live in Peterborough so it's around 200 miles / 3.5 hours straight up the a1 hope it goes well for you

Thanks. You too.

Calphurnia · 11/09/2022 17:26

Hope everyone had a great run. It was very hot out there!

xsquared · 11/09/2022 18:01

Yes, it did get rather warm in the end.
I've had a great day apart fro the queueing amd queueing!

It was great seeing Eilish McColgan in the flesh.

xsquared · 11/09/2022 18:02

How did you find it?

xsquared · 11/09/2022 23:20

Oh, also bumped into a Game of Thrones actor who ran it!

GreatNorthRunner2022 · 12/09/2022 21:32

I really enjoyed it too apart from the queuing absolutely smashed my original target and came away with a time of 2hrs2mins

OP posts:
xsquared · 12/09/2022 22:33
