Morbidly obese - I want to walk up these steps...

This is a really long post, sorry, but I'd appreciate any advice/encouragement!

TL;DR: I want to walk up some steps without dying. How long to accomplish this?

4 years ago I was almost done with an 8 stone weightloss. Then stuff happened and I've gained it all back over the past 2-3yrs.

Rather than hating myself and resigning myself to living like this forever, slowly eating myself to death, I'm starting to try again. I've put my fitbit back on, got my streak going on MFP, etc. I know how to lose weight but I do struggle with motivation.

So I've set myself a goal.

There are some steps near to where I live and I want to walk up them without stopping and then dying at the top. They are utterly horrible, torturous steps and I want to conquer them. Currently I plod up them slowly and I have to stop 2-3 times. It's really quite embarrassing.

I won't be able to walk them everyday, maybe 3 times a week. I don't want to push myself too hard to start with because it's a surefire way to make me give up. Do you think I'd be able to accomplish this goal in 8 weeks? Or is that too lax?

It's these steps in Saltburn if anyone knows the area!

Amazing - in 7 weeks you'll be running up them - can see the progress already. How long d'you reckon it'll take you in 7 weeks? We should start betting - I'd say around 1.50.

Etinox · 18/03/2021 17:15

Brilliant!

5foot418stone · 19/03/2021 20:53

I'm really quite shocked because I did it in 2:20 without stopping this evening.

Wow! The hard work is really paying off!

Atreus · 19/03/2021 21:25

That's the brilliant thing about cardio exercise you can see a real difference really quickly. You're doing so well!

5foot418stone · 19/03/2021 22:18

I actually feel like I could achieve @reprehensibleme's bet of 1:50 eventually.

Also I've met my step goal already this week! I used to walk a lot but I got used to barely making it to 3-4k steps a day over the past couple of years. I've been getting at least 10k in for the past 12 days.

Wow! Just come across this. You're AWSOME! I'm two stone heavier than you are but tomorrow I'm going to find a similar challenge locally. You see - you ARE inspiring!

I love Saltburn. The last time we visited, there were knitted sea related things on the pier. What was that about?

5foot418stone · 19/03/2021 23:07

@PleaseReferToMeAsBritneySpears Go you! I can't really explain how such a tiny challenge has already improved not only my fitness but how I feel about myself in general. I honestly didn't think I'd finish the week but the support here is so kind and has helped me so much. Good luck finding your challenge and I will be cheering you on!

That's the work of the Saltburn Yarnbombers! They go out in secret at night and decorate all around the town. They do beautiful themed displays too, like the olympics, royal wedding etc. Very much loved around here and anyone caught messing with the displays gets thrown off the cliff Grin

Love it! xx

Workinghardeveryday · 19/03/2021 23:46

You did it!! So pleased for you. You must feel very proud and so you should!!! Most people would struggle with those steps lol.

Do it again tomorrow 😊 - try and beat your time, that could be your next goal!

Can’t believe how quickly you managed it x

Well after all my showing off yesterday I fell down these steps today. I am so sick of mud!

I didn't make it to saltburn but I'm gonna take some paracetamol and attempt the steps on my way home tonight. At least they aren't muddy!

Well done, that's fab! It's great when you can see a difference isn't it, spurs you on!

ShinyHatStand · 20/03/2021 22:01

You are amazing!
Keep going 😀

MrsPengwin · 20/03/2021 22:07

Well done OP you are brilliant. I’m similarly built and also hate steps and hills. I thought of you as I drove past those steps last week. I nearly stopped to check whether you were near to tell you how fab you are 😊 I’m local again later this week so will keep an eye out and wave if I see you!

5foot418stone · 21/03/2021 14:28

A very disappointing 2:53 today. Just couldn't push through the knee pain.

Tambourinetunes · 21/03/2021 17:37

Well done on keeping going. Perhaps just try walking on flatter areas for a few days so you are not aggravating it. The important bit is don’t give up completely. I heard someone along the lines of “Your struggle today is the strength you will feeel tomorrow, keep going” Not word for word accurate but hopefully you get the idea. Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevate. Possibly google any knee exercises. Do you have a small step you could use at home to practice, say 10 steps up and down before you go upstairs stepping up and down the bottom stair? Be kind to yourself, you have already come so far.

5foot418stone · 21/03/2021 19:35

Thanks tambourine 😊

Today is the 7th day in a row I've done it so I'm pleased with that.
I'll be finishing my week on about 120,000 steps which means I smashed my original goal of 85,000. So that's another win in my book.

Tomorrow I'm going to take a break from them! Then hopefully next week will be better and I'll push myself harder.

Dusted off the old elliptical machine tonight as well, so I can start using that tomorrow.

Wow! Well done OP! You're smashing this!
I'm currently loosing weight too. Since Jan only lost 1.5 stone. The last couple weeks I have just maintained not done much exercise just daily walks so need to get back on track. This has reminded me to do better so thank you!

OneMillionSteps · 21/03/2021 19:53

You’re doing brilliantly OP!

Your thread reminded me of this poster I saw on the London Underground many years ago - it’s always stuck in my mind Grin

You've started something now........ We have a 'staircase' locally with 211steps so I'm going to try and climb it at least 3x a week. First try today 7min 05sec and it nearly finished me off. Will see how long it takes me to do it in 5 minutes!

5foot418stone · 24/03/2021 17:05

211 😱 that's awesome @reprehensibleme, you'll be smashing 5 minutes in no time! Looking forward to your updates!
