If you regularly run ultra, are planning your first or are kinda secretly mulling over the idea of doing one Smile welcome to the party.

Oh no! @Runningforcakes.
It was 4 miles in...I can't believe you managed to run another 16 after! You did so well to finish the race!
How are you feeling now?

Runningforcakes · 08/09/2021 11:43

I know! I just couldn’t face having to fit another long run in if I didn’t get that one done.
Arm is still pretty sore but everything else working well so I’m relieved about that.
Just so, so embarrassing!

TheWholeWorld · 09/09/2021 10:05

I've got Great North Run this weekend - is anyone else going?

I've done no training, my longest run recently has been 13k. I was totally burnt out with work this summer and really needed some complete rest so didn't run for a month. Just getting back into it now. I'm really hoping it's not a disaster. I'm going to treat it like a training run and dial back on the pace. I want to enjoy it though even though I'll be slow.

I don't know whether to drop back some waves. I'm in orange - never done it before so I don't know what other waves there are.

RelentlessForwardProgress · 09/09/2021 21:52

@TheWholeWorld Good luck with the Great North Run.
I'm sure it won't be a disaster...if you can do 13k you can do a half Smile I've no idea about the waves, sorry, hopefully someone else does!

My old weight lifting coach used to say that PB's always come in September, as everyone has had a good rest over the summer so they are well rested for the hard stuff...... x

Oh I love the idea of a well rested pair of legs in September Smile

catinthewindow · 10/09/2021 16:28

I’m out on my longest training run and catching up whilst walking up a very steep hill 😂 I can’t decide if London will be easy after all my hilly routes or boring Blush

Currently on mile 18 and coveting anyone’s well rested legs 😬😂

OJandacupoftea · 10/09/2021 21:20

@catinthewindow did you finish strong? Feeling ok?

catinthewindow · 11/09/2021 04:51

@OJandacupoftea … remarkably fine thank you! Did 22 miles. Only really stopped because I needed to sort the kids dinner 😂🙄

Definitely falling in love with the idea of ultras. I much prefer distance over speed and feels much less competitive.

Everything seems fine bar being awake too early 🤔

Runningforcakes · 11/09/2021 07:52

Well done @catinthewindow. Sounds like you’ll be great.
I’m doing 22 tomorrow with a friend which I’m kind of looking forward to.

TheWholeWorld · 11/09/2021 12:38

Well done @catinthewindow that's a great distance, you'll be well set for London after those hills. And good luck @Runningforcakes. Must admit I never ran more than 20 miles on a long run so I'm full of admiration!

Quite looking forward to GNR now, I'm up in Newcastle, it's a lovely city in the sunshine I've got to admit.

Runningforcakes · 11/09/2021 13:19

Have a great run @TheWholeWorld. I did it a few years ago and really enjoyed it.

emummy · 11/09/2021 15:01

Good luck @TheWholeWorld!

catinthewindow · 11/09/2021 15:20

@Runningforcakes I think 22 miles is definitely better with a friend! Have fun 🤩

Is anyone else just a bit useless about fuelling themselves properly? I really would never have thought this would have been an issue for me but it seems like the longer I run, the more my appetite disappears and then I wonder why I feel odd Confused . But eating much after a long run feels impossible.

catinthewindow · 11/09/2021 15:21

And good luck @TheWholeWorld !

LtGreggs · 11/09/2021 15:50

@catinthewindow I don't have that problem at all and could eat (particularly carbs) all day after a run. This is why I do not lose weight running!

It's odd how people have different 'appetite' responses to things.

Runningforcakes · 11/09/2021 16:10

@catinthewindow. I’ve paid for a training/nutrition plan/coach for London (never done that before-just wing it usually) and fuelling has been a revelation. I find it hard to get enough in during a run, especially towards the end but have been practising and it definitely helps. Plus I look forward to the recovery chocolate milkshake afterwards!
I much prefer ultra fuelling with jam sandwiches etc. rather than road gels 🤢

catinthewindow · 11/09/2021 16:49

@LtGreggs it’s fascinating isn’t it! I don’t have this issue on mid range runs but go over say 2 hours and my appetite switches off

I love the sound of a nutrition plan @Runningforcakes . I can’t stomach gels but can manage sweets Grin

RelentlessForwardProgress · 11/09/2021 22:36

Good luck @TheWholeWorld
I hope you have a fabulous time tomorrow!

GNR went really well, Geordies are very nice friendly people aren't they! Route was a bit trash but it was good fun regardless. Hope everyone's weekend running went well.

WithCatLikeTread · 12/09/2021 17:46

Well done to GNR runners!
Bit far for me to go but people seem to enjoy it.

Was tracking a friend in Brighton and I’m hoping his tracker broke as he didn’t register after halfway.

Heel is still a bit sore (bursitis) but I may try a very short 2 miler tomorrow and see if it makes any difference.

A friend with the same issue was told to learn to live with it so maybe I have to too.

6 weeks to a marathon, 7 to the ultra. Eek.

LtGreggs · 12/09/2021 17:56

Well done to the GNR!

I was pleased with my running week - I'm back almost to where I was pre-injury 7 weeks ago. Dithering on whether to attempt a virtual/solo/unofficial version of my cancelled October marathon or to leave it to the re-scheduled date in May. Or I suppose both.

Also injinji toe trail socks arriving this week!

catinthewindow · 12/09/2021 18:41

Well done @TheWholeWorld!

RandomUsernameHere · 12/09/2021 19:24

Well done on the GNR @TheWholeWorld! It was on the news and looked like a great atmosphere.
Hope everyone else's weekend running went well. I expect there were a few of us doing long runs seeing as it's now 3 weeks until London Marathon. I'm doing the Jersey Marathon which coincidentally is on the same day. Very jealous of those doing London though!

Runningforcakes · 12/09/2021 19:24

Well done @TheWholeWorld! Glad you enjoyed it.
My 22 was ok. Friend only did 10 so the rest was a plod listening to my audiobook. I think that’s the longest one done now with only three weeks to go 😬

RandomUsernameHere · 12/09/2021 19:34

Same here, that's the longest one done for me. I did 32km so about 20 miles. Although did a full (trail) marathon in early August too. I don't have a marathon training partner so it got a bit boring today!
