Anyone up for a bit of half m support?

I'm registered to run my first half m in early September.

I'm struggling a bit with motivation tbh. I think I peaked too soon - could have done it 6 weeks ago. I've got time to get prepared though - it's 8 weeks away and I'm not starting from scratch. The most important thing for me is to keep up the strength work or my knees go kerboom.

Anyone else?

As the years creep up on me I have started doing a warm up and always stretch after. I now also do 2 strength training sessions at home, certain stretches every night and foam roll obsessively. Who knew running was so much work!

Evening all,

haven't been posting much as I have frustratingly injured my ankle, so haven't run properly for a couple of weeks. Have purchased an ankle support on advice from a physio so am going to attempt a run tomorrow morning.

Some of you are doing amazing runs - well done. I am going to try and get back on track with the My Asics App and the plan it has for me.

mammymammyIRL · 02/08/2017 18:42

I went out this evening after work with heavy showers & escaped all of them! Had intended doing another mini loop to add another half mile to this but want to see ds too (he's much better thanks he's a puke it up & get over it kind of guySmile)

I only had music & no pacing in my ear & it didn't make any difference to my time, it was also a new route.

Downloaded Spotify today it will place music to the tempo of your run, I wonder does it play through runkeeper?

I don't stretch either but starting to notice my calves tight about a mile in so must start Grin

Glad ds is feeling better mammy
I've been playing netball and doing hi it classes all the time I've been running Blush ivev stopped the hiit classes and one netball session for the holidays as I've just not got time and I need to concentrate on running for now.
I think I need to keep up fartlek runs but I do one or two then don't do them again, I also think a regular park might help as I need to push myself out of my comfort zone and actually up my pace!

minesapintofwine · 02/08/2017 20:52

Lol at all the knee cracking bleurgh!

Hoolit you sound super fit!

gandolf sorry about your injury that sounds so frustrating.

mammy glad your ds is better!

My intended 10miles was 8.5 miles when I got back but actually don't think I could have run another step anyway (bodes well for 13.1 miles not!)
I got absolutely soaked it was pouring down!

But I do feel loads better than last week's long run thank you for all the nutritional advice it really helped. I feel pleasantly tired too tired to empty the dishwasher not pukey so I am pleased. Just hope I get a good nights sleep not the usual post run insomnia.

The next week I'll be squeezing runs in around a wedding and a mini break to Legoland.

mammymammyIRL · 03/08/2017 05:45

Pint I'm going to sound like such a vitamins nerd now but this & Ginseng are literally only two things I take. If I take magnesium(comes under brand mag365 calmag) I wake rested after my nights sleep. See pic attached, last night was only night I took it & the blue lines are restlessness & pink is awake time, restlessness reduced from 11-4 having taken magnesium & that was after a run too.

Had planned to go this morning too but it's wet cold & miserable & I don't want to spend day at work after that.

Well done on your long run mine I'm going to do 6 miles on sat eve or sun & start adding 1.5 miles per week then.

I added fartlek to end of my run yesterday & survived!!

I love saying farleks.

I had a decent sleep! Well, I would have had my cfn not been playing the radio/TV loud all night. But it was a much better recovery than last week.

My feet are sore/tired/achy Brew

minesapintofwine · 03/08/2017 08:40

Fartleks

mammymammyIRL · 03/08/2017 09:28

I'm going to add fartlek training onto last half km of each run I do to try improve on my speed.

Have my running gear in the car and my dm is coming to visit this evening so I'm going to get a run in before coming home!!

HRHPrincessMegan · 03/08/2017 09:45

My eyes water at the sight of foam rollers but will try to be disciplined about using one if it will get me through the next 7/8 weeks.

How many times is everyone running a week? I'm trying to follow a schedule I found online which consists of 1 short run, 3 medium distance which build up to a max of 6 miles and 1 long run to which a mile is added each week. This Sunday will be a 6 mile run.

Hoolit · 03/08/2017 23:03

It's hard isn't it trying to fit runs in around life and stuff!
You get on an even keel and cranking up up the miles then a busy work week or something crops up just missing one or two outings is enough to knock you off kilter.
My next run is Sunday and I find I'm much better if I have a couple of days rest beforehand, fingers crossed I manage 8 mile.
Adding fartlek on the end of a run is a good idea I might try that!
HRH I aim for at least 3 runs a week one long and one hill and the third anything I can muster!

mammymammyIRL · 04/08/2017 07:25

It is so difficult isn't it hoolit I think it's because you haven't paid membership for it, if you had there's no way you'd miss a session because it's paid for and it'd be a waste of money.

I went out this morning just did 2.25 miles due to time constraints & it dawned on me that for two of the next three weeks I can't run in the mornings before work Sad my au pair is away and I won't have childcare until I've to leave for work Sad Will book my evening slots with dh Hmm

hrh my goal is 4 times per week but they're 2.5/3 mile runs and a longer one at the weekend. There's a 10k on at the weekend, not sure whether to do it or be conservative and do the 5k.

shortaris1 · 04/08/2017 07:34

hoolit I've only been getting out twice but that needs to change!

wine I had boiled eggs but obviously need more. I felt rotten til Tuesday, like I had a hangover as a pp said.

Deepfried I'm doing Glasgow too.

Rankellior · 04/08/2017 08:06

Just catching up on this week's action. Been manic at work but managed two runs earlier in the week and the yoga and spin since. Got up this morning for a run with the dog and my knees are gone. I can walk but can't even jog. HRH id be interested to see what your instructor says - my yoga instructor just said it's common. Feeling very disheartened and bleugh now.

Rankellior · 04/08/2017 08:07

Oh and I look stupidly overdressed for a dog walk in all my Lycra now. Thankfully it's early and not too busy

DeepfriedPizza · 04/08/2017 08:44

I can't wait until the kids go back to school so I can get back into my routine again. I only work 3 days a week so the other 2 days I could fit in a run but Summer has put a spanner in those plans.

Managed a run on Wednesday just to make sure my knee was ok and did some intervals last night.

I've also just ordered 2 new pairs of capris as i was struggling with the only 2 pairs I had.

randomsabreuse · 04/08/2017 08:58

I usually do 3 weekday runs plus the weekend - Parkrun plus a longer run. It helps that I need to "book" run time with DH so he is in charge of DD, plus my running club coach has me on Strava so can check which drags me out when I am really not feeling it...

Accountability helps me - and having a weekly mileage target to hit as well. Later today I need to do 4 miles as I need 20 this week and have total warrior 10 miles on Sunday!

Tuesday seems to be my most difficult day - partly timings as DH has a bike club so I either have to go out first thing or really late - and partly feeling knackered!

mammymammyIRL · 04/08/2017 08:59

rankellior sorry to hear your knees are giving trouble. Dh had to stop running when we started c25k in 2010 because of his knees. He's interested in trying again now after our colour run.

I reached 5000 steps by 7am this morning, it took until 7pm yesterday to achieve the same.

Pikachuwithyourmouthclosed · 05/08/2017 04:37

I ran! 22k - it wasn't the prettiest, but I ran the whole thing. Am noticing a dull ache in my crotch after about 16k - reminds me of pregnancy. Anyone else experiencing this?

No rabbits on the road this time but I did find a lost Labrador and called the owners (number on collar tag). Fortunately they weren't far away.

Question for you all - what time are you hoping to do it in? I was thinking 2 and a half hours would be reasonable. Is that eally slow?

Can I join ? Have ran halves in the past (10 years ago) life got in the way. But I'm now slowly getting back into it. Long term goal is to run a marathon keen to start with a half first. This week I've done
Mon - boot camp (small run there and back - maybe 1-2 miles both ways)
Wednesday - spinning
Thursday - 5k
Friday - 7k (was before work and struggle with energy in the morning)
Saturday - 5k (was complete hell, could have cried)
Any tips ? Would love some advice !!

wineusuallyhelps · 05/08/2017 07:25

I'm about to go and run 9 miles - if I can!

My half is on Sept 17th. I would like to do it around the 2.20 mark, like I did two years ago. I certainly won't be able to improve my time, as I'm not as fit as I was then!

mammymammyIRL · 05/08/2017 08:32

Pik the half I've booked stipulates a finish time of 2.5 hours & I was wondering if it's achievable. Now I think it is as even on runs I find hard I'm achieving 11 min miles and most are under it.
22k is a half!! Star you've done it ✅

Welcome 36+
Wine enjoy your run

I'm not running this morning as dh working, he's agreeable to me doing evening runs while au pair is away Shock in theory anyway Smile

I was debating a local fun run tomo but instead I'm going to save my money & just do same distance myself Smile

Pikachuwithyourmouthclosed · 05/08/2017 11:26

OMG.

I thought a half was 24k.

I've been trying to work towards 24k.

Mammy your comment has sent me googling and it turns out it's 21.1k!!! I've been worrying about how I'm going to manage it in under 2hrs 30mins, and it turns out I already am. On steep hills. With dog rescue thrown in.

I'm such an idiot.
