Fantastic, encyclogirl !

I've just been out for a very slow 5 miles - I went out with a friend who is a 12 min/mile kind of girl which I found hard going. Running club is out at the moment as there are major roadworks on my husbands route home from work so he can't get home in time to let me out due to delays - and I usually take this girl with me. I offered to go out with her tonight instead and I found it hard to go slow - quite tiring actually. I enjoyed the company though. She's not from the area so I think it was nice for her to see a different route, too.

DrNortherner · 16/08/2011 20:59

Yay! 3 cheers for your dh! Another garminified runner. This thread should be sponsored by Garmin.

Just back from 5 miles of tough intervals. Sore right shin, off to ice.

Night all.

Phew, finally caught up again. Just wanted to say a belated congrats on the scan results and house move Peach - and that I also read 'How to be a Woman' on my kindle and thought it was fabulous.

Have now managed 2 miles without stopping, plus an aerobics class with a couple of girls from work and am feeling better for it already. Dr No have you decided what you're doing about the Bradford Half? I am thinking it might be a bit too soon for me given the slow progress of my recovery, but will see how it goes over the next few weeks.

V poetic Cestlavie, and very inspiring! Totally agree that autumn is the best time of year for running, just the smell of it makes me feel happy. Looking forward to getting out there properly.

Sorry to hear about Sparkle sfxmum, your DD handled it beautifully though.

Some really amazing times and distances being run recently, I am so impressed and jealous!

Welcome to the new ladies - we are all runners here, whether it's 2 miles or 20 miles. It's a state of mind (or slight madness perhaps, accompanied by an addiction to buying running clothes and gadgets).

Trainers - I wear Brooks, my achilles couldn't cope with ASICs.

Happy running.x

Stop wishing summer away everyone!

I went out with my Garmin tonight too. First run in 2 weeks and I planned 4 miles but felt good so did an extra 1. Slowest mile was 9 min 33 which I was pretty happy with.

I like that I can have the Garmin set to show me speed when cycling and pace when running without having to fiddle with the settings. I wish it showed average pace on the main screen though. I can only find it by going into the history bit.

My plan is to do 3 'just running' runs this week and next plus a couple of cycles per week. Then we're on holiday again so might not do much. Then I'll start a 'proper' plan with intervals and stuff. I need to get those races entered. The first is a 10k at the start of Oct.

Well made it back out for my fist runs after shaking this pesky virus. Jogged home from work yesterday, at a slow and steady 6km in 35:20, then back into work today about 7km along the river. This mornig's was a truggle -one of those runs when you spend the whole run just running until the next corner, but I stayed running the whole time which felt like an acheivement in itself. Mother nature seemed to decide to bail me out too - no headwind (usually really gusty stong headwinds at that time in the morning) and just when I felt like collapsing around 3km was accompanied by some dolphins less than 10m out in the water, who styaed with me for a good km, by which time I was past the brewery and on the home straight. 10days till city to surf, so need to get my distances back up - will try another run on Friday I think.

encyclogirl · 17/08/2011 09:23

Planning a 6 miler this evening. I have GOT to try out my new Garmin! It's a 110 by the way.

Can I also ask, do you listen to audio when you run? What do you listen to? I practically blow my head off with the Prodigy or Faithless or some such at the moment. Will I always need music to take my mind off things?

Sorry for the bombardment. Wait till I get started on nutrition...

encyclogirl · 17/08/2011 09:25

Sonic your run sounds wonderful! Dolphins? Where are you running?

Debi your times are amazing. I'm lucky to break 11 at the moment, but I have to remember only 3 weeks ago the very notion of running for an hour was ridiculous to me. I can do it now. One step at a time and all that.

stickylittlefingers · 17/08/2011 09:51

hello! I'm just a snotmonster now, so decided I was allowed out again. So 5k before breakfast, and I feel all happy and smiley again :) Feels good to be back (good to see you back on your feet too Sonic)

What a great DH you have there, encyclogirl! Re audio, it totally depends what I'm doing and my mood. Sometimes I need something noisy to make me go (I put together tunes to make me do fartlek, for example), other times I want to hear the birds sing... For some LSRs I have also listened to comedy podcasts (and then try not to laugh out loud for no apparent reason in the middle of nowhere like a total loon Grin). Have a lovely time this evening.

Glad your DP has seen the virtues of the English countryside rhet! My parents live in Swaledale, so it was lovely running around there. I think it's true for "furriners" in general terms that "England" is represented on the television as the south east, and the north and South-west can come as a (nice) surprise. Now I've been up here a while I'm always amazed by how crowded it gets as you go South. Not sure how I coped living in Reading now! It's a relief to get north of York again. We're spoilt in that way, which is good to remember when we're all carping about the grim economic situation up here.

Clearly getting back to running makes me harp on, so I'm going to go and do something more useful!!

rhetorician · 17/08/2011 10:09

hello everyone! nearly time for a new thread...encyclogirl sounds like you are making very rapid progress to me.

SLF glad you are out and about again - I think it's probably that a lot of Irish people go to English cities, rather than the countryside as well.

I am a bit weary today - out for drinks with a friend which always mucks up my sleep, DD (grrr) having a (for her) week of early waking too. But will drag myself out for an easy 3 miles later on today. It's a beautiful day here - sunny, but distinctly autumnal feeling (my earlier misty-eyed notions about chilly weather have been punctured by the news that gas is going up by an eye-watering 20%!!)

bonkers20 · 17/08/2011 10:14

Hello, Just seen this in most popular threads so I should mark my spot. I'm terrible!

backwardpossom · 17/08/2011 10:27

Me too bonkers - really difficult to keep up!

Quenelle · 17/08/2011 10:41

Hello runnists. I haven't ran since last Thursday and didn't make parkrun at the weekend so I have been sidling past this thread as too ashamed.

I was home from work early last night so managed to get out, I planned to do 3.5 miles but my Garmin died almost as soon as I started. I did a different route so I have no idea how far I ran, or for how long.

Rhet I'm impressed at your running streak. I would like to try the same but am wary of running two days in a row because of injury risk.

Can you set the Garmin 305 to go beep at every mile? I think I'd like that. Perhaps we should put Sponsored by Garmin in the next thread title, they might send us some goodies [mercenary]

I'm ignoring all this talk of Autum until after my camping trip at the end of August. It's a risky time to go, the weather is always atrocious around the bank holiday, but it's the only time available to us due to childminder holidays and work commitments.

sleepwhenIdie perhaps you could make your first go on a bike from the top of Alpe d'Huez...? Wink

backwardpossom · 17/08/2011 10:45

Quenelle you can set it to beep every mile (or km if you prefer) - you have to set up a lap as being a mile (or km). I can't remember how I did it, but it must have been easy enough if I managed!

rhetorician · 17/08/2011 10:53

new thread - I get panicky when it gets near the end. sfxmum your race isn't on the list - I trawled through a few pages of aimless chat witty running lore and couldn't find it, so would you add it again?

see you over there, ladies

rhetorician · 17/08/2011 10:57

quenelle you go to the screen with 'training' > training options > autolap > by distance > select whatever interval you want it to lap at (it will offer you miles or km depending on which option you've picked in settings)

Quenelle · 17/08/2011 11:29

Thanks rhet and backward. See you on the new thread. Love the new title rhet Wink

orangehead · 17/08/2011 22:05

Quenelle if you want to see how far you ran use the womens running website, you can plot your route on the map and it tells ou how far it is

Quenelle · 18/08/2011 09:07

Hi orangehead

Unfortunately I live on a new development which doesn't appear on any maps yet, it's weird. I am interested to see what happens when I do upload a run from my Garmin. It's all charged up and ready for today's run, which I'm trying to summon enthusiasm for (DS was sick in his cot last night and spent the rest of the night in our bed).
