Thought i would start a new thread so al those wanting to start or return to running in 2011 had somewhere to post Smile

I have NEVER tried running before so very very nervous about starting, but thought couch to 5k sounded a good method of getting into it.

I am off to bluewater tomorrow to buy running shoes - any recommendations???

I completed week 1 today, I never thought I would do it after run 1, but after all the really good advise I've had on here I've done it :o Thanks for all the encouragement.

I nearly talked myself out of going today as the weather is terrible, the kids were playing up and I finished nights yesterday so am still recovering, but I got up and did it and now I feel really pleased with myself :o

My hips and knees hurt today, and the muscles in my feet so I think I'm going to have to bite the bullet and get some decent shoes. After each run I actually felt as if I could run for a bit longer, so feeling ready to move on to week 2.

MarniesMummy · 15/01/2011 22:23

Good on you girtlush!

PersonalClown · 15/01/2011 22:28

I'm having to bow out for a while. The run caused a flair up in my scoliosis and I've been ordered not to do anything strenuous till the muscles have settled.

I hate having back problems. I can't even start a second Pilates class yet as I'm in too much residual pain.

midtowner · 16/01/2011 02:43

Sorry to hear that PersonalClown, I hope you feel better soon.

I finished week one tonight. Quite ache-y, but I'd already been out for a long walk with DH this afternoon.

YorkshireCrockpot · 16/01/2011 09:04

Personal clown sorry to hear about tote scoliosis, hope you feel better soon.

Week 2 done!

girtlush · 16/01/2011 10:42

Sorry to hear that personalclown hope you get better soon.

Midtowner, I have found that stretching after my run and having a bath instead of a shower have really helped the aching, as suggested by the very clever ladies on this thread :o

MarniesMummy · 16/01/2011 11:13

Sorry to hear that Personal Clown, I hope you recover soon.

I've developed a tiny sore bit on the sole of my foot. It's sort of between my big toe and second toe but is almost on the sole of my foot. It's not sore enough to hurt when I run or walk but I can feel it. I don't think it's a lump (can't tell because it hurts to touch). It's a very small area (bout the diameter of a pencil (so tiny) and ideas what it could be or should I go to the doctor? (It seems a bit to trivial to trouble the doctor with).

Any ideas?

girtlush · 16/01/2011 11:35

Could be a corn marniesmum. I had one between my toes and it was so painfull I could hardly touch it.

I went to see a chiropodist, they shaved off the top of it with a scalpel and I haven't had any pain at all since. (That was about 6 years ago!)

LIZS · 16/01/2011 11:52

Just started - did Week 1, Workout 1 today . How do you fit 3 in ? I can do a weekend and Wednesday but not sure about a 3rd. Intend to add in Wiifit sessions too, could jogging on this count ?

MarniesMummy · 16/01/2011 12:02

Hi LIZS, I think that you just have to fit them in when you can and the issue is to make sure you leave at least a days rest inbetween.

I've nothing to offer on the wii fit thing I'm afraid, maybe geraldinetheluckygoat and beligerentghoul could offer advice.

I bet doing something is better than doing nothing though so go for it.

Eeek! A corn Girtlush? Actually I guess that could be it, although it's not yet formed so I guess I can't do anything about it yet. I hope I'm not going to have to endure lots of pain before I can get it sorted outSad, I'm not great with pain.

girtlush · 16/01/2011 12:09

That was merely a huge guess :)

I hope you don't have to endure lots of pain too. Maybe you should go and see your GP if it's really sore, so it doesn't get worse. It seems trivial too you, but that is what they're there for Wink

geraldinetheluckygoat · 16/01/2011 17:41

Go Go Girtlush!! Great t osee you got on much better this time! Yes I think you will find it much easier if you get some propper trainers

Personal clown, how frustrating, I really hope that you are better soon. My dh has spondylitis, which i know isn't the same, but it can be so frustrating when it interferes with what he wants to do.

About the Wii, yes I think it would count you can do the free jogging on there. Although it is a bit different i guess as im sure that running on the spot must use slightly different muscles? . I can really recommend the muscle excercises in wii fit too, they really do help to build strength, which would be a good thing to go towards completing couch to 5K.

MarniesMummy, is it a blister or just a sore patch from doing new things in different shoes, iyswim? I have had a few blisters, which could be due to my trainers being not quite right, or maybe my feet need to toughen up. Someone i know that runs has recommended sports socks with trainer socks underneath. Not convinced but might give it a go. I have some memory foam insoles....might try them too?

I just did my thrid w1 run. It was doable but not enjoyable. Had to crowbar it into the day, and ended up going in the dusk, whichwasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I am really worried that I wont be able to manage W2...everything seemed to hurt when I ran today....Sad

RatherBeOnThePiste · 16/01/2011 18:35

Week 3 Run 1 completed and not as bad as I feared. The walks were longer and half way came quickly. Having said that my shins are tired Hmm

Was listening to Scissor Sisters plus T Rex. What does everyone else listen to? Any recommendations?

Good luck everyone and Personal Clown, hope you willbe back soon ....

RatherBeOnThePiste · 16/01/2011 20:36

Actually now a couple of hours on, my legs are sooooo tired!

sybilfaulty · 16/01/2011 20:43

Onthepiste, I listen to the scissor sisters as well - at the moment as I am rubbish I am doing Rawbert but in 2 weeks time I will be back with Jake and Ana pounding the pavements. I have also got Abba, Queen and lots of other camp tracks out there.

Well done everyone who has been out. Having done this once before already, I promise you it's 1000X easier in the summer when it's warm and light. If we can do it now, anything is possible. I'm off for my Week 5, run 1 after work tomorrow. And looking forward to it. Yippee!!

geraldinetheluckygoat · 17/01/2011 10:28

I listen to various podcasts I get off the net....wish I was clever enough to make my own though....there's only so much RnB a girl can take Grin

MarniesMummy · 17/01/2011 11:08

I've just got back from r2w2, it wasn't fun Hmm or maybe that was just because I know that next week I have to run for 3 minutes up the north face of the Eiger. How that is going to happen I have no idea.

And also this weeks music is pants, fake Avril Lavigne-esque rubbish. I can't run when I'm cross! I may have to try Rawbert for the last run of week 2.

So, my crazy sore foot. It doesn't hurt at all when I run. It only hurts when I touch itConfused so I guess I'm going to try not to touch it for a few days nd then see what happens. I think I may take your advice Geraldine and get some proper socks, it can't hurt right? And there's every chance that they'll be better than the random socks that I pull out of the draw.

girtlush · 17/01/2011 11:28

Who is rawbert? I feel like I've missed something :o

MarniesMummy · 17/01/2011 13:05

You haven't.

Treat yourself to some Rawbert here

RatherBeOnThePiste · 17/01/2011 13:45

Someone thought Lady Gaga was good for running music?!

geraldinetheluckygoat · 17/01/2011 17:27

there are podcasts here:
carli who likes beyonce and suchlike

hip hop!!

girtlush · 17/01/2011 19:45

Thanks for the link Marniesmummy, I am now educated in the ways of Rawbert :o

YorkshireCrockpot · 17/01/2011 22:10

Have got a bit if lady gaga, Beverley knight, scissor sisters, sugababes, Christina, usher, alphabeat and other cheesy pop sings. All are upbeat songs that have a good beat and make me want to dance rather than run. Not sure if that's "correct" but if it doesn't make me smile it hasn't got onto my iPod. I've even got 'I touch myself' from Austin powers cos it makes me grin.

Went out in Sunday and wasn't the most stupid looking person there- hooray! Saw a couple doing Nordic walking! Shock

RatherBeOnThePiste · 18/01/2011 18:54

Week 3 Run 2 done. It was ok although I started off and realised I had forgotton to put my sports bra on so I had to abandon it and restart once appropriately dressed!!!! What a plonker!!

teenyweenytadpole · 18/01/2011 21:56

Just started. God, please tell me it gets easier, I am 43 and overweight with big boobs but I really really want to do this! Oh and I have asthma although that hasn't bothered me so far, just the physical effort of heaving my body down the road!!
