If you regularly run ultra, are planning your first or are kinda secretly mulling over the idea of doing one Smile welcome to the party.

Hi @QueenofBrickdon...I just booked the Leeds endure for next year. I had such a blast this year, it really is a very friendly race.

It would have a DNF ratio of about 95%

@RelentlessForwardProgress

Oooh what is the barefoot controversy...?I wear size 9 men's my feet are so big and wide, I really, really don't need them to get any bigger. I'm at the weeping in shoe shop stage when I'm trying to buy nice going out shoes already!! Is it trainers or barefoot shoes you think have made yours spread?

Well I think that after Chris Macdougall wrote born to run, loads of people ditched their shoes and promptly went running and got injured.

Vibram 5 fingers are expensive and people had bad experienced with them being expensive and not transitioning slowly enough.

I guess this lead to a 'them and us' mentality. I think shoe manufacturers were busy building shoes up and putting carbon plates in, dominating the market with tech. Cheat shoes?

I dunno. It garnered lots of curiosity that's for sure!

Oh and I have never run totally barefoot, so it's minimalist shoes and walking around the house barefoot that has done it!

Injinji socks are fab and they aren’t all low rise - the trail socks are lovely and soft too and provide a bit of cushioning. I always wear these and never get blisters! They are £££ though.
There is also a company called Yamatune who do the toe socks as well.

Welcome @emummy I also have a marathon in October and a half on Sunday. Yours sounds a bit more exciting though!

I’ve been tempted by the marathon in France with red wine - unsure but I think you taste some as you go around.

Could be a laugh trying to finish, not sure if there’s a cut off time!

It usually sells out @catinthewindow, can't think why!
I think the marathon du medoc cut off is about 6 hours - I'm not sure that would be long enough when you're drunk!

@WithCatLikeTread - I saw that one on the wine show and thought definitely one day … I’d need help not wandering off after the second chateau though 😂

I like to balance my running with a healthy dose of wine and cake 🙌

How was the weekend running for everyone?

We continue to have lovely weather (Scotland). I'm still definitely in recovery mode, but got three decent mid-week runs in and then a really hilly 14k trail run today - toughest terrain I've run since I got injured. I ran with a friend, which is unusual for me but I did enjoy it. She wasn't so used to the trail running so slowed me down a bit, which was almost certainly a good thing! My calf is a bit achey tonight, so in retrospect I'm glad I didn't got ott on distance.

Hi @LtGreggs. I'm glad you enjoyed your trail run. I don't often have company when I run but really enjoy it when I do too. What do you consider a decent midweek run?

I've just got in from a nice run down the canal, it was the perfect evening for it but I got bitten like mad. I didn't run much in the week as I was still feeling breathless, been hammering in the iron and I am starting to feel a bit better though.

I hope your half's went well, @emummy and @RandomUsernameHere

@RelentlessForwardProgress hmmm what do I mean by decent. I guess when my marathon training was a bit more 'on' I would have meant that I had achieved the plan plus also more or less enjoyed it! This week I did three runs that I enjoyed plus also felt like progress on fitness. I did a hill rep session with my fitness class on Monday and felt quite chuffed with how I managed that. Then a beautiful sunny evening 10k on Wed, with the seasonal milestone of being in the woods of thinking 'ooooh it's getting a bit dark in here' 😁. Then a very organised 9k ish on Friday morning that I did around the school bus drop-off. A short-but-steep hill walk yesterday, and then today's outing with a friend.

What does your running week typically look like?

I survived my half, just! Very hilly, 1300 feet, some nice views. I wasn't fast, walked most of the hills, but did enjoy it. Most useful was getting back to events and remembering the stuff I used to do - like bring a pre-race snack for when the race starts 4 hours after breakfast, oops! Then there was a big food festival afterwards so got plenty of recovery food.
Hope those bites are not too bad @RelentlessForwardProgress.

@RelentlessForwardProgress glad you're starting to feel a bit better.
The Half went well thanks! I've been doing the long marathon training runs on my own so it was a nice change and also gave me a better idea of where I'm at. The last marathon I did was a trail one on cliff paths so totally different to doing a road one. Now got a 5k race on Wednesday which is a bit soon probably!
How was everyone else's weekend running?

I did parkrun yesterday then a VERY HILLY 14 mile trail run with friends.

I have a hilly half marathon next Sunday and feel very slow and useless.

I did it last year and had a tumble but looking at my splits it was still an OK time. I don’t think I’ll make that time this year even without a fall.

I have got 2 training sessions and a group run this week.

I will walk parkrun next Saturday Smile

Good running people.

I saw the physio about my sore heel - some long complicated word bursitis apparently.

Couple of weeks off with exercise and ice and hopefully it’ll ease 🤞

@LtGreggs My running week really depends on whether I am in the lead in to a race with distance...

If so its probably 5miles mon -7m tue, 5m wed-rest on thurs-5miles fri -long run on Sat- rest on sunday. Last few weeks before race taper i'd do a long run fri and saturday back to back. If I want to do a parkrun I'd often do long run fri and park run sat as my short run.

I do a mix of trail and road and in between. Where I live I've got the sandstone trail in one direction, the shropshire way in the other, and lots of mosses to run round so I'm very lucky.

I agree with you completely that to be a successful run it needs to feel at least a bit enjoyable as well as just doing the mileage.

I had an awful period in Jan/Feb/March when I was trapped in the house home schooling and couldn't run until my DH got home at night (often 10pm). All the back roads and pavements were waterlogged, so I only had the main roads to run down (no pavements round here) and it felt like every night it was pouring or icy and I running on slippy roads in the dark, leaping out of the way of cars coming round blind bends. It was flipping awful, i'm not sure how I stuck at it in retrospect but it certainly wan't enjoyable.

@emummy glad the race went well. Booking one that ends at a food festival is an act of genius, well done Grin

@RandomUsernameHere crickey! take it easy in the 5k race on wednesday Smile

@WithCatLikeTread hopefully you will be as good as new after a couple of weeks rest. Did the physio say what had caused it or is it just overuse?

@OJandacupoftea aww falling in a race is my worst nightmare. I'm very clumsy so its bound to happen at some point but fortunately all my bad falls have been when I've been on my own to spare my embarrassment. Its brilliant you managed to carry on. I hope the re-run this year feels easier than you think it will.

I did a 20 mile race at the weekend as marathon prep.
Lived @RelentlessForwardProgress’s worst nightmare and went flying at 4 miles 🤦‍♀️
I’ve never really fallen like that before and it was horrible. So much blood! A lot of scraping all down one side and a big gash on my arm. I managed to carry on after a bit of a wobble and once some one had found a bandage and actually felt really good in every other way so if that hadn’t happened I think I could have got a good time.
