Does anyone want to join me. Its my third attempt started today.

The first time I got pregnant mid way through. Second time was the start of the year and it was too snowy and cold and I was ill.

So psyched myself up again.

I need some company.

I made it! Thanks for the helpful words.

Movingforward123 · 16/09/2012 10:00

Hi everyone,

Well last week I did week 1, I quiet enjoyed it, but on my Friday run was feeling abit rubbish! Then later in the day it because a full blown cold!! Now I'm feeling terrible and I'm wondering, do others run if unwell? I can't imagine me being very good tomorrow, but I don't want to miss a run. I run Monday, wednesday and Friday! I work Tuesday and thursday so I won't be able to fit another run in Sad and I like to start in the Monday as I feel it sets my week up in a good way!

So would you run I'd feeling unwell? Knowing that you won't do as well as you would if feeling better?

Habdab · 16/09/2012 14:01

Hello everyone. I am starting today with DD age 10. DD is super fit so I am hoping she will motivate me. I cannot run at all and have a HUGE belly so I am hoping it will help. Quite scared though!!!

AuntieBulgaria · 16/09/2012 18:22

Well done all for starting or carrying on. I had a big lunch today so it took a big effort to get up at 5.30pm and change into my gear - I have some new tshirts and Capri length running trousers - swishy but cause awful camel toe so keep having to hoik my tshirt down.

Halle - you have caught me up. Dh has been away and DD poorly so finished wk 4 on Tuesday I think, but only did first run on wk 5 today.

Including the warm down walk at the end, Map My Run reckons I covered 5.16k. I am a tiny bit dubious as the duration was about 34 minutes.

I can't breath in through my nose. I mean I can but I just don't feel comfortable doing it when I'm running. Anyone else a mouth breather?

AuntieBulgaria · 16/09/2012 18:23

Movingforward123; I ran with a cold, I felt massively better for about half a day and then also felt totally justified in going back to bed :)

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 16/09/2012 18:26

I'm a mouth breather, I think. With any exercise I find I can concentrate on breathing OR moving but struggle to do both at the same time - pilates was a disaster for me!

What kind of tops do people wear? It's getting a bit cold for my plain cotton vests and dp's t-shirts are all huge on me. I don't possess any 'normal' t-shirts. I looked in a sports shop yesterday but a vile plastic-looking hideous pink top was 35 pounds!

MirandaWest · 16/09/2012 19:15

I have a Nike top I got on eBay (short sleeve type that wicks moisture away supposedly) and a long sleeve similar one from Aldi. Also a running jacket again eBay for when it's colder.

Tomorrow need to cycle into nearest town (about 5 miles away) and do things and hopefully get back in time to do my run before getting children from school. Have worked out how to do my podcast and use the Nike plus thing together so will be able to finc out how far and how fast (or slowly) I am actually going....

AuntieBulgaria · 16/09/2012 19:16

Remus - I got my Nike top from TK Maxx for a tenner I think.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 16/09/2012 19:55

Thanks both - will look in TK Maxx.

HalleLouja · 16/09/2012 20:05

I did the first run in week 5. How the heck I am going to run 20 minutes straight by the end of the week I am not sure.

I have a long sleeve top from sportsdirect.com. I have a running jacket if I go out in a short sleeve top. Its karrimor.

Well done the rest of you.

Well I think I might give it a try, normally I would never even consider exercise if I am feeling unwell!

I was wondering how others breath actually, a friend told me, two breaths in through the nose and one out through the mouth! I tried it on my runs and I think it helps. But it is also annoying to breath like that Confused

HalleLouja · 16/09/2012 20:15

I just breathe. Don't think about the breathing apart from the fact that it can be really hard to do so whilst running.

hi movingforward good to be at exactly the same stage as someone else! Although I wimped out of my Friday night run & did it last night instead. Should have gone on Friday because I stumbled into a couple of potholes in the road & seem to have buggered my ankle. Although I haven't jarred it for a couple of hours now so perhaps it's ok now. Can also feel the old shins starting to get tender. This is not good & if anyone has any tips on avoiding shin splints I'd be grateful to hear them - particularly any stretches that target the area. I have quite enjoyed it this week - ok so I'm running & hurting & struggling to breathe (two breaths in,two breaths out. Both thru the mouth because I can't concentrate on putting feet in front preach other & breathing unnaturally),but it is time to myself. Time out of the house without a toddler or a puppy to worry about. As much as olive them,I am enjoying the little bit of headspace I get when I'm pounding the streets at night.

Movingforward123 · 17/09/2012 10:13

tucking did you run today?

I did even with my cold and I am really glad I did! Normally I would wimp out of whatever exercise I had planned for the day!

I am seriously considering starting shred too. Is anyone else doing both?

As i feel the running is great for improving fitness but shred would help me get in good shaper quicker! But shred also adds muscle and I need to get smaller not bulk il with muscle! Anyone for any wise views on this as I am confused Confused

HalleLouja · 17/09/2012 11:48

I am thinking of shredding too but not sure where my DVD is. Maybe will order another one. Well done Moving for running with a cold.

OP posts:
HalleLouja · 17/09/2012 11:51

Not going to shred everyday though. Mainly when I am not working and DD is napping/

Movingforward123 · 17/09/2012 12:03

Thank you Smile

I was thinking of just shredding on running days so mon, weds, fri! Not sure how effective that will be Confused

HalleLouja · 17/09/2012 12:04

I think you would be best of doing shredding on days you aren't running. I seem to remember it hurts. I also do pilates to strengthen up.

tuckingfits · 17/09/2012 12:44

I haven't run yet - I have to run at night, although am wondering if I could plonk the boy in his pushchair & struggle along with that too,but it's very very hilly here & I'm not sure I fancy that...

Well done for running with a cold, hopefully it's cleared your head.

I did the shred for a few months & it didn't bulk me up,it toned & slimmed me. You'd need to be doing it with mega weights for it to.bulk you up I reckon. I also think it'd be best to shred on non-run days. That's my plan but I seem to using potential shred time (nap time) to sort the garden out for impending winter. It's so cold & miserable on west coast Scotland.

piprabbit · 17/09/2012 13:27

Shredding? Shock

I've just finished week 5 run 1 - my first foray into daylight running. At 6:30am it's commuters walking to the station, heads down and no eye contact. At 9am there are mums returning from the school run, potterers with dogs. I got far more curious looks today. Still it will prepare me for next week when DH is away and I'll have to run during the day.

There was a brief moment during the 2nd 5min run when everything came together and I just had time to think "Oooh, this is pretty easy. I could keep this up for ages" before I had to break my stride to avoid a pot hole and it all got hard again.

I'm interested to read everyone's breathing techniques. I'm a mouth breather, I feel like I'm suffocating if I try to breath in through my nose. NHS Laura suggests breathing in to a count of 4 steps and out to a count of 4 steps - I'll stick to gasping every other step.

I'm doing the occasional XBox Zumba session on the days I'm not running. Running seems to have improved my stamina but eradicated what little co-ordination I ever possessed.

Hope you all have a good week and that moving's cold and tucking's ankle feel better soon.

tuckingfits · 17/09/2012 13:43

Bloody potholes! I'm in two minds about going out tonight as I've just jarred ankle again. I'll give it a go though, with a support bandage I think. I don't want to stop!

MirandaWest · 17/09/2012 13:45

Am about to go out for week 3 run 1. Am going to try and work out how I breathe Grin

countingdown · 17/09/2012 14:29

I don't want to go out tonight Sad It is like winter here today, running in a bit of drizzle doesn't massively offend me, but it is throwing it down. And windy. I need to man up, don't I?!

I have been thinking about shredding on the days that I don't run, but not sure if I should get a bit better at running before I inflict any more exercise on my poor old body! Keep us posted on how it goes, Halle and Moving

Week 5 here I come...

piprabbit · 17/09/2012 14:30

You will be able to feel very, very smug when you get home after running in the rain counting. Think of all those lovely endorphins washing round your system!

countingdown · 17/09/2012 14:32

Hmmmm, I'm still not convinced!! But thanks!
