Rhet, with DD we had a potty for about 8 months before she even sat on it so wasnt sure about signs of "readiness" but like your DD she expressed an interest in pants and we had also been been Reading a potty book she picked at the library, so we just tried it one day. I think the only way to know is just try. I thought that if she was peeing in the potty, more than in her pants I would continue.

rhetorician · 25/07/2011 08:49

hmm; ok, perhaps she's not ready then. She knows what it's for, but hasn't managed to wee in the potty once yet...so I think she understands, but can't manage the physical sensations. She will sit on the potty quite happily, but not actually do anything. Seemingly almost every other toddler of her age is potty-trained by now.

We're not pressuring her at all - or at least I hope we're not

SonicMiddleAge · 25/07/2011 09:07

Slight change of topic but thought you might find it amusing. Am training for the city to surf (12k) in a months time, and just treated myself to a gps watch. Did my Sunday loop which google maps had told me was 11km. Got home. Gutted to find distance reading was 7.1. Whinged, complained and panicked for about an hour (how can I be running that slowly, the speed is barely faster than walking, I?m knackered, how can I nearly double my distance in only 5 weeks, if that run is only 7k, all my weekday other runs must only be about 5 km etc etc.) DH listened, kept (sensibly) quiet. Picked up watch. Fiddled a bit. Changed units from imperial to metric, and handed the watch back. I am a pratt. But in good shape for my run!

rhetorician · 25/07/2011 09:38

sonic I often fantasise about that happening in reverse! that my km/min are actually mile/min (which would make me about as fast as Moshi)...

fannybanjo · 25/07/2011 09:40

rhet believe you me all toddlers her age aren't trained! Mine ain't...! Smile

peachsmuggler · 25/07/2011 10:16

Oh god no Rhet, I know loads of 3 year olds that aren't potty trained yet, don't worry, plenty of time for all that.

Lol at Sonic!

rhetorician · 25/07/2011 10:21

I am reaching the conclusion that she probably isn't ready. We'll keep going for a couple of days in any case. Exhausted today - early start, too much to do, generally and all round stressed. Will try to get run in today - long run postponed from yesterday, only chance this week to do it. No pressure then...

sfxmum · 25/07/2011 10:28

moshi hope your mum is ok again soon

rhet we had the potty out for ages and showed her what it wa for, also showed a video of toddlers using potty etc, she would sometimes take the potty to the toilet and sit on it when we were there. they do eventually get it

fannybanjo · 25/07/2011 10:31

rhet it'll just click with her. I was same with DD1 - I kind of felt pressure when her peers were already trained - I'm ashamed to admit Smarties were used as a bribe...BlushGrin

MoshiMoshi · 25/07/2011 11:45

16.07M in 2:14:27. Average pace 8:22m/m. Felt nice and comfortable and had to hold back the whole way. No niggles so very happy. Run was just the therapy I needed too. Thanks all - you are super.

fannybanjo · 25/07/2011 11:50

Jesus Moshi and you had to "hold back"!!! I bow down to you...

rhetorician · 25/07/2011 12:09

thanks for all of your advice, ladies. We have abandoned the attempt for now - she's just not ready yet. It's a bit disappointing, but we'll try again in a couple of weeks.

backwardpossom · 25/07/2011 12:39

Great running Moshi!

Rhet sympathies with the potty training. We've got pee sorted, but he just will not poop on the potty... sigh

I did a lovely 10k on Saturday in the Cairngorms. Was a trail run and was probably the hilliest and most difficult race I've ever done (also the smallest - only 32 runners and I came 23rd!!). My time was 1 hour 51 seconds apparently, which is a good 6 minutes slower than my road 10k time. I absolutely loved it though and will definitely sign up for more trail runs in the future. Might need to strap up my ankles though as I went over them a lot on tree roots and rocks.

Hope everyone is well!

DebiTheScot · 25/07/2011 13:01

That trail run looked good fun possum and knowing what the terrain round there is like that sounds like a decent time.

My ds2 is 3 in 6 weeks and very much still in nappies.

Think I've decided what bike I want. A Giant Defy 4. Only slight issue is I need to buy a new camera too as I dropped mine last week and it's going to cost £200 to fix which is more than it's worth!

Afternoon all Smile Just a quickie as am on on my jollies tomorrow. Busy ironing, packing and making last minute purchases. Think I have lost my running mojo. Just not loving it right now. Planning to go out tonight for 5/6 miles, think I may leave the garmin at home and just run for fun.

Am sure it will be tough for us all now hols are upon us and we have pesky kids at home Grin

Happy running all.

June2009 · 25/07/2011 14:59

hey drno it's a phase and running for fun might just be what you need :D I feel like that sometimes, especially since signing up for the HM.
It's nice ot have events to look forward to but at the same time, for me personally, I think it takes another meaning when I have to fit in a certain amount of running per week to be on target. My friend who signed up for it also reckons she is still not training properly for it yet, I'm not entirely sure what she means by that. She did say she found out she has a niggle with her knee when she runs more than 10k so she must have done some running.

rhet any other thoughts on September's "run to the beat"?
I've been following some kind of plan and increasing my long run every week, did 12.5k yesterday, veeeeery sloowwwly, it took me 90 minutes and I'm very tired today, my legs are aching like I didn't stretch enough! I've started re-introducing carbs in my diet last week so I thought that would help me but ???
I'm telling myself that it's ok, I just run at my pace and whatever that is is fine but I don't really want to be the last one to cross the line so now I'm (even more) nervous.

Going for a nice and easy 9k run with a friend tomorrow and quite looking forward to it, then wednesday is rest day, yay.

moshi please tell me you have been a runner since you were born, I'm very Envy at your running, how do you get to that level? What is the secret?

Also some of you ave mentionned "boot camp" is this a franchise or is it a class name at the gym? They have "boot camp" classes at my gym but they're not very hard.
They do british military fitness around here and I've enquired about that, I fancy something a bit different.

I like all the FB posts about obstacle races etc, was on the spartan race site earlier, a friend of mine did it last year and really enjoyed it. He wanted me to sign up to the 5k with him this year, he's moved unfortunately and I'd forgotten all about it! maybe...

re: potty training dd has just turned 2 and she knows when she needs to go but it's usually too quick and she refuses to sit on the potty undressed. The keyworker said that if she doesn't want to sit on it then she's not ready, simple as that, told me to wait another month or two.

to all and welcome to new runners, not had much time to catch up properly or post lately, too busy trying to fit in some running ;)

rhetorician · 25/07/2011 15:07

june2009 hello! and Dr No - I think it's just phases with running - I go off it and then am into it again. Just part of the training cycle. Running for fun really is no harm especially as you've worked so hard at it.

june2009 I am doing OK with my running, but really struggling to get the long runs in - I've 6 weeks to my half, and seemingly every time I'm planning a long run something comes up (today, for example). But I have cut my pace on the longer runs which means I can complete them easily - but am running interval and hills. The truth is I just don't have the time to do a lot of distance at the kind of paces I need to run

DebiTheScot · 25/07/2011 17:09

I just put a bike on my credit card!
So that's flights, garmin and bike all in 1 week. Beans on toast for the tea for the next month then Grin I don't think I've ever spent so much in a one-er before apart from when moving house. Let's hope nothing breaks as we now have no money.

Wheelybug · 25/07/2011 17:16

5 miles in the gym this morning - legs a bit tired after yesterday's effort but managed to push it a little bit.

rhet - arrgh to potty training ! It is definitely the lowest point in my parenting career. I tried DD1 when she was 2.6 and she refused point blank to sit on a toilet or potty - in all other ways was ready, had a cast iron bladder and I could take her out in pants but she would hold wee for 4-5 hours before exploding ! Eventually when she was 2.9 she decided to do it because I told her she could wear dresses to pre-school if she did and so literally overnight she potty trained, virtually no accidents. By 3 she was dry and clean and through the night ok.

So, on that note - my plan is to start potty training DD2 tomorrow. She is 2.4 - shows more sign that dd1 ever did but I am not holding out much hope tbh. Its only that I want to at least say I tried before she starts pre-school and she seems to have a group of friends that all potty trained before 2. I am dreading it to be honest.....

And yes, I hear from my Mum about how theyall potty trained their children before 2 but if I had to have kids in terry nappies before the invention of automatic washing machines I guess I might have perservered!!

rhetorician · 25/07/2011 17:38

wheely glad it's not just me; it makes me think I am not cut out to be a parent...she is also not well (cold, cough) which probably doesn't help. Have given up for now. Long run postponed until I get back from Cork tomorrow evening. God help me.

MoshiMoshi · 25/07/2011 18:10

rhet - I am quite shouty at the moment which CONSTANTLY makes me think I am not cut out to be a parent ...

futurity · 25/07/2011 18:32

Managed my long run today..1 down..5 to go! I'm counting them down over the summer holidays as every run feels like it is planned to perfection to fit it in when the kids are off school. First time I have run that far in the afternoon and it actually wasn't that bad. Going to see if I can get through this summer holidays without putting on too much weight from picnics and ice cream!

futurity · 25/07/2011 19:29

forgot to say...got Paula's "How to Run" book...had a quick flick through and it does look good...lots of shiny photos with lots of Nike running gear being displayed!

Did a 5k tonight according to Gary garmin I'm getting quicker. I kept getting the giggles while running tonight because I couldn't get out of my head a conversation I'd had with my 4 year old charge last week.

I'd was moaning that I been bitten on my ankle the night before. He wanted to know what by so I said some sort of bug but I didn't see it so wasn't sure what. He thought about it and said maybe it was a stray dog that you didn't see. I think I would have noticed a dog biting my ankle I explained so it must have been a bug. He inspected my leg and declared that it was defo a dog bite and I should be careful of dogs next time.

So all the time I was running I was imagining running along with a dog bite my ankle and me not noticing just keeping on running.
