100 Miles by Halloween (Run/Walk/Cycle/Hop etc.)

RunFatGirlRun · 16/08/2013 09:59

NB: suspect this should rightly be in a fitness topic but wanted folk to see it - happy to ask MNHQ to change it if need be.

Would anyone like to join me in a fitness challenge to do 100 miles by Halloween, of your chosen sport?

I have just started running and want a challenge that's doable but challenging for me. I can currently do 2 miles on a good day, but to do 100 miles would need to sustain this (and improve) over the next 10 weeks.

So I wondered if there was anyone out there who is improving their fitness and starting out cycling or jogging or hiking (or even swimming!) and wants to hang out here?

I'm guessing this is more appealing for novices like me but heck, anyone's welcome.

I'm not using a pedometer because they're not too accurate for runners apparently, but using websites that enable you to track your route and work out distance travelled. I'll find some links if anyone's interested.

If so: my name is RunFatGirlFun, I'm overweight and unfit and getting old, and today I ran 1.5 miles, and I have 98.5 miles to go!

Right. Have unpacked most of the house now... have found my trainers and sports bra and joined the local gym. Off to do my first cohple of miles tonight. Got a bit of catching up yo do, but shd be do-able i think...

sassytheFIRST · 08/09/2013 08:38

Just got under 90mi at last. Am only counting miles run or built in extra to my normal walking so it's slow - might not make 100 by Halloween but will keep trying.

Roobot · 08/09/2013 08:39

We had moved internationally, btw... am not some slattern who had to take the house apart to find her gym kit Grin.
If we were counting boxed unpacked, i would be there already!!

I did five miles this morning and had grand plans of making the most of the dry weather this afternoon. But I ended up being lazy instead!

So 23 down, 77 to go

PinkyCheesy · 10/09/2013 06:50

After a lazy greedy weekend, I biked 3.5mi on Monday morning and walked 2.5 in the afternoon. And feel better for it Grin

54mi done, 46 to go!

kelda · 10/09/2013 06:53

I started this 2 september. For some reason I thought it was 100 miles in september! So I have been walking like crazy this past week. I don't run, or hop or skip, so I am only counting walking.

As of yesterday, 32.7miles/100 miles.

Can I ask, how are you all measuring the distance? I plot my route on google maps.

kelda · 10/09/2013 06:56

oh I'm taking up rollar blading too but I'm not going to count thatSmile

feetheart · 10/09/2013 12:11

A 3.7 mile run today - and it felt like Autumn at 6am
42.1 in total
57.9 to go

ScottishInSwitzerland · 10/09/2013 20:46

kelda I have an iPhone app called endomodo which runs o GPS and tells me how far I've walked. I think there are also sites online where you can plot your route and it tells you how long you've travelled.

I really like the app. The only thing is remembering to switch it on (or off if I get on public transport!). And it does eat my iPhone battery.

ScottishInSwitzerland · 10/09/2013 20:47

I managed 7.5 miles today (v proud of myself!).

So I'm 30.5 down and 69.5 miles to go.

kelda · 11/09/2013 07:03

Thanks Scottish. I don't have an iPhone. Google maps is good.

I managed 3.8miles yesterday. I'm not doing any extra walking - just the normal walking I would usually do - school, shops, library, work.

kelda · 11/09/2013 07:05

And like you Scottish, I am aiming for 100miles this month!

I have to admit though, I have a cold which is turning into a cough and I feel exhausted. I just want to catch the bus.

NicholasTeakozy · 11/09/2013 20:33

I have a Garmin Etrex which records distance travelled. I reset the trip every day and record what I've walked. Since the last time I logged on (pc problem-it's fixed now, thank fuck) I've walked 34.7 miles, including an unbroken 1 and 3/4 hour walk for 6.2 miles, so I have 9.8 to go for the hundred. I still get tired on hills, so I'm working on that.

feetheart · 12/09/2013 09:27

3.2 mile run this morning - last run here before Great North Run on Sunday (in the pouring rain and howling wind if the forecast is to be believed - eek!)
45.3 in total
54.7 to go

kelda · 12/09/2013 12:03

Feetheart - good luck on sunday!

ScottishInSwitzerland · 12/09/2013 20:53

Hope it goes well on Sunday feetheart

ScottishInSwitzerland · 12/09/2013 20:56

I did 5 miles yesterday and 3.5 today.

Our weather is turning and I know it will be a harder job to make myself walk when it's cold and rainy. Our public transport system is so great that its really tempting to just hop on a tram.

So, my running total is 39 miles down, 61 to go.

kelda · 13/09/2013 06:53

I know how you feel Scottish. My dh offered me a lift one evening this week but I insisted on walking, and got drenched in the rain, despite my raincoat.

Although it is almost always just as fast to walk then to take the bus in my town.

RunFatGirlRun · 13/09/2013 08:44

Morning everyone!

Apologies again for my long absence - I don't think I appreciated how easy it is to let things slide!

My lovely Gran passed away last week and I was then away in rainy Wales for a few days, so I feel as if I've had hardly any chance to do any exercise Sad BUT I know that if I really wanted to, I would.

Got back in the saddle (well, my running shoes) yesterday and did 2 miles, taking me to a paffetic 10 miles down and 90 to go.

I was HORRIFIED my hard yesterday's run was but am assured by DH that my fitness will recover quickly and I'm not quite back to square one!

I'll be travelling around for family/the funeral next week but need to make sure I don't keep making excuses for myself.

RunFatGirlRun Sad Sorry to hear about your Gran.

Well done for persevering and going for a run yesterday.

ScottishInSwitzerland · 13/09/2013 18:19

So sorry to hear about your gran run

I am certain that your fitness will return don't worry about that. Do you think the running might help you a bit? I used to like to go for a run when things were getting on top if me or I had something to think through...

Well, I did 5 miles today.
I am 44 miles down and 56 to go

RunFatGirlRun · 14/09/2013 17:09

Thanks for being so nice Thanks

Scottish I'm sure you're right. I was feeling a bit gloomy today but have been for a run and feel much brighter.

Feeling the colder air a bit today in my breathing (asthmatic) which slowed me a bit, but DH was with me helpfully pointing out that Seb Coe is asthmatic and the fitter I am the less likely I am to succumb to a chest infection this winter!

Only did 1.5 miles but with DH pace-setting which is great as I really pelted home the last 0.5 miles

So that's me into the 80s at loong last Grin

11.5 miles down, 88.5 to go.
