a thread for runners to chat, debate, share tips, triumphs (and the occasional disaster!) - new runners particularly welcome, the only thing that's required is enthusiasm (and a pair of running shoes)

I haven't run since Saturday and only did a fast (for me!) 8k with a 10k on the Friday, will I be ok for my HM on Saturday? . I'm going to go out tomorrow, how far should I go?

I'll catch up properly later when I'm not on the iPhone, I just popped in to share my wobble. GrinGrin

DrNortherner · 21/06/2011 17:52

Themaster, I wouldn't do too many miles tomorrow if your race is Sat. 4/5 at the most. There will be no training effect now by Sat anyway, so you simply just want to keep your legs turning. Steady and flat. Good luck for Sat!

I have running club this evening, under black Yorkshire skies. Am gonna get wet!

pawsnclaws · 21/06/2011 18:14

TheMaster I wouldn't do more than say 5k nice and easy, just to keep your muscles nice and loose. Don't want to sabotage all of that hard work!

Wheely it's one of the Sky channels. Not sure I want to tune in again after watching one of the gladiators have his ..... (tries to find a polite way of saying it) ...... "manhood" cut off as a punishment before being crucified. Probably very realistic historically, but not something I want to watch necessarily!

peachsmuggler · 21/06/2011 18:39

Have seen clips of that Spartacus paws, it looks as if someone is having a dare to see how violent they can make it!

You are second person to recommend "Game of Thrones". I sooo wish we had Sky.

After lovely loafing week in Scotland, being driven about everywhere, back to earth with a thud today on my own with DP back at work. Absolutely shattered today. Fell asleep twice this afternoon while DD watched Toy Story (bad parenting emotcion!)

Very envious of all you fit folk. Don't know if I'll be running anytime soon. Might try one and see how it goes. Just worried about exhausting myself. Will try and retain remaining fitness vicariously by watching tennis Grin

very exciting about your half Master. Agree with the others, just about ticking over till Saturday. What's your weather forecast, dare I ask?

peachsmuggler · 21/06/2011 18:44

And cestlavie, what are your plans for this week? I know you feel your training has not gone the way you would like but have you got a time in mind?

Any sign of the coo?

ThatVikRinA22 · 21/06/2011 19:05

hello again!

well i went and got some proper running stuff today and some proper shoes for my gait.
i roll in quite badly which is why is suspect i was getting pain in knees and ankles so armed with some lovely new Brookes trainers i decided to try on some capri pants and a top.... i was running in the wrong shoes and thick jogging bottoms and t shirt, the difference in proper running gear is amazing. i feel a spending spree coming on....spent enough today though!

i am meant to be going to running club tomorrow....dont let me talk myself out of it! im soooo nervous!

i went for a very quick 15 min run to test out new gear!

cestlavie · 21/06/2011 22:06

Hi peach thanks for remembering!

Actually, am having a slight potential fiasco, apart from training not having gone quite as well would have hoped! Had noticed for last few days a slightly dull ache at top of inner thigh/ groin, seeming to have come out of nowhere (although had a couple of hard tempo runs last week). Went for a 5 mile easy run on Monday morning and although it's not particularly painful it's definitely noticeable when I'm running and is a bit sore generally. Think am planning not to run at all this week and see how it goes... hopefully will settle with a bit of a rest. Has anyone had anything similar? Would love to know what it is and how to magically fix it...? I had been aiming for circa 1.45 - 1.50, and ideally below 1.48 but not sure how realistic that's currently looking.

No sign of thecoo lately at all, though had been asking her advice on Bishops Stortford a couple of weeks back. Hope life hasn't got in the way of running... terrible when that happens!

Master if I was running this week, I think I'd be taking it fairly easy as part of the taper. My plan (if it helps) was a 5 mile easy Monday, a 5 miles tomorrow morning with 2 miles at HM pace and then a 3 mile very easy on Friday.

paws sounds like you've got some quite interesting TV over there!

ThatVikRinA22 · 21/06/2011 22:18

sorry i appear to keep butting in with posts which have no relevance...these threads move so fast and i was a bit giddy with the new shoes....apologies.

drivingmisscrazy · 21/06/2011 22:20

vicar - don't worry! there's always about 10 conversations going on at once. Great that you've got your gear sorted - the shoes in particular will really help. I must confess that I went through a 'gear' phase, but it does mostly last quite well and the more you race, the more ugly highly useful T-shirts you acquire!

OP posts:
DebiTheScot · 21/06/2011 22:26

Lol vicar I thnk you're allowed to be excited about your new shoes!

Fingers crossed your niggle is no more than a niggle cestalive

I did a 45 min cycle tonight. I was doing 5 mins fast and 1 min recovery for the whole 45 mins and I felt like I was working my legs off and going super fast. So I wasn't amused to find my average speed was still just 15.5mph.
I need a road bike.

DebiTheScot · 21/06/2011 22:28

driving don't you wish though that races would give out useful tshirts? I really don't like cotton tshirts for wearing or running in. Obviously fancy ones would cost more.

DebiTheScot · 21/06/2011 22:28

meant to add, though to the end of last sentence.

peachsmuggler · 21/06/2011 22:33

Vicar, great news on the gear, especially the all essential shoes! Even the clothes do make a difference I find. When I started running I wore jogging bottoms which didn't really have enough movement and so it really made a difference when I got proper shorts/tights.

My friend was telling me at the weekend about Stella Mccartney's running range which she says are beeyoootiful, but a flipping fortune. I got quite intrigued which is odd as I am in no way interested in fashion, but running fashion is another matter!!!

peachsmuggler · 21/06/2011 22:37

Bummer about the groin pain cestlavie, will keep fingers crossed that the rest let's it heal before Sunday!

drivingmisscrazy · 21/06/2011 22:40

the national lottery dublin marathon race series (5 mile, 10 mile, half marathon, full marathon) hands out proper running shirts - a different colour for each race each year. They are much coveted, and I am going to get three of them this year! I hope...

OP posts:
DebiTheScot · 21/06/2011 22:41

right, I'm coming to Dublin! I want a useful tshirt!

drivingmisscrazy · 21/06/2011 22:43

the marathon is pricey, but the others are good value - ?50 for 3 races...
here. They take place on my regular running territory.

ThatVikRinA22 · 21/06/2011 23:06

well i got a ron hill lovely bump hiding top and some running capris....they feel like a second skin...i had no idea how light they were - will make all the difference i feel! and i have lost 5lb! i love this running lark i do!

ThatVikRinA22 · 21/06/2011 23:07

....i cant wait until i am entering races...i look up to you all!

YeahThatsTheBadger · 21/06/2011 23:18

Hello all! Back from Ireland yesterday and after some encouragement from Driving I went out for a run. And the sore knee is back. Angry Hoping it is just shortlived and my body's way of telling me that I shouldn't take time off from running!
So glad I didn't taken my trainers to Ireland though. My cousins DH was trying to get me to go out with him for his long run. 15 miles. 15 MILES? God, no way! I think I'll gradually work my way up to that...maybe in a few years.

Vicar glad you're all kitted out and comfortable, and that it helps. Good luck for tomorrow with the running club. Make sure you let us know how you get on.

Anyway, I'm going to attempt to up my distance now that I can comfortably run 5k. Just wondering if there is a formula or percentage you can go by, to avoid injury and knackering myself?

pawsnclaws · 22/06/2011 07:18

Vicar I love my Brooks shoes - the only ones wide enough for my toes.

Badger I think the general advice is to up your long run by no more than 10% a week, and not to increase pace at the same time as distance.

cestlavie my DH has a hernia which is not particularly painful but which is a dull ache for example when lifting or running. He's had that for ages though, so if your has come on suddenly it's not so likely I think. May be worth getting checked out though if it doesn't disappear quickly.

notyummy · 22/06/2011 08:32

Sorry to hear about your injury C'est - hope it clears up quickly.

Vicar - I am sure you will notice a big difference if you were running in jogging bottoms before. I have never tried in them, but I imagine they must feel pretty heavy.

Wheely - if you are not using weights then it probably will be your legs that feel 6 Week 6 Pack a bit, which is odd, given its name!! That said, runners should be doing lots of squats and lunges from what I have been told, to work the hamstring and balance out all the work that the quads get - otherwise you get unbalanced leg muscles. So, you have been doing yourself good. Perhaps use a weight and od the hard vesrion of every exercise next time to make sure your core and upper body get a proper workout? I use 3 KG for that one.

thecoo · 22/06/2011 08:35

Hi all. Sorry I disappeared for a bit - some personal/family issues have kind of taken over recently.

Have missed you all and seeing what you're up to. Can't believe you're on page 29 of a brand new thread though, didn't realise it had been THAT long since I was last on here...

Physio has gone well and I'm now running without achilles problems - hurray! Unfortunately seem to have lost all my fitness though, so running for just 50 minutes last Friday just about finished me off... Am not doing the Stortford 10 miles any more, so have removed it from the list:

Haven't had a chance to catch up yet, but will try over the next few days to see what's going on with you all. I am off to South Africa on Saturday though, for a memorial service, so probably won't get much posting done until I get back later next week. Don't forget about me though!

Hope you're all doing ok and that there are less on the injury bench... and good luck to those that are running this weekend!

squix · 22/06/2011 09:09

Argghhh ? I washed my Garmin! Came back after a soggy 5k last night, stripped all my wet gear off and it must have become caught up in the washing. It seems to have survived ? it measured the distance from where it was charging to the Kitchen. I?ll have to test it properly later. I also managed to leave my cheapo running phone in the pocket of my running tights ? I don?t think that has fared so well..........I think I must be somewhat distracted at the moment.

Debi - I have ordered the 30 day shred too ? just waiting for Amazon to deliver.

Hello chewytoffee - glad to see you back, how are your knees? Do you think you?ll be doing the Dundee ½? I was talking to a friend last week

themaster - not long to go now ? hope your preparation is going well.

vicar - new shoes are always exciting ? I think my DH thinks that running is another excuse for me to buy more shoes. Good luck with your running club.

T Shirts ? I got decent ?technical? t shirt at Edinburgh ? mind you it was pretty pricey to enter so I think I?d have been mightily hacked off with a ?race rag? at the end of it.

drivingmisscrazy · 22/06/2011 10:23

another weekend's racing (nearly typed raving!) coming up! I will miss the race reports as - feel sorry for me now! - I will be in the south of France. DD very excited about sandcastles, even though we are not by the sea! She said that we had to put 'spade' on our shopping list!

Raining here :( but will go out for 45 mins or so of very easy running later on. Hope you are all having a good day!
