dobby2001 · 01/01/2011 20:38

Thought i would start a new thread so al those wanting to start or return to running in 2011 had somewhere to post Smile

I have NEVER tried running before so very very nervous about starting, but thought couch to 5k sounded a good method of getting into it.

I am off to bluewater tomorrow to buy running shoes - any recommendations???

Teeny, it gets better Grin

Ive only done week one so far, going for week two tomorrow. The first run was A CHALLENGE, after that it felt more doable. If you find it very hideous, try slowing down your pace a little.

Grin @ crockpot not being the most stupid looking person and at ratherbeingonthepiste forgetting her bra (hussy) Wink

YorkshireCrockpot · 19/01/2011 08:39

My baby's got chickenpox! Argh! She's highly grumpy spotty and keeps spiking temps and I'm sure in 2 weeks dd1 will succumb. If dd2 is in a better mood later I'm aiming to get out and start week 3. She's snoring quietly on me at the minute! Taking the next few weeks a bit slower and getting out when I can.

YorkshireCrockpot · 19/01/2011 08:43

Teeny just take it slow and do what you're able to do and it will get better. Geraldine good luck for week 2! Ratherbeonpiste Grin forgetting your bra! Haha!

LIZS · 19/01/2011 09:00

Aargh - need to do Week 1 run 2 and it is cold and icy. How do you get motivated and would it be best to leave it until later this morning?

RatherBeOnThePiste · 19/01/2011 09:19

I'd just go for it now LIZS!! If its not slippy underfoot just frost on cars etc it will be fine, but do wear gloves! But I have found that I am much happier running in the evenings. It somehow suits me better.

LIZS · 19/01/2011 12:07

Went - seemed much harder going than previous one , maybe because it was cold. Ears were very cold by the time I got back !

RatherBeOnThePiste · 19/01/2011 12:24

LIZS - you need a hat!! Well done for going today Smile
[thumbs up]

girtlush · 19/01/2011 12:24

Week 2 run 2 done. Feel like I'm getting the hang of it now.

I am Shock at how much difference proper running shoes make. My knees and hips didn't hurt at all today and I don't feel stiff afterwards.

LIZS I had trouble with a cold head too this morning. It gave me an ice cream headache :o
I think I will get a hat for Friday's run. I also find that once I've made the decision to go I have to go immediatley otherwise I talk myself out of it.

Teeny I found the first run hideous, but it has got significantly easier since then.

Marniesmummy how is your foot?

Good Luck everyone :o

RatherBeOnThePiste · 19/01/2011 12:35

girt - we call that Brain Freeze!

sybilfaulty · 19/01/2011 20:13

Am just back from Week 5 run1 of Robert and loved it! Am getting hooked. Still hard work and puffed but managed my 5 mins runs and feel keen to go again.

I wonder if I've lost any weight. Doubt it.

MarniesMummy · 19/01/2011 21:12

Just back from week 2 run3 and I loved it!Grin

I see a pattern developing, run 1 is ok, run 2 is painful and run 3 is fun.

The 3 minute run has my name on it, my friday gift!

Girt - my foot seems to be responding to not being touched. I just poked it and found that it didn't hurt so much. Maybe it was just a blister.

Hi Teeny, keep at it. I'm 2 weeks in and I am beginning to see how this could become addictive. I really hope so as I'm 42, overweight with big jugs (and the biggest bum you ever did seeSad).
I read (on Roberts comment page I think) that runners were saying you don't loose weight doing c25k however, I definitely am.

Let's do thisGrin.

mistressploppy · 19/01/2011 22:10

Hello sporty people, can I join?

I am trying to get fit - I hate exercise generally but I did manage to get up to running for 30mins (motivated by my wedding!)

But that was a couple of years ago and I'm a big blob yet again Sad

Here's where I'm at presently; which of these is better, do you think?

I can run for 2min, walk for 2min at speed 9 on the treadmill, for about 10 mins.

OR

(today I managed) 10mins solid at speed 7.8

MarniesMummy · 19/01/2011 23:01

Grin at being called a sporty person.

I think I love you mistressploppy!

Course you can join, the more the merrier.

geraldinetheluckygoat · 20/01/2011 12:49

Ah well done everyone, sounds like we're all startingto get there!

Well I have not such good news, I think I might have shin splints - keep getting a shooting jarring pain in my shins as I run Sad
I am going at the weekend to get fitted for a decent pair of shoes, we're gonig to the inlaws in Southampton this weekend so hope there will be somewhere there I can get some from. I think I have to wait till they get better before I continue, which Im gutted about as I did my w2r1 yesteday, and if it hadnt been for the shin pain, I would have enjoyed it I think. I feel like ive started to firm up and lose a bit of weight too, and I don't want to stop, so we will see after I get my new trainers, how I get on.

booooo Sad

RatherBeOnThePiste · 20/01/2011 15:52

Oh Gawd.

That all went wrong.

Week 3 Run 3. Had to go early because no time later. Was in a rush so sort of skipped the warm up ( bad I know ) but the timings didn't seem right. Did a different route. Really struggled. Bollocks. Should I do today's again on Sat or should i plough onto week 4?

Feel really bleugh, so all kicks up my backside are welcome.

Teeny, ignore me I'm just having a moment!

Geraldine - I'm not sure what shin splints are but they sound hideous. Hope you get sorted quickly.

cubscout · 20/01/2011 16:36

Week 4 now for me, was very scared about the 5 min run but amazingly managed it although pretty achey afterwards. I'm definately starting to get an exercise high though and feel great after.

Rather - maybe repeat 1 more day of week 3 with a proper warm up? I did this last time round at week 4 or 5 I think adn it made a difference.

geraldine - ouch! Good trainers make an amazing difference though.

Marnie - I think I am loosing a bit of weight too - I think my clothers are definately slightly looser. I'm also eating more.

geraldinetheluckygoat · 20/01/2011 18:01

OnthePiste, I would repeat that one again if it felt truly hideous, otherwise you might struggle with the next and get really disheartened. Though, it could be because you skipped the warm up...but repeat again, if you have a better experience, you will feel more positive about tackling the next one I rekon..

RatherBeOnThePiste · 20/01/2011 18:14

I reckon you are both right. It was wrong before I had started! The different route didn't help with and then I got a stitch. I am a bag of woes. Lol. Not really because the other two this week have been fab.

I shall repeat week3 level3 on Saturday. Thanks.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 20/01/2011 18:19

And Geraldine, how are your shins?

RatherBeOnThePiste · 20/01/2011 18:24

Actually I have just googled shin splints. Ow ow ow Sad

MarniesMummy · 20/01/2011 18:45

Geraldine - Ouch! I hope the new trainers make all of the difference.

Rather - Sounds like you've got more than enough drive to power through this. I hope the repeat goes ok.

I'm supposed to do w3r1 tomorrow but am feeling unwell (like being sick) todaySad.

maclover135 · 20/01/2011 19:10

I repeated w3r3 today as I didn't feel ready to start week 4 - the 5 min run sounds awful. However, the 3 mins felt much more comfortable today so think I might give week 4 a go on Saturday. Cubscout it's good to hear that it's not as bad as you thought.

Can't tell you how motivating it is having this thread - I think I would have given up by now if it weren't for the podcast and then being able to report on here!!
Geraldine - I've had shin splints before - ouch Sad.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 20/01/2011 20:13

Mac - same!

I am repeating Week 3 run3 on Sat, then moving on, am glad it's not just me Grin It all went tits up today.

geraldinetheluckygoat · 20/01/2011 20:59

Me too, its a great thread!

Where's Dobby, I wonder?

Shins are bearing up thanks Grin. Talked to my friend who is a serious runner earlier who thinks it could be just my body getting usedto running, since i've never done it before. Hope so. I will get more trainers and hope for best ;)

Onthepiste.....dont forget yer bra on Sat Grin

RatherBeOnThePiste · 20/01/2011 21:54

LOL - thanks Geraldine!!
