Anyone else training for a half marathon?

golemmings · 23/07/2012 22:25

I graduated from c25k earlier this year and ran my first 10 race in June. A friend has told me that I can do a half marathon in the autumn so I've signed up for one.

I'm a week into the training programme (using the rw one for 2:00-2:15 finishes) and I'm finding it really hard going.

Is there anybody else who is doing a half who wants to share moral support/abuse/highs/lows?

Thanks Lexi - looks good but full so maybe next year!

humblebumble · 02/10/2012 19:34

welcome "frazzle* you do sound like you could probably give us lots of advice with all your experience!
lexi thanks for the link, whilst I am not facing the same personal issues as that woman, the bit where she says "it helps me frame my days, giving me a purpose" definitely resonates with me.
Well done on getting out running again and good luck with TTC.

I did a 2 mile pace run today .. I think I was very a little over excited as I ran it waaay too fast and averaged 8'07 pace. There is absolutely no way I could keep that up for 13.1 miles.

I am going to have to find a way to moderate my pace in general, I can't seem to get it right ...

Only 2 more runs until the HM on Sunday! Yikes!

humblebumble · 02/10/2012 19:36

neither I have a bone to pick with you! after your post earlier this week I keep craving lemon and poppyseed cake Grin

KiwiPanda · 02/10/2012 21:58

Oi, that was my slice of cake runs in, snatches cake, runs away again

KiwiPanda · 02/10/2012 21:59

(Stupid iPhone posting with excessive bold text Blush)

golemmings · 02/10/2012 22:31

Evening all. Failed to run today. Was never going to go before or after work but had a late meeting, got home at 7, fed Boy... And then it was 8 and I wanted my tea. Will run thurs before work though.

Knqckered tonight. This working lark is hard!

humble, I'll bring you a slice on Sunday if there is any left Grin.

I haven't run since Sunday either lemmings, horrible weather here, cold and wet. Hope you get out tomorrow.

golemmings · 03/10/2012 19:15

I'm running before work tomorrow. We're having an extension built and they've taken up the drains. If I want a shower I need to go to work for it so I may as well run and earn it!

I ran this morning then a gentle 2/3 miles tomorrow then that's it until race day!

Have been in total denial about going back to work on Monday as have been just focussing on race. Now it's hit me. Oh GOD Sad

onedev · 03/10/2012 22:33

Great motivation Go.

You'll be fine Kiwi - all the best Smile

humblebumble · 04/10/2012 18:46

I just did my last 2 miles before race day on Sunday. It's funny to think that it is finally here. The last 12 weeks of training have gone by so quickly.

The forecast for Sunday a big temperature drop and is rain, cold, rain, cold, rain ... I guess it is an incentive to run faster, so I can be warm and dry quicker!

golemmings · 04/10/2012 19:11

Forecast for Sunday is 10c and dry. I'm dithering between shorts and long legs, vest or thermal or maybe vest and jacket. I'm due 3 miles on sat but I'm not sure I have time to fit it in.

Ran this morning and it was hard. It was 6c so I think the cold made me tense. I managed all of 3mi, averaging 9.22. It was hard enough to make me slightly worried for Sunday.

I know that come Sunday i'll be fine, i'll just get my head down and keep running. And I probably won't be last. The other races I've done I've come in top half. There's just a gremlin in the back of my mind which says there will be 195 elite runners and then me and 4 old ladies staggering along miles behind...

Grrr. Stupid brain.

Two days to go.. I'm travelling solo to Royal Parks on Sunday as DH has broken his ankle so will have to stay at home with the DDs. So if anyone wants to meet up for moral support...

Issy am I being really stupid?? It says on the big leaflet that the race colour number is the colour of your funnel.. But my race number is black?!?!! Blush am I being utterly thick..?

onedev · 05/10/2012 19:35

All the best ladies - hope you have fun & I'm sure you'll do brilliantly. Let us know how you get on.

Idocrazythings · 06/10/2012 07:48

Trying desperately to motivate myself to put down the coffee cup and go for a run- thought about trying a park run as I've not yet done one, just don't feel like hopping on two busses to get there. I also signed up for the Oxford half which is next Sunday!!! Eek

Good luck to everyone running tomorrow, look forward to hearing about them Smile

KiwiPanda · 06/10/2012 10:35

I've woken up with a bug and a minor temperature. Desperately trying to shake it by willpower alone but am utterly miserable. Months and MONTHS of training and I get a bug one bloody day before. Sad

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 06/10/2012 14:33

Morning all.

go - you won't be last!

Issy - enjoy! A friend of mine did the Royal Parks last year and it looks a lovely route.

Kiwi - sorry to hear about your bug and DH's ankle. Sending go away bug vibes and cake your way and hope it goes well tomorrow.

humble - I'll PM you my number. I'll be running in a blue and white vest (probably over something else, since the forecast is to be quite cold) with a picture of Pingu - I run for JDRF.

Idocrazythings · 06/10/2012 16:51

Oh no kiwi. Hope you're feeling better now!

humblebumble · 06/10/2012 19:54

Wishing everyone all the best for tomorrow! I can't believe it's finally here.

I woke up this morning with stiff legs, which is very strange as I haven't run since Thursday and whilst I did some walking around yesterday it wasn't excessive.

neither I just picked up my race number. I am in the pink corral. I'll PM my number to you as well. I have no idea what I am wearing yet, but probably an orange rain coat!

KiwiPanda · 06/10/2012 20:21

Am just about fighting off the bug I think!

Good luck to everyone tomorrow! See you here afterwards Grin

Lexilicious · 06/10/2012 21:55

good luck all the royal parkers !!

I fell off the wagon again, it was too rainy on Thu and Fri so I couldn't summon the enthusiasm. was hoping to do a longish one tomorrow but I am feeling rather flu-like (started with abdominal cramps and now my whole body is aching for no reason) so v unlikely.

will be checking in the afternoon and want to hear PBs and no transport disasters!

golemmings · 06/10/2012 22:25

Hang in there Kiwi...

I need to be up before 6 tomorrow and have 2 preschoolers fed and in the car by 7ish... that'll be hard work. Bags packed - with a complete change of running kit - shorts, longs, vest, thermal, jacket... no idea what the weather will bring.

Planning a pub lunch at a brew pub we used to frequent in the area...

It'll probably be mid pm before I get to report back. If my phone battery makes it to the end of the race I'll be impressed; I don't think I can ask anymore of it!

Good luck to the Royal Parkers and the New Yorkers!

Who else is running? Humble and Shredded are, and kiwi and Issy. Have I missed anyone?

Hope you're OK Lexi.
