Couch to 5k 2011 Part Four: Post even if you haven't run!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 19/10/2011 21:42

Yet more space for us to talk about our progress on the Couch to 5K programme, the stuff we wear, the music we listen to, the gadgets we use and our nail varnish.

New runners are warmly welcomed - come and give it a whirl, you know you want to! There has been a lot of success on this thread, both in the UK and internationally, moral support is abundant, and there is always a kick up the arse for anyone who needs one!

Some of us are on our second time round now, so don't worry that you will be behind, just jump in whatever stage you are at.

RebeccaMumsnet · 28/12/2011 11:20

I really want to run 5k by March.
Where/how do I start? I have spent a long time sitting behind a computer screen and eating MNHQ biscuits Can someone point me in the right direction please?

Kristingle · 28/12/2011 12:12

Hi rebecca

Just google c25k and downlode soem free podcasts onto your smart phone or ipod

Get a decent pair or running shoes and a sports bra and you're all set

5k by march perfectlly possible, the programmme is mostly walkimg at the start with short 60 sec or 90 sec runs. You want to do little and often.

According the the MNers on this thread you also need puprle polish. I dont know about that but soemone will come along soon to advise Grin

RebeccaMumsnet · 28/12/2011 12:42

oh thanks, downloaded! It's brilliant, although the music doesn't sound that great?

DH got me trainers and other running stuffs for Christmas so all set now.

What's the purple polish about?

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 28/12/2011 14:04

Well...do you have all day Rebecca? (Welcome to the thread!)

The purple thing is lost in the mists of time Grin, linked to shredding, scrunchies, hand weights and leg warmers and a certain poster's OPI wish list Grin. Team toes took the place of a masonic handshake when a couple of us met up for drinks earlier in the year. Some of us have purple hats too. But don't mind that, we're a friendly and encouraging lot. Let us know how you get on!

Kristingle · 28/12/2011 14:18

If you have an iphone or ipod i think you can downlaod an running world free app which allows you to use your own music but has a voice over telling you when to walk and run. I am sad blackberry person so dont know. There will be soem info down the thread.

ILOUminatedXmasTree · 28/12/2011 14:47

I have the Robert podcasts he is ace. Not sure about his taste in music but its good for running.

No longer sore and want to run again. Not sure what I am going to do once DH is back at work and it gets dark so early. Might have to do two runs at the weekend (not ideal) and go and see my mum or get her to look after DD whilst I run. Addicted moi?

I do have the shred dvd maybe I should start that too.

WhoKnowsWhereTheMistletoes · 28/12/2011 18:06

Hello, it's nice to see some new people joining in. There is another thread that has just started where everyone is just about to start together, a lot of helpful advice is being dispensed there too. I hope that doesn't sound unwelcoming, it's not meant that way at all, it's just that a lot of the useful stuff is a very long way back on this one whereas it is all posted in the last couple of days on the new one.

alternative thread

I have to admit there has been more chat about nail polish than running in the last couple of weeks, must get back to running soon! I have got yet another cold but I am determined to get out tomorrow.

sybilfaulty · 28/12/2011 18:43

Hello girls

I hope it might still be OK for me to post here - I have been rubbish and not been out since I last posted, but tomorrow is another year etc. The outlaws are coming for the NY and I need to get my arse in gear. I need to start again. Again. I think this is my 4th go at C25K so I might leave Rawbert and try Laura.

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday and i look forward to posting - and maybe even running - with you all in 2012.

Big love, Sybs XXXX

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 28/12/2011 22:06

Good one WhoKnows Grin. I popped on the the new thread to cheer lead and wave pomp poms, and saw you were there too. Hope your cold clears up.

of course it's still OK for you to keep posting here. I was just wondering about you the other day Smile.

I have just waved DH off into the cold for his run. I get to make the DS's tea instead, and it's soooo cold outside I think I've got the better bargain (I get to run tomorrow, at least it will be daylight when I go).

JingleNells · 28/12/2011 22:09

Hello sybil, how lovely to see you! I too am rubbish and haven't been out running, but still barge my way onto this thread saying I'm going to, and talk about nail varnish and no-one seems to mind apart from one or two bossy ones, you know who you are. Xmas Wink

Like you I am going to go out but have been inundated with lovely visitors this Christmas so haven't got round to it. But I am going to go. Definitely. Honest. Not sure about shredding though. It's still in it's cellophane.

shredded my little queen of OPI, how are you? How's the training going? What colour are your nails? Is your run 5th Jan? Hope you're having a lovely time with all your boys around you.

Kristingle well done on your parkrun, that sounds fun!

And welcome to everyone who has just joined the thread and C25k. I won't bore you with my journey, but will tell you it truly does work if you do it. I almost completed it once, and got halfway the second time so third time lucky when I start again. As it says at the top of the thread - you are welcome even if you haven't run. Which is why I'm here. Xmas Grin

Hope everyone's had a lovely time - here's to a productive, glittery 2012. Wine

JingleNells · 28/12/2011 22:14

Ooh shredded we were typing at the same time.

Linzer forgot to say that yes I did put the glitter over the top and it was truly gorgeoise. Today I have this China Glaze Starboard on which the DD's bought me for Christmas and I love it. Sans glitter though as it took me ages to get the last lot off. Grrrr. Are you back in Austria yet? I've just started reading the book you sent me. Xmas Smile

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 28/12/2011 23:09

Hello Nell!

my 10k is 7 Jan, and the big one is 21 Jan. I was going to PM you actually to let you know I'll be in blighty the 2nd week of Jan, and to check whether you (or indeed anyone else!) needed any essential supplies Grin. Let me know!

Training is non-existent, but am having a loooovely time with the boys instead. DS1 is taking me to Carnegie Hall this evening Grin

RatherBeOnTheMulledWine · 29/12/2011 09:00

Morning running chums. And welcome new chums. Rebecca - tis a well known fact purple nail varnish is an aid to successful running. Really!

Good luck to those starting. It really works but you have to stick with the programme. It is astonishing. But it works. And you feel so good! And quite smug!! Good luck. Grin

Did another shorter run and need to build up again. And I need new songs, well more songs to add to the classics. Any suggestions?!

WhoKnowsWhereTheMistletoes · 29/12/2011 10:08

Running Songs. I was looking at this on Amazon Pistey.

Just bracing myself to go out. Still coughing and wheezing though, so I'm not hopefully of a very good run, but it has been a week since I last tried and I am feeling blobby after Christmas..

RatherBeOnTheMulledWine · 29/12/2011 10:33

Maybe just a short one WhoKnows? I know what you mean about feeling blobby. I never normally sit down in the course of life but I have sat on my arse too much of late! Still out today, and going ice skating tomorrow. All vair jolly!

And PS, when I say running chums, that is ALL of you on here!!

WhoKnowsWhereTheMistletoes · 29/12/2011 12:19

Yes, just a short one, it ended up being half an hour but I walked most of the second 15 mins, I was doing OK till about 15 mins but had to stop to cross a road and got a massive coughing fit and never really got going properly again. Still, better than nothing. About to go and remove my purple nail varnish not, it is looking very tatty, I think I may go green, like Nell.

Well done to you Pistey for getting started again, especially at this time of year.

Linzer - I've finally finished Star of the Sea, it was actually very good, after an unpromising start. I did a little search of MN and found lots of people recommending it as a must read on various threads, I wouldn't go that far, but it was worth the effort.

Sybil - welcome back, it's lovely to hear from you. I have been fairly slack of late too, although I had a good run a couple of weeks ago I have been stricken by colds ever since and struggling with my lungs. I am hoping that the New Year will bering a renewed surge of enthusiasm.

Kristingle · 29/12/2011 12:41

PRSP here. Terrible time but horrendous weather, windy and wet. Im such a wuss......

I tried running on Dhs treadmill but hated it. It was ok for walkimg but the impact felt weird when running. Do any of you use a treadmill?

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 29/12/2011 17:10

Another blob here. I stayed in bed until 11.30 Shock and am now fortifying myself with various carbs before going out.

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 29/12/2011 18:52

Now in PRSP - I did week 1 in -1. Should have taken gloves!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 30/12/2011 10:10

Brrrrr Shredded

I can't run on a treadmill Kristingle, it doesn't feel right and I tend to lose my balance unless I really concentrate. I can power walk on them but that is all. I've let my gym membership lapse now though, so it's no longer an option for me.

OP posts:
WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 31/12/2011 12:10

Been out again, 30 mins completed, very slowly but it feels good to have made it without walking. Nearly stopped at 15 mins again (that 15-20 min point is a real barrier for me) but the last 10 mins was great.

Anyway, Happy New Year one and all!

OP posts:
Kristingle · 31/12/2011 13:06

Well done who knows and everyne else how has been out. Or who is thinking abiut it Wink

Did my second park run today. Did so badkyblast week i had to try and geta half decent time in as my pb for 2012Grin

Wishijg you all a happy and healthy new year

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 31/12/2011 13:54

Well done WhoKnows and Kristingle! I'm just eating some toast before going out. Plan is to walk/run to the park, then do a lap (the lap is the 10k I'm doing next week) and walk/run home (to stay warm).

Shameless money grab I have set up a justgiving page for DH and my half marathon. I was going to get round to it at some point in the next couple of weeks, but heard yesterday that a friend has just had a second child diagnosed with the same condition as DS1 and one of her other children, which gave me the kick up the behind I needed to get around to sorting it out. If anyone would be kind enough to consider sponsoring me, please PM me and I will send you the link.

Kristingle · 31/12/2011 14:49

Most impressed at the 10k shredded. I can t even imagine runningthat far Shock

I was LOL today at my kids, who were looking at the parkrun results online with me and wondering why i hadnt won!!!!! Well if i had i woudl have taken 20 secs off the world record for my age.....

Grin Grin

Suppose i shoudl be pleased they have such confidence in me...........
