100 Miles by Halloween (Run/Walk/Cycle/Hop etc.)

RunFatGirlRun · 16/08/2013 09:59

NB: suspect this should rightly be in a fitness topic but wanted folk to see it - happy to ask MNHQ to change it if need be.

Would anyone like to join me in a fitness challenge to do 100 miles by Halloween, of your chosen sport?

I have just started running and want a challenge that's doable but challenging for me. I can currently do 2 miles on a good day, but to do 100 miles would need to sustain this (and improve) over the next 10 weeks.

So I wondered if there was anyone out there who is improving their fitness and starting out cycling or jogging or hiking (or even swimming!) and wants to hang out here?

I'm guessing this is more appealing for novices like me but heck, anyone's welcome.

I'm not using a pedometer because they're not too accurate for runners apparently, but using websites that enable you to track your route and work out distance travelled. I'll find some links if anyone's interested.

If so: my name is RunFatGirlFun, I'm overweight and unfit and getting old, and today I ran 1.5 miles, and I have 98.5 miles to go!

Have done a further 7 miles this week and still hoping to do 2 more tomorrow.

Thurs - ran 3
Today -power walked 4
Tomorrow (hopefully) - run 3

Adding that to the 10 miles done already gives me a total of 20 miles covered altogether. 80 to go...

ScottishInSwitzerland · 14/09/2013 23:02

Another 4.5 miles today. 48.5 down 51.5 to go.

I keep thinking I must get out and do a run but keep finding excuses. Mainly childcare, dark evenings and rain!

PinkyCheesy · 15/09/2013 01:38

Many sympathies for your loss, Run Hmm I am impressed by your dedication to exercise though!

I did a 10 mile geocaching walk today (with 4 kids aged 5-11!), so i feel virtuous but my knees feel like I am about 106. Think I might be having a lie in on Sunday...

68mi done
32 to go Grin

RunFatGirlRun · 15/09/2013 09:29

Thank you Pinky. Hope your knees are mending - one of the reasons I started running was that my knee kept inexplicably giving way, and instead of seeing the GP as my poor DH kept insisting I decided I'd see if I could run it better Hmm - I'm sure that's a potentially dangerous route but it seems to have worked!

WELL NOW! Just had a run - the sun was shining, the cathedral bells were ringing, there were swans on the river and fellow joggers bidding good morning, and I thought, come on, Fatso, let's see what you're really made of - and I ONLY BLOOD RAN 5K!!!!!!!!!!!!! Grin Grin Grin

I am EXTREMELY pleased with myself (if you could see the size of me you'd understand) and demand a medal Grin

So that's 3 miles today
14.5 miles total
85.5 to go

Hmph, need to keep up this 5k business if I'm to make target.

Happy running/walking/geocaching/hopping everyone! And if you'll excuse me I am now going to spend the day lying down with the cat and reading the Booker shortlist.

I've just added up my weekly total, and it's 27.2 miles, which is exactly the same as last week! Even though I've walked to different places. I'm quite happy with that.

ScottishInSwitzerland · 15/09/2013 20:04

Well done run that sounds fab. I'm pleased you had such a good run to hopefully inspire you onwards.

I managed 5 miles today which I was really pleased with as I expected my weekends to be my worst time for miles walked. I've not been on a tram all weekend, and whilst I've obviously not been too far from home, I am really pleased with myself.

ScottishInSwitzerland · 15/09/2013 20:05

I'm past the half way point Grin

53.5 down, 46.5 to go. Yay!

kelda · 15/09/2013 20:28

Yay! Go Scottish!

I'm jusst passed the half way mark too - 54.4/100 - but rain is predicted all week and to be honest, my legs are tired! So might not make the same progress.

Was it the Great North Run today? How was it if you ran?

kelda · 15/09/2013 20:29

and well done RunFatGirlRun. Sounds like a lovely run. I'm so impressed with all you runners.

ScottishInSwitzerland · 15/09/2013 21:27

I don't have as much time to read as I used to (too much time spent on mn maybe) but I'd be interested to hear your picks of the booker short list, run

RunFatGirlRun · 15/09/2013 21:43

Scottish - I read The Testament of Mary today. I don't know how they have the gall to call it a novel - it's barely more than a short story! - but it's very compelling and exquisitely written, although I had a problem with Toibin writing very consciously 'beautiful' prose to be the voice of a probably virtually illiterate country woman! Def. worth a read. I'll do Harvest next - it's supposed to be his best since Being Dead - and I'm really looking forward to The Luminaries.

And thanks for the support on the run everyone! I'm effing shattered this evening and no idea how I'll feel tomorrow, but I'm still v. proud of myself

I passed a display of the booker short lists on Thursday and was attracted to testament of Mary. But was unable to longer as I had the two children with me.

Little more than a short story sounds just my sort of thing at the moment!

RunFatGirlRun · 15/09/2013 22:03

Oh it'll be just the ticket for you, Scottish! Although a bit upsetting, in the obvious places...

What, does somebody die??

(Going straight to hell emoticon)

RunFatGirlRun · 15/09/2013 22:11

Oh dear, I'm lagging behind a bit after a busy couple of weeks. I've only done another 3 miles so still have 82 miles to go.

On the plus side, we have just adopted a dog so should be racking up the miles from now on.

PinkyCheesy · 17/09/2013 04:22

3.5mi on bike today. My legs feel a lot better after several hot baths Smile and I am seeing the chiropodist in the morning so my feet should feel like a 21yr old's again GrinGrin.

Well done on the running Run! I can't imagine running a mile, let alone 3. So do it for me Wink

PinkyCheesy · 17/09/2013 04:24

71.5 done
28.5 to go

And I am doing the 14wk weight loss thing - a lb a week until Xmas...

PinkyCheesy · 17/09/2013 14:33

5mi biked today. Lovely chiropody appointment but cycled home via a notorious local accident blackspot and sure enough there was an accident being cleared up there Sad There but for.. etc

NicholasTeakozy · 17/09/2013 17:04

Been a bit lazy the last few days (loads going on), and have only managed 11 miles since last Wednesday, so I'm at 101.8. No chance of doing any more till Thursday, but am going to try to do 10-12 miles then doing a series of nearby caches.

ScottishInSwitzerland · 17/09/2013 17:50

3.5 miles yesterday and 5 miles today.

So I am 62 miles down and 38 to go.

Still no running though! I have a possible slot on a Monday morning where I drop eldest at preschool and them could technically take my city jogger buggy (which I'm assuming due to its name is suitable for jogging) and have a run around the park with youngest in buggy. It was raining yesterday though so I chickened out.

kelda · 18/09/2013 09:46

I am two/thirds of the way - 66.6 miles down!

ScottishInSwitzerland · 18/09/2013 11:17

Well done kelda.

I'm having a lazy day today but I might try to do some miles this afternoon so you're not too far ahead of me Smile

ScottishInSwitzerland · 18/09/2013 20:06

Four miles today. So 66 in total. Kelda I'm on your heels Grin

kelda · 19/09/2013 08:18

GrinI've just reached the 70 mark - don't hate me!

To be honest, I didn't realise I walked so far. I haven't actually done much extra walking this month then I usually do.
