Right, lets find all the park runners we have on here. I did my first park run on sat.

I am very impressed with my time of 33.18 :) I am ridiculously pleased with myself.

So park runners, where are you?

So who's running this week? Anybody volunteering for the women?

I'm doing the local hilly parkrun and hoping to come in around 30 minutes.

MelanieCheeks · 15/08/2013 15:37

I've sent an email volunteering to be a helper this week. Weather forecast isn't that great.

Next week I'm EITHER doing a Colour Run OR a dog show, so no Parkrun then, and the following week I'm in Vegas Grin

IsThatTrue · 15/08/2013 16:10

What's a colour run melanie ? Oooh enjoy Vegas, I got married there last February, it's wonderful, can't wait to go back!

OP posts:
MelanieCheeks · 15/08/2013 16:18

A colour run is an American invention which is catching on here - it's a 5k run, you start in a white Tshirt, and at certain points along the way bystanders throw coloured paint at you. It's for charrridddeeeee, natch. And fun, rather than speed.

BUT the dog show would be little Minnnie's first opportunity - and while there are 5k and 10k runs every darn week, entry level dog shows aren't that common. So I think I should do that.

Anybody want my Colour Run entry? Belfast, Saturday 24 August?

IsThatTrue · 15/08/2013 16:45

Wow a colour run sounds fun :) I can't get to Belfast though so that's me out!

The dog show sounds great too though. Oh other people have much more interesting social lives than I! Lol

I've registered for my local Parkrun today. I'm planning on going this Saturday with my Dh. It'll be the first time for both of us.

IsThatTrue · 15/08/2013 21:25

Yay golden first timers are always welcome at parkrun. My DH won't can't parkrun with me as he scared ill beat him he has to look after the dcs. Grin

No parkrun for me this week - still on holiday - but I've just totted up that I've run 50-odd miles on holiday over the last two weeks. Mostly on deserted beach/woods/coastal path looking at the sea and sky.

I will be trying to recall the solitude when I run my marathon with thousands of other runners in November.

Newrowsees · 15/08/2013 23:28

Ooh exciting, a place for parkrunners! I've only done 3 so far but I think I'm a bit addicted now, despite not being a runner in any way.

I've found a really good course about twenty minutes away and it's got a really nice café and playground so DP and the DCs can have a fun morning out as well. Did a 26:something last week, aiming for under 25 this week - cant wait for Saturday!

IsThatTrue · 16/08/2013 04:32

ohone 50 miles! Cor blimey guvna! Well done. It's lovely running near the seaside isn't it. Wish I could do that every day.

newrowsees welcome. Indeed I know many people who become slightly addicted to parkrun. Although I'm not sure about this 'not really a runner' business if you did 26min! Shock I haven't got a sub 30 yet and I'd call myself a runner although still carrying at least 29lbs extra weight, 21lbs down already from where I started though

My husband comes home from India tomorrow so sat morning he shall be spending quality time with ds2 while I parkrun :)

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 16/08/2013 10:25

Good grief newrowsees Grin

Welcome to the thread, and welcome home Mr IsThat.

EauRouge · 16/08/2013 11:44

I would love to manage a sub-25 min, it'll take me a while though!

I was hoping to run tomorrow but I feel like crap. Does anyone else not feel like running on their period? It's not just the pain, it's the dizziness and nausea and generally weak 'bleugh' feeling. All I want to do is lie on the sofa and stuff my face with starchy carbs :(

IsThatTrue · 16/08/2013 11:51

eaurogue I haven't had a period since I started running (still bf ds2) so I've no idea, but I do find I have days where I feel shite and if I still go I feel a bit better after a run. Although if you're feeling dizzy lazing on the sofa sounds like a much better idea.

I'm doing my first ever parkrun tmrw with the kids (11 and 8). I finished c25k last month and have been running 5k on my treadmill. I've registered and nearly fainted when I saw there are about 350 runners at my park run and the first 100 people are finishing in under 20 mins. Wtaf!!!

Kids are excited and I have ore warned them that my run is at their walking pace. I'm a bit nervous of them speeding ahead without me but they know the park well and have promised to stick together. Please wish me luck. I'm seriously bricking it.

MelanieCheeks · 16/08/2013 13:37

baking you will be absolutely fine! Dont worry about where anyone else is finishing - those sub-20 minuters are all SERIOUS runners.

Well, I'm officially marshalling tomorrow, in a fetching high-viz vest Smile

IsThatTrue · 16/08/2013 13:47

baking welcome to the parkrun family. You will be fine. Don't worry about anybody else's times. The only person you compete against in a parkrun is yourself.

Good on you for marshalling melanie I can't volunteer this week but hopefully can next week (although I'm hoping to volunteer and run of possible).

That reminds me I must hunt out my barcode.

OP posts:
Knackerelli · 16/08/2013 14:02

Yay baking! You'll love it. Mine is a smaller parkrun to yours; about 100. Most finish between 15-17 mins Envy just enjoy being there, the wind in your hair and hopefully not the rain on your face!!

Bakingnovice · 16/08/2013 16:15

Thanks for the encouragement. Can anyone tell me where the hell you keep your barcode? Ds suggested in socks but don't want to pull a soggy sweaty barcode out at the end of the race.

To prep for tmrw we decided to have a really healthy day. Started by skipping breakfast and having 1000 worth of butterkist sweet popcorn for lunch! Note to self: reign it in ya silly caaaah.

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 16/08/2013 17:23

Bakingnovice - some people at my parkrun keep their barcodes in a small plastic bag (e.g. a sandwich bag), and safety pin it to their shirt.

I have one of these, which I keep on my keyring.

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 16/08/2013 17:25

Eau - sympathies. I also find it really hard to run at that time of the month.

BIWI · 16/08/2013 18:34

Newrosees what do you mean, you're not a runner?! You sound like one to me!!!

Did anyone see Mo Farah win his 5K race this afternoon? With a winning time of 13:26.98 ...

BIWI · 16/08/2013 18:36

I've just had a look at my local Parkrun and it's a bit depressing really. 354 runners, and 288 of them managed the 5K in less than 30 minutes.

And I thought I was doing well

IsThatTrue · 16/08/2013 18:56

baking I put my barcode behind my phone in my arm strap. I have seen people put theirs in their socks though or the little pocket on running trousers/tops.

BIWI that still leaves 88 people running in over 30 minutes. You're doing amazingly just by getting out there and running at all!

Well I did a 10k today in 1hr 5 min so I'm getting faster, especially as I'm home and it's not as flat at the seaside! Lol. DH has agreed to have DS in the morning :)

My aim tomorrow is to finish in 30 minutes (or less) and to run the big hill in the middle. We shall see how well that goes. :)

OP posts:
mollycuddles · 16/08/2013 18:56

Biwi - you are doing well. The only person you're competing against is you.
I'm around 35 at the moment. I got to 28.52 last year but have got fat so times have gone up. Keep on running and be the best you can be.
I've friends through parkrun and my club who are sub 18!!!
One of whom hugged me after my 6.5 hour marathon and told me I epitomised all that was good about our club!
At parkrun when I'm being lapped my speedy friends always wave and speak to me telling me how well I'm doing. Runners are the most weirdly nice people I've ever met

I'm doing color run in Belfast on 24th August too. Might have someone who could take your entry Melanie. Which Belfast parkrun do you do? Would love to meet up and let you beat me :)

Standingonlego · 16/08/2013 19:20

baking occasionally they give out little laminating pouches at our park run. I covered mine in sellotape front and back and that worked :) I also have one that I printed randomly on photo paper in the printer and that works well too and does not run in the sweatiness (nice).

We have about 200 at my park run and over 25% are 30 mins or more. It really is a spread of times, you are only measuring against your own progress :)

Good luck to everyone running tomorrow morning, look forward to run reports afterwards :)
