Couch to 5k 2011 Part Four: Post even if you haven't run!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 19/10/2011 21:42

Yet more space for us to talk about our progress on the Couch to 5K programme, the stuff we wear, the music we listen to, the gadgets we use and our nail varnish.

New runners are warmly welcomed - come and give it a whirl, you know you want to! There has been a lot of success on this thread, both in the UK and internationally, moral support is abundant, and there is always a kick up the arse for anyone who needs one!

Some of us are on our second time round now, so don't worry that you will be behind, just jump in whatever stage you are at.

OP posts:
brighthair · 30/11/2011 22:56

I used seche vite, but still no joy. Dry now though :-)

NellVarnish · 30/11/2011 23:59

Is it pretty brighthair? Am I, oops meant DD1, going to like it? Do you have to stand under some spotlights and wave your nails around for the full effect? Have you burned off any calories with your exercise?!

Seche Vite is fab, I love it but ours has gone a bit gloopy now. Need a new one, tis fab, makes nails v. shiny too.

iPhone it is then WhoKnows! Ordered and delivery on Friday, yippee! Tis only the 3 and on the cheapest contract I could find but I don't care. No time to run? Grin

Btw I love your Christmas name! I can't think of anything for me.

Jelli well done on the 30 seconds shaved off, tis fab!

Pistey, baby steps darling, baby steps. You don't want to overwhelm me do you?!

Night all :)

brighthair · 01/12/2011 00:14

It is very, very pretty Grin can't wait to try the rest of the colours
Well, some calories burnt I think, was all a bit hot and sweaty so I feel I expended some energy Blush
Will be making up for it tomorrow with an hour riding lesson and the gym

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 01/12/2011 04:11

I don't think it was me (but it might have been)

LinzerTorte · 01/12/2011 05:07

Nell Was just going to post that you need an iPhone (as do I), when I see that you have ordered one! Envy Envy I have an iPod, which is great, but I can't use it out and about - well, only to listen to music obviously. I also thought it was you who told us about the OPI app; it was definitely someone on this thread. I've reinstalled it but sadly it won't open - tis fab, you can see exactly what the colour is going to look like on your hands (and even adjust the skin colour of your hands, although I noticed on the website that you can also adjust nail length, which I'm not sure you can do on the app).

Jelli Ah, now I understand! I was thinking you were some kind of superwoman Grin but 30 sec per mile is also very impressive.

I ended up bidding on four of the OPI polishes yesterday but missed out on them all. Sad There was quite a bidding war in the last 10 seconds. Only Light My Sapphire went for ?1, and the others for between about ?2.50 and ?4.50 (the ones I bid on all towards the higher end), so still fairly bargainous. Well, they would have been a bargain if I'd actually managed to get one. Anyway, to cheer myself up, I bought the set of mini polishes that I was thinking about buying the other day.

LinzerTorte · 01/12/2011 05:46

It was Pistey who told us about the OPI app back in the summer. I did a search.

NellVarnish · 01/12/2011 19:32

at Linzer. I have just found out today from another iPhone friend that the one I am getting ie. the oldest, cheapest does not support the OPI app! Shriekkk! That was the deciding factor!

You got great bargains though with your OPI - report back when it arrives - thanks for your pm, will reply in a mo, must eat something as am getting all hangry. Grin

LinzerTinsel · 01/12/2011 20:08

Oh no Nell, what a disaster! Can you get an upgrade soon-ish? Have just dropped some heavy hints to DH, which he is studiously ignoring - he has some assessment centre thing at work tomorrow which he is busy preparing for. Honestly, you'd think it was more important than whether or not I get an iPod for Christmas! Grin

Have just realised I can't go running tomorrow morning after all - DD1 will be at home as there's an open day at one of the secondary schools in the morning. But I shall go out on Saturday instead. Definitely.

brighthair · 01/12/2011 21:05

I have been to the gym
Sad
I ran week one (again) and my stupid stupid calf muscles gave up again, I nearly cried, but consoled myself by swearing under my breath. I did my weight and resistance work, realised I was still mad. Got back on the treadmill and (without the walking 5 mins start bit) ran 11 mins of week 2

I'm starting to think I won't be able to do it, it is just so painful, more irritating than being out of breath because at least you know that will get better!

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 02/12/2011 06:47

Hello all and good luck to Mr Linzer at his assessment centre

Nelly, Envy for your i-phone even if it is an old model.

bright - keep taking it slowly and stretching before you start. I find that a walk or a good stretch makes a big difference.

I've been suffering all day after doing Jillian's power yoga yesterday morning and a colleague's farewell party last night but went for a very slow jog this evening. I did the opposite to jelli and was a minute per km slower than my best pace. I really need to find some oomph.

NellVarnish · 02/12/2011 08:39

shredded - it was quite bargainous actually, £20 per month contract because it is old. I've never had a contract phone before. Whether I'll be able to work it after years of £10 Tesco jobbies is abother thing!

A Slow Jog is better than No Jog shredded, especially if you're feeling delicate tired, and get you at Jillian's power yoga too! Your boys won't recognise you when they get home, not long now.

bright I second the stretching, my calf muscles used to ache a bit but I found if I did proper stretches instead of sketchy ones like I normally did, it helped a bit. Well done for cracking on though. My nails inc has come this morning, looks gorgeoise and prettily packaged. I will have to hide it now till Christmas or I will be tempted to try it and it is a present. Have you recovered from your other exertions yet? Are you sure that's not what caused the calf problems?

Linzer - did you manage to get out? DH needs to get his priorities right. Work or iPhone? No contest. I think you should leave him. Grin

Hope everyone is ok and happy and healthy-ish. It's a lovely day here today, I might go for a run walk.

Wink
NellVarnish · 02/12/2011 08:40

WhoKnows, where are you? Have you managed to get off Pinterest yet? Wink

WhoKnowsWhereTheMistletoes · 02/12/2011 09:08

Morning all,

Too busy to run again yesterday Blush and fairly unlikely today too unless I go out tonight .

Nell - thank you, I managed to log on and start messing with the settings as I wanted to disengage it from my FB account (much as I like FB I don't like all these attempts to force you to use it for specific things), however yesterday was manic and I didn't go back to it. Also can't remember what name I called myself [useless emoticon]. I will sort it out today! BTW when I changed from basic Nokia phone to Iphone it was one of those why didn't I do this years ago moments.

Shredded - indeed any jog is better than no jog which is what I have achieved this week so far (will definitely go for a slow jog tonight to the chinese takeaway).

In mitigation for my lack of exercise, I have done masses of decluttering at home this week

Must go, I'm off for a day out at the Winchester Christmas market with friends.

JingleNells · 02/12/2011 15:08

It works! It works! The OPI app works! I am a happy bunny it doesn't take much really.

Grin

Hope you've had a good day at the Christmas Market WhoKnows, tis chilly here, just right for gluhwein, yum!

brighthair · 02/12/2011 17:02

I have new trainers Grin apparently I do the opposite to pronate? My feet roll to the outside and so do my trainers Blush so I now have some neutral ones
Also helpful shop guy runs a starter running programme and gave me some stretches and a promise it will get better!!

maybetoday · 02/12/2011 17:06

W8R3 this morning and it didn't rain hurrah! Think I'm nowhere near to running 5K, though comforting myself with the fact the route I run is very hilly and I'm sure if it was flatter I would be covering more distance...Hmm
I've just got an Iphone this week too. It's only the 3GS, but very excited as my old phone has been slowly dying for a long time. What's the OPI app? Tell me all the good stuff I should get! (In idiot proof baby steps Wink)

maybetoday · 02/12/2011 17:09

Hello brighthair, that sounds good. My calf pain definitely got a better after the first couple of weeks and with stretching after running. I'm sure it will settle down.

JingleNells · 02/12/2011 18:15

Oooh well done maybe, that's great, you'll soon be graduating! I hated hills when I was running and did everything I could to avoid them. They really left me out of puff. Excellent news re iPhone, I am a mere novice too and had to get DD1 to set it all up for me but fingers crossed it's going well and I love it! The OPI app is free, and she downloaded it easily thank goodness as it was the deciding factor in having the phone Now I can look at all the pretty OPI colours till my heart's content. Sad I know.

Someone more iPhone savvy will be along in a mo to help us hopefully.

New shoes! Well they will make you run faster brighthair and hopefully make your aches go away.

LinzerTinsel · 02/12/2011 18:27

Yay Nell! Grin Mmm, Glühwein sounds good - I wonder if we have any left or whether we finished the last bottle yesterday. We definitely need something alcoholic to celebrate DH getting the job, anyway. Grin

brighthair Enjoy your new trainers! I must try to find somewhere that does gait analysis as maybe I wouldn't need the insoles if I had properly fitted running shoes - and they kill my ankles. The skin on it, anyway.

maybe Envy of another one with an iPhone. Maybe DH will be in a more amenable mood this evening. Grin The OPI app is great as you can try out all the different colours to see what they look like on your hand (well, a hand - but you can change the skin colour). I also use the Nike app for running, but you do need to buy a sensor to get it to work.

WhoKnows At least you've done lots of decluttering and seem to be very organised wrt Christmas as well. I'm making excuses on both threads atm. But I will get out tomorrow morning - even if it rips all the skin off my ankles again. (Actually, the blister plaster does seem to be helping.)

Shredded Well done on the yoga and your slow jog - like Nell says, the fact that you've actually been out unlike some of us is the main thing.

I shall report back tomorrow on whether I have managed to persuade DH that I need an iPhone get out.

brighthair · 02/12/2011 18:44

I supinate apparently!! And so do my old trainers which isn't good
He had me stand, walk and jog bare foot whilst he watched my feet. V helpful, and the pair I got were £85 which seemed reasonable

WhoKnowsWhereTheMistletoes · 02/12/2011 19:42

I got my trainers from a proper running shop with gait analysis, well worth it IMO (I also have very wide feet and wear orthotic supports in them, so a lot to take into account).

I HAVE to get out tomorrow........

Maybe and Nell - The Runkeeper app is very good for regular runners.

brighthair · 02/12/2011 19:44

my nails have chipped Sad
but on the upside I may be going out round town tomorrow for the first time in a VERY long time. God I'm getting old, I'm only 27 and haven't been out for about 6 months!

JingleNells · 02/12/2011 19:57

WhoKnows. Cheeky bugger.

In the olden days, before time began, when I was running, I bought some trainers and had gait analysis too - very useful but my £85 trainers didn't stop me getting plantar fasciitis. But maybe that was the ballerina flats/wellies combo I was wearing that week and not the trainers.

Yay congrats to MrLinzer on the job! Tell him I think he needs to celebrate by getting you an iPhone ;)

Chipped nails brighthair! Already? Did you have your seche vite on top? Have fun painting the town red - do your nails WhoKnows Double Decker Red to match.

I'm going to do mine now ... not sure what to do. I fancy some glitter.

brighthair · 02/12/2011 19:59

I know, already :-(

not sure what colour to do them....
I'll be wearing this dress
www.phase-eight.co.uk/fcp/product/warehouse/Dresses/Pleated-Jersey-Dress/201515548

LinzerTinsel · 02/12/2011 20:44

Lovely dress, brighthair. But you are not to even think about using the word old if you are only 27. Grin

Nell I told him earlier. And I have just told him that Nell says so too. He hasn't said no yet. Grin I am hopeful-ish.

WhoKnows Arf at the app being suitable for regular runners.

We had indeed finished the Glühwein yesterday, but have had a small bottle of Sekt to celebrate and are now on the sherry. Grin
