Morbidly obese - I want to walk up these steps...

This is a really long post, sorry, but I'd appreciate any advice/encouragement!

TL;DR: I want to walk up some steps without dying. How long to accomplish this?

4 years ago I was almost done with an 8 stone weightloss. Then stuff happened and I've gained it all back over the past 2-3yrs.

Rather than hating myself and resigning myself to living like this forever, slowly eating myself to death, I'm starting to try again. I've put my fitbit back on, got my streak going on MFP, etc. I know how to lose weight but I do struggle with motivation.

So I've set myself a goal.

There are some steps near to where I live and I want to walk up them without stopping and then dying at the top. They are utterly horrible, torturous steps and I want to conquer them. Currently I plod up them slowly and I have to stop 2-3 times. It's really quite embarrassing.

I won't be able to walk them everyday, maybe 3 times a week. I don't want to push myself too hard to start with because it's a surefire way to make me give up. Do you think I'd be able to accomplish this goal in 8 weeks? Or is that too lax?

It's these steps in Saltburn if anyone knows the area!

The thought of having my dinner once I got home gave me a boost🤣

I've. Just read the whole thread and think it's brilliant what you're doing @5foot418stone. Very inspiring!!

5foot418stone · 16/03/2021 17:38

Only a mile to go and then I can sit down. Should be about 7.5 miles I've covered today!

I feel much better than I did yesterday. Looking forward to nicer weather that's for sure! It's a nice walk when it's sunny 😊

That is so impressive! Getting started is the hardest bit, as you get fitter it will only get easier. Definitely joining the virtual cheering squad.

Oh wow. I just found your thread. You are awesome and I'm following you with much excitement!
I'm so impressed and proud of you. Well done!

Well done @5foot418stone!
I used to run a few times a week but I sprained my ankle a few months ago and getting back to it is so difficult. Like others have said, make it a habit so that it's just something you do. Some days are more difficult than others, and for no good or obvious reason, but the fact that you get out and do it, even when you dont want to is brilliant.
I need some of your dedication!

Etinox · 16/03/2021 19:29

The photos are stunning. As is your achievement- keep on at it!

NewSong · 16/03/2021 19:43

Well done again OP! I had to Google where you are as haven't heard of it, looks lovely.
I went out for a run last night with my group as we are now allowed to meet, was hard going! Stiff today so have done a lot of stretching and a short walk.

Tambourinetunes · 16/03/2021 19:53

Well done and thank you for sharing the photos. The view is spectacular and a real reward for the effort you are putting in.

5foot418stone · 16/03/2021 19:55

Thanks for cheering me on, I really do appreciate it! Especially on days like yesterday and today where I could barely make myself do it.

I'm definitely not inspiring! I should never have let myself put all the weight back on. Still, I don't want to die before I'm 40 so I'm getting my bum in gear and I will be a healthy weight again eventually.

Focusing on those bloody steps is helping me not obsess over calories and the scale which is nice. I haven't binged since sometime in February which is just huge for me. I just want to fuel my body properly. There's like a little spark of the old me still there. :)

I know I'm only a week in but I am determined!

Those photos are beautiful! Definitely worth the effort to get there! Well done! It is so much easier to have the motivation to get out when the weather is nice, isnt it. Im trying to up my walking and speed and as it was so warm and sunny today I was pounding the pavements Grin

Tambourinetunes · 16/03/2021 20:19

You are inspiring! I can relate to what you say. I was beating myself up mentally for months and couldn’t celebrate or even see my progress. You are doing something that not many people will do, it isn’t easy, it is hard work to build motivation, discipline and consistency to make changes and it doesn’t offer instant gratification (like food can in my case) I hope in time you can accept the praise you really deserve it. Doing something to make a change is not the easy option.

5foot418stone · 17/03/2021 10:25

2:52 without stopping this morning.

Another brilliant day! Love those pics too. You have epic big skies there.

Typical that the sun comes out when it's time to go home!

You're a star ⭐️

Thank you for the photos x. For 20 something years I lived in walking distance of some beautiful beaches. Never more than half a mile away.

I now lived a 2hr drive from the nearest bit of coast and it kills me. I want the beach!!!

Did you realise you hit your goal on day 6??? (Hit to the top without stopping & didn't die). So what's your next goal?
(Definitely get it all under control in your 40'd/ it's SO much harder after that!!)

5foot418stone · 17/03/2021 19:27

I'm hoping that after 8 weeks I'll be a fair bit faster and not be gasping and panting when I get to the top. I'll accept slightly out of breath! But now it is a bit embarrassing.

I wish there was an average fitness person who would time themselves and then I could work towards matching their time!

You're doing so brilliantly. Aren't we lucky to live in such lovely places we can walk to right from our doorstep? Here's my (not quite) daily stomping ground

That's really lovely Atreus!

I'm feeling so very tired and sluggish today but I'm just about to put my boots on.

Bravo , OP, on all your walking. It's such a good thing for both your mind and body, enjoy the effects. Lovely to see the little changes of spring when out this time of hear too ! I love seeing that.

Sidewalksue · 18/03/2021 09:37

I hate those steps. Even when I was doing loads of running I still found them hard.
There was one day I promised myself we would get the funicular up and was really looking forward to it, of course it was broke!

When I was a teenager we used to make everyone get out of a car to drive up the hill as no ones crappy car could make it, it’s that steep for reference for anyone!

5foot418stone · 18/03/2021 10:23

Yeah, saltburn bank is quite steep, 25% gradient I think! You can always tell if someone is driving it for the first time 😂 especially if there's also a bus coming the opposite way!

I was thinking about walking up the bank after going up and down the steps, just for a little extra workout.

I don't think I have ever taken the cliff lift. I probably never will after seeing it break down twice! Stuck halfway up and they had to call out the fire brigade and mountain rescue to get everyone out!

5foot418stone · 18/03/2021 17:08

I did the steps in 2:30 without stopping!
