100 Miles by Halloween (Run/Walk/Cycle/Hop etc.)

NB: suspect this should rightly be in a fitness topic but wanted folk to see it - happy to ask MNHQ to change it if need be.

Would anyone like to join me in a fitness challenge to do 100 miles by Halloween, of your chosen sport?

I have just started running and want a challenge that's doable but challenging for me. I can currently do 2 miles on a good day, but to do 100 miles would need to sustain this (and improve) over the next 10 weeks.

So I wondered if there was anyone out there who is improving their fitness and starting out cycling or jogging or hiking (or even swimming!) and wants to hang out here?

I'm guessing this is more appealing for novices like me but heck, anyone's welcome.

I'm not using a pedometer because they're not too accurate for runners apparently, but using websites that enable you to track your route and work out distance travelled. I'll find some links if anyone's interested.

If so: my name is RunFatGirlFun, I'm overweight and unfit and getting old, and today I ran 1.5 miles, and I have 98.5 miles to go!

I'm in too. I will be doing some of mine on the wii board,I believe 4000 steps are 2 miles which I can do in 30 mins in front of corrie. It logs what you do so I can keep a record. I will put an app on my phone too.

kelda · 19/09/2013 08:38

whatkungfuthat -welcome! Love the idea of exercising in front of the TV.

whatkungfuthat · 19/09/2013 10:11

Thanks kelda, when I was really 'on it' I could do 10 miles a day on the wii. It's weatherproof and you can do it in your knickers Grin

kelda · 19/09/2013 11:07

As long as you have the curtains closed!

PinkyCheesy · 19/09/2013 13:36

Welcome WhatKungFu Smile

I wish I'd done my exercise in my knickers at home today! I cycled to a nearby park, met some friends and went for a 3.5mi walk (with geocaches). Half way round it started raining. And of course I had to cycle home again. I am drenched!! Now in a hot bath with coffee and cheese + crackers before braving the rain again for the school run. And I notice that there's water running down the wall again - from a flashing on the roof that needs sorting out. Aaargh.

Anyway, 5mi biked and 3.5mi walked
87mi total! Only 13 to go Grin Grin Cash I go back to bed then and hibernate?

ScottishInSwitzerland · 19/09/2013 17:18

Wow well done pinky
And welcome kungfu

I did 4.5 miles today so 70.5 in total. I am always a day behind kelda Smile
I need to go out and do a five mile run (in my dreams!) in addition to my walking to try to catch up!

ScottishInSwitzerland · 20/09/2013 16:23

7.5 today so that's 80 in total.
I think I'm looking good for 100 in September.
October may be a different story as I'm on holiday for a week in the middle.

ScottishInSwitzerland · 20/09/2013 16:25

Actually my maths is rubbish. 70.5 + 7.5 is 78, not 80!

kelda · 20/09/2013 16:31

Scottish I'll have given up by october! You have definitly overtaken me.

feetheart · 22/09/2013 09:51

Finally back on after Great North Run a week ago (can't believe that this time last week I was wandering around at the start and was SO nervous :))
Run was amazing - fantastic support along the route despite the cold, windy, damp weather, yelling 'Oggy, Oggy, Oggy' through all the tunnels, hail over the Tyne Bridge Shock, 56,000 other runners often with heart-wrenching reasons for running, the Red Arrows flying over just as I turned onto the seafront at South Shields and I took 2 mins off my previous time. Even getting SOAKED after finish and the 90 min wait for the Metro couldn't take the shine off a fabulous day. Desperate to sign up for next year :)

Haven't run since but did an Aquafit class on Friday and have a gym induction tomorrow. DH is away until Tuesday night so no early morning runs until at least mid-week.

Stats now look like:
13.1 miles :)
58.4 in total
41.6 to go

kelda · 22/09/2013 10:40

Well done feetheart!

EauRouge · 22/09/2013 13:22

No time for running (or eating!) this week due to new dog, but have managed to rack up 6 miles in walking. I've given myself extra brownie points for doing it all with large toddler DD2 in the back carrier. So now I have 76 miles to go. I might not make it before Halloween but I like keeping count anyway Grin

ScottishInSwitzerland · 22/09/2013 17:41

Well done feetheart.
And congratulations on the dog EauRouge is it a puppy?

I did 4.5 miles yesterday and 6.5 today so I'm racing along.

I think that's 89 miles done. Although my maths seems to let me down even on simple sums!

whatkungfuthat · 22/09/2013 17:46

I've only done 6 so far, it all starts in earnest tomorrow.

kelda · 22/09/2013 17:53

End of week 3, and I've managed 81.5 miles. I have been consistant every week walking a bit more then 27 miles.

EauRouge · 23/09/2013 06:35

The rescue thinks she's about 8-10 months so still not quite fully grown. I expect we'll be doing some longer walks in a couple of months!

kelda · 23/09/2013 16:45

Eaurough - you certainly get extra points for carrying a child! Do I get extra points carrying the shopping?

I think these last 15 miles are so are going to be a struggle. Ds is home sick with croup and I can't get out and do what I need to do. And I think I'm going to get sick too soon.

'Ey up Centurions! 6 more miles down (not in one run, sadly Grin) which takes me to 79.5 to go.
I better get a move on too, by the looks of things!

I have an announcement to make: MY LEGS HAVE
MUSCLES IN THEM. I saw them move! I swear! Sadly I think I need to lose about 2 stone before they're properly visible through my thigh fat, but hey, it's all progress.

Good luck everyone and sympathies to those whose lives are getting in the way of things.

Oh and CONGRATS to feetheart - utter inspiration. I might ask your advice early next year about training for the GNR. I'd like to run it in memory of my Granny to raise funds for Macmillan, because they helped our family so much towards the end. But it's a long way before I can contemplate doing that - baby steps, quite literally!

Hope your Ds is feeling better kelda

Well done on the muscles run

We have had lovely weather which has encouraged me to walk lots. But I am coming down with a cold which I will no doubt use as an excuse to be lazy.

I did 4 miles yesterday and 6.5 today. So I think that's me pretty much reached target. 99.5 miles. I am conscious that none of it is anything other than walking. I really should take some of the motivation I have had to walk and make the effort to start running again.

PinkyCheesy · 24/09/2013 22:40

Working away at the weekend and no opportunity for exercise (I was too busy stuffing my face with free food!!) Managed a walk today in the country - lovely and sunny with the trees looking very autumnal and pretty. So glad to live here and not in a concrete city Smile
93mi done.... only 7 to go woohooo!!

kelda · 25/09/2013 12:36

Well done scottish and Pinky!

Ds is still sick with croup but fortunately dh and I have been able to arrange looking after him, but I haven't gotton much walking done.

RunFatGirlRun · 25/09/2013 12:44

Your poor DS, Kelda - hope it clears up really soon. Croup's quite frightening isn't it? (my sister's youngest had it earlier this year and it sounded terrifying)

2 miles run this morning, so that's me with 77.5 to go Hmm Get running woman!
