Morbidly obese - I want to walk up these steps...

This is a really long post, sorry, but I'd appreciate any advice/encouragement!

TL;DR: I want to walk up some steps without dying. How long to accomplish this?

4 years ago I was almost done with an 8 stone weightloss. Then stuff happened and I've gained it all back over the past 2-3yrs.

Rather than hating myself and resigning myself to living like this forever, slowly eating myself to death, I'm starting to try again. I've put my fitbit back on, got my streak going on MFP, etc. I know how to lose weight but I do struggle with motivation.

So I've set myself a goal.

There are some steps near to where I live and I want to walk up them without stopping and then dying at the top. They are utterly horrible, torturous steps and I want to conquer them. Currently I plod up them slowly and I have to stop 2-3 times. It's really quite embarrassing.

I won't be able to walk them everyday, maybe 3 times a week. I don't want to push myself too hard to start with because it's a surefire way to make me give up. Do you think I'd be able to accomplish this goal in 8 weeks? Or is that too lax?

It's these steps in Saltburn if anyone knows the area!

Oops posted too soon
Meant to say I hope you've noticed the changes in your surroundings whilst you've progressed up and down the steps. Being outside in nature is so good for us.

caringcarer · 06/07/2021 22:31

If you can get to the top only stopping twice now, I think you will be able to get all the way up without stopping in 6 weeks.

I'm still here, still plodding along!

I've got my steps time down to 1:45!

That's amazing OP - well done!

BikeRunSki · 12/07/2021 14:44

Oh I remember this thread from when it started!!
OP, you are amazing! I know those steps, they’re not nice. What ab excellent challenge, so brilliantly conquered!

Twinkie01 · 12/07/2021 14:53

Op you are bloody amazing, go back to the start of your thread every time you feel disheartened, and read your initial post, you've done so well, come so far in a short time.

When you have shit days put them in the fuck it bucket and wake up the next day with your positive head on. Don't dwell on it. You'll have chocolate days and days you don't reach you're goals but don't let them derail you.

Tambourinetunes · 12/07/2021 22:28

With a time like that you are doing more than plodding! Well done!

BritishSummertime · 13/08/2021 21:22

Hi @5foot418stone how are you getting on?

Tambourinetunes · 15/08/2021 04:59

I was wondering too! Especially with the challenge of summer holidays. I imagine the steps are much busier too.

5foot418stone · 15/08/2021 13:55

Hi! I'm still here. Still walking but not as much. I've been in a really bad place mental healthwise so I haven't lost any more weight. I'm trying to focus on the positives so I don't veer off track too much though!

Keep on keeping on. Try just to maintain weight, and do what you can regarding fitness. Your mojo WILL come back, and when it does it would be great if you can pick up roughly from where you left off. If you can just maintain for now, then you'll be doing amazingly x

TableSetting · 27/08/2021 07:33

Glad to hear that you are still walking despite issues. Remember that you have your online support team rooting for you. Hope you get out for a good walk today and that the sun shines.

Sidewalksue · 13/08/2025 22:04

I went to Saltburn today and this thread came into my head I didn’t even walk the steps. Just wondered if you kept it up OP.

5foot418stone · 16/08/2025 20:18

@Sidewalksue yes, I did! Not consistently for various reasons. I now weigh 11st and I've just started c25k. Walk about 70km a week. Still dread the steps even though I can walk them without breaking a sweat or even getting out of breath now.

That is absolutely amazing, OP!! 🎉🥳 You've overcome so much, quite remarkable!!

Sidewalksue · 16/08/2025 22:48

That’s amazing I’m so pleased for you! I’ve been getting fit so I would like to test how I manage it just now, although I don’t believe they will ever be easy.
Im so glad I asked!

flatteredfool · 16/08/2025 22:51

Awesome! Well done! Those steps look one hell of a challenge for even the relatively fit.

PorkPieForStarters · 16/08/2025 23:50

Those steps are killer (and the funicular never seems to be running when I'm there ffs) - what a great challenge and well done for everything you've achieved. You've inspired me to find my own fitness challenge!

Fitbeforeihit50 · 17/08/2025 00:19

Wow, well done OP! Full respect to you, I envy your tenacity.

Glad you've come back! You're bloody brilliant! I'm 97kg and need to lget down to 70 at least.
How are your knees. I had really bad knee pain. My physio, bless her, said I wasn't too fat but my muscles weren't strong enough to carry me! I've strengthened them up and the knees are a lot better.
I had been going to say do knee strengthening excersises to help but realised it was a 2021 post.

Anyway well done you!!

Musicaltheatremum · 21/08/2025 19:10

I was thinking I live very close to a big hill. Walking it every day or at least 5 x a week could be the push I needed. I already go to the gym 4 x a week but still eating too much
You have given me some inspiration. I'm 62 now and need to sort myself out.
