Morbidly obese - I want to walk up these steps...

This is a really long post, sorry, but I'd appreciate any advice/encouragement!

TL;DR: I want to walk up some steps without dying. How long to accomplish this?

4 years ago I was almost done with an 8 stone weightloss. Then stuff happened and I've gained it all back over the past 2-3yrs.

Rather than hating myself and resigning myself to living like this forever, slowly eating myself to death, I'm starting to try again. I've put my fitbit back on, got my streak going on MFP, etc. I know how to lose weight but I do struggle with motivation.

So I've set myself a goal.

There are some steps near to where I live and I want to walk up them without stopping and then dying at the top. They are utterly horrible, torturous steps and I want to conquer them. Currently I plod up them slowly and I have to stop 2-3 times. It's really quite embarrassing.

I won't be able to walk them everyday, maybe 3 times a week. I don't want to push myself too hard to start with because it's a surefire way to make me give up. Do you think I'd be able to accomplish this goal in 8 weeks? Or is that too lax?

It's these steps in Saltburn if anyone knows the area!

Sorry you were given abuse by these a**eholes, hope they get what they deserve. I have a bit of a cold this weekend so just doing gentle exercise. Don't think I could cope with any hills!
You will be seeing a real difference in your fitness soon.Flowers

Sunny today so it's really really busy and I didn't want to do it but I forced myself. Did it slow and steady with out stopping in 3:02.

Without stopping!!! Go Queen!!!

idkwtdo · 13/03/2021 15:57

You're so inspiring! I don't have hills around here but I'm now going to see how many times I can go up and down the stairs at home!

You're amazing- keep going!! Rooting for you Smile

Good for you op. A few years back I did the nspcc gherkin challenge, there was an 8 week training programme that was extremely helpful. I know your steps aren't 38 flights but following the training plan for a bit might help? I dont know how to add links but Google gherkin challenge training plan. Good luck with what ever you choose xxx

Italianmeringuebuttercream · 14/03/2021 09:42

Blush sorry I've just read your update. Absolutely brilliant! Well done you!!!

Congratulations.

as quick as possible or try to do it slow and steady but without stopping?

These are both great things to do and train your body in different ways. The body gets used to doing things so that mixing it up is an excellent way to extend the training. You could alternate those approaches til both are 'easy' as they will become so long as you continue.

At some point, you could consider adding in a few steps two at a time. 😀. Endless possibilities.

I'm really missing the stairs at work to my desk, five floors up. Quite a few people use them rather than the lifts and smile to acknowledge each other 'mountaineering'.

I had a break yesterday

I did it 2:53 today, had to stop once to admire the view.

Was absolutely dying by the time I got to the top. Feel a bit disappointed in myself but not really sure why.

Feel a bit disappointed in myself but not really sure why.

It would be good to observe whatever it is that brings in disappointment. Any kind of sport / exercise is as much about mental as physical discipline. If you can observe and bring into the open why you have this reaction, it would be totally worth it.

Life will be much more enjoyable without it.

All the best.

Good days, bad days. Meh. Sometimes the legs are just lead for no reason. At least you went and did it! Well done OP.

CrepuscularCritter · 15/03/2021 19:48

OP, I think you're a real inspiration. Determined, not allowing idiots to put you off, and making great progress with your goals. You're inspiring me to find my equivalent challenge. Sending power to your knees! Smile

5foot418stone · 15/03/2021 20:48

I really do appreciate all of the advice and support! I'm reading it all and taking it on board.

I think I was disappointed because it felt like such a horrid slog and I feel like I didn't push myself enough but my legs were definitely lead today!

I've been trying to get in my 10k steps every day and last week I managed 83k total so I'd like to make it to 85k this week.

Onwards and upwards tomorrow!

Cheering on all of you who are also working towards your goals 🥳

Amazing, I set myself little challenges as well, I find it really helps to have a focus other than calories.
Well done you are doing brilliantly x

Tambourinetunes · 15/03/2021 21:36

Well done! Some days are harder than others and it isn’t always obvious why. I Think, food/sleep and stress can play a big part in this. Keep going - you are doing so well in such a short pace of time Smile

SportsBlah · 15/03/2021 21:47

It's the days where it is hard that have the greatest effect. If it was always easy you wouldn't have the chance to work on your stamina and determination. Well done!

I'm not too far from you.

panickingpat · 15/03/2021 22:38

Well done. Saltburn is a lovely place, fully understand you stopping to admire the view.

You can do it! ✊🏼

5foot418stone · 16/03/2021 16:51

I did it in 2:41 with a very brief pause after 70 steps

PickAChew · 16/03/2021 16:52

That view, though. So worth it. Do you have good, supportive footwear?

PickAChew · 16/03/2021 16:53

👍

5foot418stone · 16/03/2021 17:07

I have great footwear, my knees are just struggling from carrying 2 people.

Hopefully improve once I've dropped a couple of stone!

I'm just about to take the steps to the top of the cliff

There's only 96 but I normally only walk down them!
