RED January 2021

Who's signed up for RED January 2021?
Formerly known as Run Every Day, now Regular Exercise Daily.

This will be my 4th year (I'll miss the t-shirt but dig out my oldies). I think with the state of the world, not only do I need it more than ever but my motivation is more fragile than ever too.

I aim to exercise outdoors daily. Lots of running, hopefully my outdoor classes continuing and some walking as active rest.

I'm also eyeing up Adriene's January series Breathe. I enjoyed Home at the start of 2020. I've lost my yoga habit at present though.

Managed a very slow stagger about yesterday in the snow - 1k tracked as a run, then gave up and walked the rest

Managed 8.5k going slowly through the snow up hill, but once I got up onto the top, it wasn't too bad with grips on.

Onlyherefortheconspiracies · 10/01/2021 12:26

I've kept going. Walked on Friday and doing Adrienne every day. Will run once my brunch settles. The snow has gone thank goodness.

GinnieHempstock · 10/01/2021 18:48

I’ve not posted since Wednesday, but I’m still going.
No formal exercise on Thursday as was running around at work all day, so did close the exercise ring on my phone. Then 30 minutes on the rowing machine Friday, 8km run yesterday and a 5.2km run today.
Was definitely a bit warmer today - got to the heady heights of 4 degrees.

Taswama · 10/01/2021 19:32

10 mins weights workout on YouTube and a walk with the family (plus Adrienne).

Chocolateteabag · 10/01/2021 22:56

Another quick 2k to get the papers
My legs seem to be holding up
Hopefully the snow will go this week as getting a bit bored with skidding about!

GinnieHempstock · 11/01/2021 20:57

Long, busy day at work so wasn’t in the mood for anything, but I’ve managed to do a 30min yoga session, so whilst not particularly energetic at least I’ve done something and definitely feel better for it.

Taswama · 11/01/2021 21:17

Lunchtime run with DP and yoga with A.
Aching thigh muscles from my 10 min weights workout yesterday.

Chocolateteabag · 12/01/2021 10:21

5k yesterday on an actual non-icy road
Might manage something similar today if I can get a homeschooling/work break at lunchtime

But Sad more snow forecast for tomorrow! Ffs - even if it doesn't stick it just means more mud to slip in for at least the rest of the week

Chocolateteabag · 12/01/2021 18:37

RED12 done! 5k on melted and refrozen snow ugh! But it's done!

Onlyherefortheconspiracies · 13/01/2021 10:56

I've kept going. I ran on Sunday and have been doing Adrienne every day. Starting to enjoy it.

BogRollBOGOF · 13/01/2021 17:37

Well done to those still going! It's past that first hump of tiredness from what I remember.

I've done a couple of runs so far this week but my mojo is still fragile with the homeschooling demands and I never did find running around my neighbourhood at night to be particularly inspiring.

I've signed up, I'm running every day. Although today my IT band is really sore 🥴

GinnieHempstock · 13/01/2021 19:32

I ran 5.4km yesterday, not done anything yet today, but will get on the rowing machine later.

Taswama · 13/01/2021 21:39

Had a day off Adrienne today and did a live yoga class instead.

Chocolateteabag · 18/01/2021 20:15

Quick update from me - I've managed to get out everyday
Although a couple have just been a quick 15 mins down to get the paper and back. The snow and ice have been a pain, yesterday and today I've just run on the roads.
New trainers ordered for the muddy tracks - so I'm hoping I can get to the more "inspiring" runs later this week (once we get tomorrow's rain out of the way!

BogRollBOGOF · 18/01/2021 23:28

I've got no consistency going yet, but I did just under 10k of a hilly then swampy route, and a 5 mile walk with a friend that evening.

Done just under 8k with a friend this evening. Third time we've done pretty much that route and we had less crafty walk breaks.

DS2 is up for doing C25k and has done w1.1 today darting around the park

I’m doing this but didn’t realise it was a “thing” I just thought I’d challenge myself. I get up at 5:40am (weekdays, weekends get up later) and do something. I am doing a mix of the lean fit programme on the Nike app which is like Hiit training, then running as well, on days when I am feeling tired I walk at a fast pace or do yoga with Adrienne.
I’m definitely going to carry on as it’s become a regular weekday habit now and I feel good all day - although tired and some days very achy.

RainbowCookie · 19/01/2021 18:37

I also bought a nice calendar and I colour in the day when I work out. I have a nice colour pattern going on so don’t want to mess it up by skipping a day.
I look at the calendar when I’m working and feel smug!

AuntieStella · 19/01/2021 19:25

RED is a fundraiser for MIND that has been going for several years now

redtogether.co.uk

They also have a free downloadable calendar to colour in (in 'normal' years you can also buy T shirts and shoelaces, and qualify for a fundraising medal)

RainbowCookie · 20/01/2021 17:22

Ahhh ok thanks, I’m not in the UK so hasn’t crossed over to us yet. Great idea for a fundraiser through, especially for MIND, I’m in a much better place mentally I’m sure largely due to exercise.

IRun4Me · 21/01/2021 08:16

Well done everyone for still going.
I’ve had to abandon as had to self isolate. Was fed up about it and then the thought of having to exercise inside was worse than not exercising. I’ll pick back up in a couple of days.

BogRollBOGOF · 24/01/2021 19:20

I've run two days in a row, helped by the snow. There's flooding in the valley restricting low-level routes, and it's good thst the mud has now snowed over!

They've been the most enjoyable runs I've had for quite a while, and it's felt good to run because I've felt inspired.

I think I crashed so easily at the start because normally life takes over in December anf I get a break from running, so that New Year mojo didn't kick in and I just felt depleted in the face of extra complications.

That little bit more daylight is also helping.

Yes, it's over a month past shortest day, and I notice the difference in light in the late afternoon

Just a snowy walk for me today - lovely, and surprisingly tired afterwards

Chocolateteabag · 25/01/2021 08:01

I've managed to get out every day - even if some of those "runs" are a quick 1.5 miles round the block (if that was enough for Ron Hill - it's more than enough for me!)

The ground here is so icy that I've found it quite jarring on my knees. Hoping for some softer thaw days soon!

AuntieStella · 28/01/2021 10:07

I've just come in from a little run round the block - 2 miles and woefully slow, partly because of needing to cross over, but still preferable to trying to run where I usually do - round park, which is currently boggy/waterlogged so paths overcrowded (and not helped by people walking 5, yes 5, abreast and not budging over even a bit, making an impassable clump)

I haven't made the fitness gains I had hoped for when the month started, but so glad I'm sticking with it!
