Anyone else training for a half marathon?

golemmings · 23/07/2012 22:25

I graduated from c25k earlier this year and ran my first 10 race in June. A friend has told me that I can do a half marathon in the autumn so I've signed up for one.

I'm a week into the training programme (using the rw one for 2:00-2:15 finishes) and I'm finding it really hard going.

Is there anybody else who is doing a half who wants to share moral support/abuse/highs/lows?

All the best! Enjoy. Grin

KiwiPanda · 07/10/2012 12:53

Hello all. Made it. However I do not recommend running when you have a bug from your children as a gift to take with you. I think the chap whose shoes I narrowly missed throwing up on would agree.

Finished in 1.45. More than a bit gutted tbh as was aiming for 1.40 but I felt truly grim from 7 miles on Sad

Hope everyone else felt better!

onedev · 07/10/2012 13:38

Well done Kiwi Grin

Lexilicious · 07/10/2012 13:57

well done kiwi - I would think that's an amazing time but I know disappointments are relative to ability/expectation.

golemmings · 07/10/2012 15:28

Oh kiwi, but given the circumstances you did really well. Hope you feel better soon. We had perfect weather, cool and sunny, the scenery was lovely, there were a couple of points that supporters could get to so I had a surprise visit from DH and dcs at 6 miles. It was a new race. The atmosphere was friendly. Chatted to someone from mile 5-6 as we were both hunting down a pack from barnsley. They were aiming for sub 2 but their pacer split them and I overtook the slowest but lost the front at about mile 8.
Mostly my aim was to run it all and finish in sub 2.15. It wasn't a chip race so my start line to finish line time is 02:02:32. My official time is a little longer. I'm thrilled to bits!

Well done lemmings! Brilliant work. Sounds like a lovely race. Royal parks was beautiful course too though wasn't really in "appreciate scenery" mode.. I burst into tears when I finished but considering I, err, threw up three times and felt grim I am actually quite proud that I finished. My friends husband finished in 1 hr 21!!! Imagine being that fast. Whooosh!

Definitely not feeling normal still - was thinking should be scoffing cake but all I have managed to eat at all is brothy soup and a plum..

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 07/10/2012 17:48

Well done lemmings and Kiwi! Great results both of you!

I finished in 2:27, taking a whopping 15 mins of my previous PB Grin. I was actually more pleased about taking 10 mins off my 10 mile PB.

Sadly I didn't see humble - it was wet and miserable by the time I finished, and DH (who also PB'd, by 4 minutes) had been hanging around for 45 mins by then. So I had a little cry all over him (partly caused by the announcer at the finish calling me out for my charity - DS1 has diabetes, so running these races is always quite emotional for me) and then he got me to drink some gatorade, get some dry clothes on and go home. I was in no mood to argue Smile.

Humble, hope you had a good run and hope to see you somewhere less chaotic - have you signed up for any other races?

humblebumble · 07/10/2012 18:33

hello everyone!

Well done everyone. Especially Kiwi I can't believe you considered running it when you were feeling so awful.

I finished in 1:57 according to my Garmin. For some reason my result hasn't shown up on the results page which is disappointing. I assume that will be rectified over the next few days.

I was so pleased with my result, 10 mins faster than my other HM and I managed to crack the 2hr which was my goal.

neither it was so busy and cold and once I had managed to find DH and the DC we headed off. It was just starting to rain. I haven't signed up for anything else yet, I am trying to decide which one to do. I will need something to aim for.

wow, can't believe it's all over ... what's next?

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 07/10/2012 18:43

Brilliant humble! Sometimes the results take a little while to sort themselves out.

My next big one in Baton Rouge in January. Then the NYC in March. Then, as I just said on another thread I am retiring from my running career Grin.

KiwiPanda · 07/10/2012 18:55

I'm doing a 10 mile race in 2 weeks.. And shall be finding some more to enter tonight.

We are all mad aren't we??

KiwiPanda · 07/10/2012 18:55

Sorry posted too soon that's brilliant Humble! Check results again tomorrow as sometimes the first ones are provisional/glitchy..

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 07/10/2012 18:59

Mad in the nicest possible way Kiwi!

humblebumble · 07/10/2012 19:00

Baton Rouge sounds like fun. Perhaps I am thinking the after party will be fun ... Grin

I hope to get a place in NYC HM in March, but I was lucky last year so I am not sure I will get in this year. I may do the one in January instead as I think not many people will want to run it as it is usually freezing.

It's such a high when you finish ... I just have to be careful not to sign up to too many things as I am feeling invincible ... I probably won't feel the same tomorrow.

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 07/10/2012 20:10

The other thing about the January one humble is that a lot of people don't like paying to run 2 laps of CPark, when so many runners train there anyway. We had a complete nightmare, it snowed overnight and all the way through, so they did it as a "fun run" which meant we didn't get timed (though still got the credit). And they closed the race early so I didn't do the last mile or so. But that's what got us doing Brooklyn, because we wanted a timed finish, and one thing led to another...

I've just signed up to volunteer at the Poland Spring marathon kick-off.

golemmings · 07/10/2012 20:26

Go kiwi! 10 miles is such a civilized distance. I realised that today ... At 11 miles!

And well done humble and shredded. Good results - and nice pbs!

Am I the only one not feeling invincible? I'm tucked up in bed, feeling knackered and wondering if i'll be able to walk in future, let alone run?

My programme took me nicely to running a half but it comes with no advice re how to recover. I think I remember Lexi asking this a couple of weeks ago but my phone takes so long to load pages that I'm not sure i'll find it. So is it a few days off and then some short runs?

Well done everyone on your amazing times, something for me to aspire to!. I think I'm up next, next weekend, I'll be happy with anything under 2.30- bit nervous though as its my first.

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 07/10/2012 20:46

lemmings - try this link for some recovery tips Smile

golemmings · 07/10/2012 22:51

Ohh thank you. That's useful.

OP posts:
KiwiPanda · 08/10/2012 06:57

Well I clearly was a bit nuts to run at all - have been up all night with awful stomach bug. So much for my first day back at work! Will instead be spending it in bed (and in the loo)

How's everyone else feeling today? A darn site better than me I hope.

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 08/10/2012 12:23

Kiwi you poor thing.

I'm feeling OK (famous last words). I hurt my leg a while ago, and it's been sore for weeks. I didn't go to the doctor in case he told me not to run Grin. Something went ping around mile 12 yesterday, but I decided to ignore it since I was almost there. As soon as I finished I had to sit down, but today it doesn't hurt at all. I suspect it will do later! My aches and pains tend to emerge on day 2 afterwards.

My 20 years younger than I am colleague was running a different half yesterday so I'm looking forward to seeing her later and seeing how she got on. And a couple of the blokes ran the same half as me, so there will be plenty of half marathon chat today.

Issy congratulations! Your first HM and you ran it in 2:13, that's brilliant. It is definitely addictive. I said definitely no marathon for me but I am contemplating one next November depending on how my legs hold up.

I am feeling good today. I went to a bootcamp this morning. So I might not be feeling so good a later as there was a lot of squat work.

neither I think you are right about the Jan 1/2 I am not sure whether I will enter it or try and do something different.

kiwi I hope you are feeling better.

golemmings I hope you are feeling okay too.

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 09/10/2012 03:13

Well done Issy! Great time and glad you enjoyed it.

I had a half hour recovery walk this evening. I took my ipod, and could almost have broken into a run jog slightly fast walk a couple of times.
